Sunday by Sunday edited by Michael E. Novak STATUTES AND COMMANDMENTS In the Book of Deuteronomy we are given civil laws and religious laws. Specifically, today we hear about laws that help us to love God and show us how to live as Gods people. The word fearin this context does not mean being afraid, but is used in the sense of obedient children deferring to a loving parent. Jesus came to help lead us to God. Like a priest, he mediates between God and the human race. In Marks Gospel today, it is in this character that Jesus clarifies Gods laws of living. In an effort to know what was really important to Jesus, a scribe asked him what was the greatest law. Jesus responded with the words of Deuteronomy, teaching that it was most important to love God. But he quickly added the second most important law: to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. Jesus told the scribe that if he understood and lived the words he had just heard, he was close to the Kingdom of God. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR Jesus wasnt very specific about who our neighbors were, but he probably did not confine his definition to just the person next door. In order to show our love for God, we must first show that love in the way we take care of our neighbors, especially those in vulnerable situations. It is good that we call ourselves Christians because we diligently obey Gods commandments, attend church regularly, and live moral lives. But deep down in our hearts, we know we need to do more. If we look at how Jesus loved his neighbors, how he took time to listen to them, care for them, and heal them in their brokenness, then we see how we are to love one another. Our actions today need to be modeled on those of Jesus. Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. STATUTES AND COMMANDMENTS In the Book of Deuteronomy we are given civil laws and religious laws. Specifically, today we hear about laws that help us to love God and show us how to live as God’s people. The word “fear” in this context does not mean being afraid, but is used in the sense of obedient children deferring to a loving parent. Jesus came to help lead us to God. Like a priest, he mediates between God and the human race. In Mark’s Gospel today, it is in this character that Jesus clarifies God’s laws of living.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR Jesus wasn’t very specific about who our neighbors were, but he probably did not confine his definition to just the person next door. In order to show our love for God, we must first show that love in the way we take care of our neighbors, especially those in vulnerable situations. It is good that we call ourselves Christians because we diligently obey God’s commandments, attend church regularly, and live moral lives. All rights

Deadline is November 7. Little Flower Court of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” And he answers, “Master, I want to see.” Let us ask Jesus for the grace to “see” our brothers and sisters who are poor and lonely. This month, through your gifts, we have been able to bring God’s love and mercy to five families, providing food, utilities, rent, and other bills. God Bless You! The St. Therese Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will meet Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 PM. The Christian Mothers’ December Circle will be meeting Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 PM in the small dining room. Please try to attend.

Treasures from Our Tradition Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. Little Flower School PTO is seeking items for their annual Dine and Bid event scheduled for November 16 at the Rugby Eagles Club. We welcome any NEW items; crafts, gift baskets, sports team items, decorations, children's items, etc. Please consider joining our efforts to help make this our most successful auction yet! Be sure to check out our Facebook page; Little Flower Catholic School to see a listing of our auction items. Theresa's chicken will be served from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. The auction will be from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Thank you for contributing and supporting Little Flower School! There is a new Lighthouse Catholic Media CD in the racks at the entrances of the church entitled The Battle Within, Sin and How to Fight It. Jeff Cavins helps us examine the root causes of our sin in order to understand the “why” behind our actions and equips his listeners with three “secret weapons” we can use to overcome sin and serve the Lord from a place of freedom and love.

FORMED — The Catholic Faith on Demand — Symbolon: Knowing the Faith

Episode 9: Mary and the Saints Discover the “Cloud of Witnesses”. How does our relationship with the Virgin Mary impact our relationship with her Son? What is the connection between our understanding of Mary and the rest of the saints? Why do we ask Mary and other “dead people” to pray for us? The answers to these questions give us a framework for the Catholic Church’s teachings on life after death and what we call “The Communion of the Saints.” Local Church Fall Suppers Valle Lutheran, Rolette, October 28 serving roast pork from 4:00 - 7:00 PM St. Cecilia’s, Harvey, October 28 serving turkey from 5:00 - 7:00 PM All are invited to the Annual Willow City Carnival Sunday, October 28 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM in the Community Hall. Join the Notre Dame Youth Group for carnival games, lunch, and drawings for door prizes and quilts. Admission is a free will offering with the proceeds to benefit Trinity Youth Camp. Catholic Charities Sunday – One Month Later. Thank you to everyone who has joined with us for Catholic Charities Sunday! We have received several calls for more information about adoption and our other programs. To date we have received about $80,000 from over 750 people and a number more who gave anonymously as part of parish collections. Many people and parishes are still mailing in their gifts but we are only about halfway to our goal of $150,000. If you would like to watch our video please visit www.CatholicCharitiesND.org. It is not too late to participate and we would be Forever Grateful for Your Support!
