The Parishes of Ascension of The Lord May 24, 2020 Fr. Joe’s article continued on Page 3 MALLIA'S MOMENTS Happy feast of the Ascension and welcome back to public masses! This feast is a great celebration because it recalls the completion of the work of Jesus physically on earth and the initiation of the work of salvation as we cooperate with the Holy Spirit and live out our baptismal calling. Not abandoned by Jesus, the feast of the ascension recalls the promise that he would send the Holy Spirit and that he himself would remain with us always. How can we but rejoice in this great gift God has given us? This is clearly not a time of staring up at heaven waiting for something to happen. It is a time of grasping the opportunity before us and empowered by the Holy Spirit we must embrace the outpouring of grace in our lives to bring the Good News to the world in which we are a part of. The reading tells us that the Apostles and disciples were still unsure of what awaited them and they went back into hiding until the descent of the Holy Spirit. With all that is going on in the world, do you really think we have time to put the Gospel and our faith into hiding? Now is the time of a Christian resurgence. An opportunity is being presented to us about bringing Christ back to our personal lives, our families and our culture. Christ desires to be brought to the world and he expects us to do it and I really think this is a great time to reintroduce him to others. This is not to be done in an antagonistic kind of way. We should not approach people with words of condemnation but in love and charity. The Good News invites us to engage the world in a conversation about values and the promotion of a world ruled by ways of justice and peace. The truth is that the Gospel, if properly presented without personal opinions, is actually acceptable to the vast majority of people on any side of political spectrum. It is the manipulation of the words of Scripture, the selective proof texting, that has led to division within church and the rejection of others of Christ. Notice very clearly how Jesus commanded us to teach people to “observe all that I have commanded you”. Nowhere does Jesus tell us to insert your opinion here for example nor does he tell us to disregard the parts you don’t like. The words of Christ are spirit and truth. Where do we think we have the right to cast them aside? That is why this feast is so significant to the faith of all believers. It is the clarion call of Christ to take the Good News to the end of the earth, and we are not there yet, even after nearly 2000 years. In a time when we are so used to celebrating “commencement exercises” for our graduates, Jesus gives us this commencement of our faith. The purpose of a commencement is not to end something but to herald its beginning. So, in a way we could call this feast commencement day of faith; today is our graduation day. It is not the time to sit back and watch, but the day when we mark our taking of what we have learned and begin to apply it. As believers that means that we live out our faith and we seek to bring Christ to the world by all that we say and do. God bless you all. Speaking of graduation… I want to congratulate all of our parish graduates from the various colleges, universities and high schools they attended. Though we are not able to celebrate you as we normally do, we assure you of our prayers and support as you go forward. May your ways be led by the Holy Spirit and may your path always be guided by the light of Christ. Walk with Jesus … At this point we are planning to move forward with our annual procession on the Feast of Corpus Christi. This year we are placing our walk under the intercession of Carlo Acuntis, a young Italian boy who is in the process of being canonized a saint and who had a profound devotion to the Eucharist. If all goes as planned, we will begin our walk after the 6:30 morning mass at St. Augustine and process along M-19 to Holy Family where we will celebrate an outdoor mass at 10:30. Please look for more information in the parish paper, website and Facebook. Because of the present state of restrictions, we will not be having many of the activities we had planned for that day as a parish celebration. We will have hot dogs and hamburgers that will be individually wrapped, pre-sealed bags of potato chips and bottles of water after mass. We will also have the raffle drawing that day. MALLIA'S MOMENTS

Happy feast of the Ascension and welcome back to public masses!

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1

Family. Hope to see many of you there, especially our young people. I encourage you to learn more about Carlo Acuntis and follow his example. Public Masses Resume Just a reminder that public masses with the reception of communion have resumed. This is in compliance with all public orders issued by the Governor. There are restrictions, though, to the resumption of masses.

First, because our concern is for the health and well being of all who attend mass, we will be insisting on some minor safety procedures. You are asked to wear a mask at church and you will be given a squirt of disinfectant when you enter mass. Please do not come to mass if you are ill, have a compromised immune system or are presently under going treatments for an illness that leaves you weak.

Secondly, you do not need to be afraid to come to mass because we are cleaning and disinfecting the church and bathrooms after every mass. Doors will be open so that you will not be touching them either and we are prepared to do what we need to do so that the distribution of communion is done safely.

Finally, though we do not naively approach our faith, nor do we test God, we do place our trust in Him. That means we rely on our own common sense, knowledge and abilities to work in conjunction with Gods will. We do not simply do nothing and say that God will take care of us. You would not jump out of a plane and trust that the Lord is going to make sure you land safely in a pile of

Homemade Face Masks Needed - Can You Help?

If you sew and would like to help fill a need, please con-sider making homemade face masks for our parishes. During the past month our St Augustine & Holy Family nurses & friends have sewn homemade face masks for the community and our parishes, but our supply of masks have run very low and we can’t keep up with the demand. If you sew and would like to help, we will sup-ply you with fabric and supplies to make the face masks. Please call Jane Cheyne, RN, for information or supplies at 586-855-3227. Thank You!

cotton balls; you take a parachute. So, it is in this case. We trust in the Lord, but we also prepare to avoid what we can reasonably avoid. Together, let us join to praise the Lord in one of the 8 masses per weekend. My heartfelt gratitude to all of you As I stated last week at the end of mass and has now been made public, I have been asked by the archbishop to accept the appointment as pastor of St. Kieran parish in Shelby Township as of August 1. It is always hard leaving a parish and its people that you have grown to love. You have all enriched my life and my time here has been a great blessing and so I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and charity towards me. I appreciate the things you have taught me and the ways you challenged me to grow. I will never forget you in my prayers and I ask all of you to pray for me as well.

Most importantly, I ask that you pray for Fr. Phil and for each other in this time of transition. I hold a firm hope that he is the right pastor for you at this moment in history. Our work together will only bear great fruit if you continue to be willing to work for the goals that have been created.

I stated at the start of my time with you, that this is your parish and that priests come and go, but you stay forever. What happens is because you are willing to make it happen and so it is. The future of your parishes and schools is firmly in your hands. You have the tools to make good things happen if you are willing to claim them as your destiny. Keep your eyes firmly on the Lord and keep Christ consecrated in your hearts. Thank you again for everything.

Be Safe! Use the Emergency Room if Needed.

All Ascension Hospital ER's are open for Covid AND non-Covid issues. Please do not stay away from the ER if you have any health issues that require emergent care. The medical experts don't want you to suffer at home or ignore symptoms out of fear of going to the Emergency Room during this pandemic. The hospital has designated areas to keep you safe from exposure to coronavirus.

Helpful Information for all Parishioners

Hand sanitizer will be provided, and homemade face masks will also be provided, as long as supplies last. We are limited to a capacity of 25% at each mass, therefore an additional mass is added at each parish:

Holy Family Sunday Masses Saturday: Confession at 3:30pm Mass at 4:30pm Sunday: Masses at 8:30am, 10:30am, 5:30pm

St. Augustine Sunday Masses Saturday: Confession at 5:00pm Mass at 6:00pm Sunday: Masses at 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:00am

• For those who are ill or feel uneasy about coming back to church, the morning Mass on Sunday will continue to be broadcast on Facebook live and downloaded onto the parishes websites by 1:00 p.m. for viewing anytime.

The church buildings will continue to be opened from 9:00am until 6:00pm for private prayer on the day which each parish hosts a mass, as listed below.

SAVE THE DATE: June 14, 2020

Q: Our son has been home from college

since this pandemic lock down began.

We have had a lot of time to have some

very nice conversations. However, he is

getting a lot of socialist and anti-Catholic

indoctrination from some of his professors. The one point

that neither my husband nor I can answer is: All religion

today is nothing more than the extension of the ancient

superstitions that have existed in every civilization sense the

dawn of humankind. How should we answer this? A: That is an interesting and encouraging point regarding

human history. Probably a thousand cultures and tribes have

held thousands of purely superstitious, even barbaric, beliefs

and practices throughout history. The worship of trees,

rocks, the sun, the moon and you name it is somewhere in

our human history. Human sacrifice, body mutilation, and

many other horrible pagan practices were at one time and in

some places normal worship. I think this history should serve to strengthen our belief in

God, not shake it. Humans were created to worship God.

God Himself wired us to know that a higher being exists.

The fact that every civilization on earth throughout history

has worshiped something only serves to prove we have an

inner compass that knows there is a god. We are also born

with in inner sense of right and wrong. Normal human

beings are born with a conscience. We are the only animal

in all of God’s creation that can feel guilt, shame, and

embarrassment. We also experience a sense of satisfaction

when we accomplish something useful or perform a good

deed. Although many people throughout history have seared their

conscience and become doers of evil instead of

righteousness, it does not change the fact that human nature

is programmed to know God. He also created us with a free

will to choose or reject Him. Deep down inside, humans throughout history have had the

knowledge that there is a higher power and we were created

to worship this higher power. What we cannot know is

exactly who this higher power is until He reveals himself to

us. That is exactly what the God of Abraham, Isaac, and

Jacob did. He further revealed himself through His Son

Jesus Christ. For us today, God has commissioned each of

us to share this Good News in our world of influence. We

are to share the Gospel with others who may know there is a

God, but may not know the extent of the relationship we can

have with Him through His Son, who died for our

sins. Encourage your son to share this good news when he

returns to school. Teach him how to UNLEASH THE

GOSPEL! Please send your questions to: [email protected]

Heavenly Father,

On this Memorial Day weekend, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and

their lives with your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and, thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I

desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite

myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - ASCENSION OF THE LORD The Commissioning of the Disciples MT 28:16-20 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

MEET OUR EXTENDED FAMILY St. Michael the Archangel (Feast Day September 29) This saint is not actually a saint; he is an angel, who is the leader of the army of God! Angels—messengers from God— appear frequently in Scripture, but only Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are named. Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince,” who defends Israel against its enemies; in the Book of Revelation, he leads God’s armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the fourth century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels in the fifth century. From tradition and Scripture, we know some of the main things St. Michael focuses on are combatting Satan, helping the faithful to heaven, and being a defender of all Christians and the Church. People call on St. Michael to ask for protection. He is the patron saint of doctors, police, and soldiers.

Baby Bottle Bounce Back

(Being Social Distance Responsible )

Your spare change saves lives and changes

hearts!

Beginning Mother’s Day, May 10th, St. Augustine Christian Service has envelopes available for your donation to assist with the financial needs of Spero Center (formerly Blue Water Pregnancy Care Center).

Being responsible to social distancing guidelines, instead of passing out baby bottles for your donation, Christian Service has provided envelopes for this important fundraiser in church and at the rectory back door. Simply place your change, cash or check into the envelope and place it in the offertory box in church or in the box on the rectory back door.

Please return all envelopes by Father’s Day, June 21, 2020.

Thank you for your support of this important fundraiser, especially during this difficult time.

Outdoor Memorial Day Mass

Monday, May 25, 2020 8:00 a.m.

at St. Michael Cemetery

Memorial Day Mass will be cele-brated Monday, May 25th, at 8:00am OUTDOORS at Saint

Michael Cemetery. Due to the current health restrictions in place, we are prevented from having the Memorial Day mass in the chapel, as in past years. The mass will be held outside, near the chapel. Please bring your own chair(s) from home, as none will be provided at the cemetery. Even though the mass is outside, you are still required to wear a facemask and practice social distancing by placing yourself 6 feet from others not in your household. In case of rain, mass will be held at St. Augustine Church.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing us apart, limiting our interaction and hammering the economy, common anxiety and stress could tip into depression. How do you know if it's short term or something more? There are some common symptoms and actions you can take to start your rebound. With routines disrupted and anxiety so high, changes in our mood, hygiene and motivation are signs we may be struggling to cope with the pandemic. Grief has symptoms very similar to depression, and many of us are grieving the loss of jobs, family members, our health and normalcy.

Dr. Jennifer Matthews, the founder of Hope and Restora-tion Counseling, said these are some warning signs of depression:

- Feeling down for days on end

- Irritability and restlessness

- Difficulty concentrating

- Trouble performing typical tasks

"Also, sleep is impacted. So some individuals are sleep-ing a lot more than normal or not sleeping at all," she said. Another typical symptom of depression would be feelings of worthlessness."

There are things you can do to fight it. Have a routine to stick to, and find support.

“Schedule calls with family and friends, bundle news con-sumption in the morning and evening, treat yourself to healthy meals and walks outside, and remember, things will get better.”

"And if you really just can't kind of break this stuck feeling, this would be a time to seek out a mental health profes-sional," Matthews said. Source: WXYZ, NIH

OFFICE DROP BOX and BULLETIN STAND

Many of you have located the “office drop box” and we are very appreciative. Please share the information with your family and fellow parishioners who may not know that this option is now available. We are truly grateful for your continued support!

A News Stand Box has been donated to Holy Family with the objective to share a hard copy of the bulletin. The Bulletin Stand is located right between the double doors of the Life Center.

Prayer against Coronavirus Lord Jesus Christ, our Divine physician, we ask you to guard and protect us from Coronavirus COVID-19 and all serious illness. For all that have died from it, have mercy; for those that are ill now, bring healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them; for medical caregivers helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to contain the spread, grant them success; for the frightened, grant peace. May your precious blood be our defense and salvation. By your grace, may you turn the evil of disease into moments of consolation and hope. We especially pray for (intentions). Dear Jesus, we abandon ourselves to your infinite mercy. Amen.
