A year of painting outdoors has culminated in a month-long indoor exhibit where it is cool and comfortable. The Pikes Peak Plein Air Painters (PPPAP), comprising 30-some dedicated painters, have been working for nearly 12 months to present more than 100 paintings all created on location at the top of a mountain, near a babbling brook, along a snowy embankment, below a misty waterfall, and in places we can only dream about. For the past five years, the PPPAP has been growing in numbers and exhibiting the fruits of their labor across Colorado for one special month annually. This year, we proudly sponsor their annual show and will host an Opening Reception on July 3. The gallery will transform its walls by temporarily taking down the majority of its existing artwork to accommodate 33 PPPAP artists. Until the end of July, the exhibition of the “The Best of PPPAP” includes artists known nationally and some just making their debut in a gallery setting. Having followed the PPPAP’s progress for the past few years, they are well recognized for the quality and affordability of the work offered on a regional and national level. Some of the painters begin and end their work outdoors to fully capture the atmosphere of their setting, while others make sketches or complete a small study outdoors and add finishing touches in the studio. All attempt to capture the mystery of light, mood, and predominate colors experienced during their paint-out. Pursuing en plein painting from life challenges the finest artists in the world, and the Pikes Peak Plein Air Painters gather regularly to face the challenge and deliver excellence in beautiful artwork for our benefit. Be sure to visit us during July. Founded in January 2004 by Kenneth Shanika and an artist friend, Pikes Peak Plein Air Painters (PPPAP) is a fellowship of professional artists dedicated to the historic tradition of painting directly from life “in the moment”. Q: Is it possible to have a glass sculpture made for a special corporate award? A: Absolutely. Based on size, color, and budget, you can work with Donna Gordon, who is happy to commission pieces to meet your corporate needs. Examples of corporate “award” pieces are in the gallery and on our website.

Q: I want to hang artwork on my stone fireplace. Is it possible? A: Yes. It can be a challenge but with the right masonry nails and tools, we have done exactly that for a very happy customer. Hanging artwork is a free service that the gallery provides and we will assess the task and make sure your artwork is hung securely and safely.

What is En Plein Air? En plein air is a French term which means "in the open air", and is specifically used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and Impressionism. Painting in the open air “from life” is a pursuit unlike any other painting technique. It challenges artists to concentrate every sensory nerve on the information available in the open air. They absorb it all from sight to sound, from temperature to atmosphere, and then channel those feelings from head to hand, re-creating their impressions with paints on paper or canvas to help the viewer feel the moment as he experienced it. Experts going back to the 19

th century argued that painting en plein air was

the only way the artist could capture his vision by finding truth in nature. The plein air purist will create their works from beginning to end outdoors, while other plein artists will make their sketches outdoors and elaborate and expand in the studio for a finished work of art. There is no doubt that painting en plein air as a purist or not has impacted how we see the world on canvas. The goal of teachers and student artists alike is to capture the light and colors peculiar to a location. Painting from life is a pursuit that continues to challenge the finest artists in the world, and the Pikes Peak Plein Air Painters continue to grow and share ideas while upholding their philosophy for excellence in beautiful artwork. Experience this beauty by perusing the artwork by Hunter-Wolff Gallery’s plein air painters and members of the PPPAP. You can bring timeless beauty into your life and your home by collecting works created en plein air or by attending PPPAP exhibitions and workshops at venues such as Hunter-Wolff Gallery. The month of July is dedicated to the members of PPPAP.
