A Note from Our Pastor,

I am happy to announce that this weekend on the Solemnity of Pentecost here at St. Agatha’s we shall once again resume our Sunday public Masses. Masses will be on Saturday May 30th

at 4:30pm; and on Sunday May 31st at 8am, 11am, and 5pm. This schedule allows sufficient time for the cleaning of the Church between Masses. We will assess how things go this weekend before we shall do any scheduling of dai-ly Masses or Funeral Masses. I am extremely grateful to our parish staff who have worked tirelessly to make it pos-sible for us once again to gather for the celebration of Mass together, and to the many parishioners serving as volunteers at the Masses this weekend and in future week-ends. You will note that we are asking people to arrive no earlier than 20 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass, and no later than 5 minutes before Mass. Doors will be locked 5 minutes prior to the start of Mass. Not all doors will be used for entry into the Church, but there will be signs indi-cating the entry doors. Apart from young children and those with a medical condition preventing them, all people coming to Mass must wear a facemask or face covering. We ask parishioners to bring their own hand sanitizers, although there will be some in several locations in the Church. We’ll have a number of volunteers whom we are calling “ambassadors” to assist you outside the Church and to welcome you and assist you inside the Church building. Collection baskets will be placed near the entry doors for you to drop in your offering. Inside the Church you’ll note that many pews are taped off and unavailable for seating. This is on account of the 6-foot social distanc-ing rule. Family members living in the same household may sit close to one another in a pew, but everyone else must keep at least 6’ apart. There are signs indicating the available pews, and clear markings on the walls and on the carpet indicating the one-way flow of foot traffic within the Church. There will be no congregational or choir sing-ing, but we shall have an organist and cantor at all Masses except the 8am Sunday. There will be no offering of the Sign of Peace. At the time of Holy Communion, one of the ambassadors will guide you to one of the Holy Commun-ion stations. You will receive Holy Communion in your hand, move forward to the place beyond where you re-ceived the sacred host, and at that other location remove your mask and consume the host, and then return to your seat. More detailed instruction about this will be given at each Mass, right before Holy Communion is offered. After Communion, people are asked to remain in their pews un-til an ambassador invites you to depart at the end of Mass, so that leaving the Church will respect the 6-foot social distance requirement and be as orderly as possible. There will be no processions of priest and ministers. Parishioners will return to their cars and exit the property. After each Mass the Church will be cleaned and sanitized. If you

want to see a 3-minute video about how Mass will proceed with the current restrictions, please see our parish website and click on “Archdiocese of Boston: Returning to Mass.”

Even with all these changes and restrictions, it will still be a great blessing to be together in our beautiful Church building for the celebration of Mass especially on Pente-cost as we commemorate the great Gift that is the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, and as we ask the Holy Spirit to fill us and our parish community with renewed hope and renewed energy to be instruments of the Lord’s peace and love to others, as we continue to make our way through this pandemic. If anyone feels re-luctant to come to Mass this weekend, not to worry. Cardi-nal Sean has continued the dispensation from having to participate in Sunday Mass, and at 4:30pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday we’ll continue to livestream the Mass on our website, as well as the 9am Monday through Saturday.

Another bit of news involves St. Agatha School. St. Aga-tha School has 2 important events and fundraisers coming up this week which happens to be St. Agatha School Spirit Week. There will be an online auction and a virtual 5k road race June 4th through June 6th. Links to register for both events can be found on the St. Agatha School web-site. We are also thrilled to announce that with our ability to gather for Mass in Church, even with the current re-strictions, the St. Agatha School 8th-Grade Graduation cer-emony and Mass will take place as originally scheduled on Wednesday evening June 10th. I am so happy for our grad-uates, their families, and the entire St. Agatha School com-munity that our 8th-graders will not have to miss this very important milestone in their lives!

A final bit of good news is that the full initiation and recep-tion into the Catholic Church for our 6 candidates will take place here at St. Agatha’s at a noontime Mass on Saturday June 13th. Please keep in your prayers Olivia, Tina, Jordan, Winston, Chuck, and David, and their families, as this very important (and long awaited!) day finally draws near!

Have a blessed week!

Welcome Home! When you enter the Upper Church you’ll notice

instructional signs like the ones shown here. For more details (and photos), please visit our website.

In addition to Ambassadors outside the church, there will be Ambassa-dors directing you once you enter the Upper Church. Certain pews will be taped off to allow for the

required 6’ between each attendee/household. There are arrows on the

floors/walls as a guide also.

Reminders of required guidelines from the Archdiocese of Boston.

Ambassadors will direct each pew to approach the altar for Holy Communion to maintain social distance. There is an area taped

off on the floor showing where you may pull down your mask, con-

sume the sacred host, re-mask and then return to your pew.

We expect that entering the Upper Church will take more time than usual. Please allow extra time to arrive. The

doors will open 20 minutes before Mass begins. Due to capacity constraints, the doors will close 5 minutes before Mass.

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

THEME: We have been given the breath of God—the gift of the Holy Spirit.

As you listen to this dramatic reading again today, what image strikes you in the story? What single word or phrase catches your ear or touches your heart?

Reading I : Acts 2:1-11

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Pastoral Planning

May 31 ~ Pentecost Sunday We hear in our readings today that being filled with the Ho-ly Spirit, the disciples were unable to remain silent about how they had experienced the mighty acts of God. On this feast of Pentecost, the apostles went out among the people and began spreading Jesus’ message, establishing the begin-ning of the Church. This feast reminds us that the Holy Spir-it has been poured upon us giving us the gifts we need to speak of the ways God is working in our lives. Don’t let this day end without speaking to someone about God’s mighty deeds. Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love!

This week we are planning for the gradual re-opening of the Church and Parish Office. Elsewhere in this Bulletin and on our website is detailed information about the new Mass schedule and the procedures being put in place to provide a safe environment. Please be aware that this past week we hired a company to do a complete sanitization of the entire interior of the Church. We also have allowed am-ple time in between Masses so that we can thoroughly dis-infect all touch surfaces using a product called Bioesque. This product is recommended by the Archdiocese because it is highly effective at killing viruses and also because it is non-toxic, easy to apply and quick drying.

We are also planning to gradually re-open the Parish Office this week. In these early weeks of re-opening we do ask that you continue to conduct whatever business you can by telephone or email. And we certainly appreciate the many parishioners who have either dropped their Offertory con-tribution through the front door mail slot, have emailed them in, or have contributed electronically. There will be a staff member answering the phones each weekday from 9am to 4pm. If there is a matter which cannot be handled remotely, a staff member will be available to answer the Rectory door from 9am to 12 noon each weekday. Should you find it necessary to come to the Rectory please be sure to wear protective face covering. We appreciate your pa-tience during this trying time. We will hopefully be able to relax these restrictions in the near future after receiving guidance from both the state and the Archdiocese to do so.

Musical Notes for Pentecost

Glory be to God! How fitting it is to be able to celebrate Mass together once again, as we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. As I wrote last week, music for Mass will be scaled down for now. While we cannot lift our voices together in song, we pray the words in our hearts, and lift our spirits to join the angels and saints in singing praise to God.

At Communion on Sunday, our cantor will sing the beautiful 9th-century chant, “Veni Creátor Spíritus.” It may be better known as the source text for the beloved hymn, “Come, Holy Ghost.” Veni Creátor Spíritus is an invocaton to the Holy Spirit, and therefore is often sung at Confirmations, priestly ordinations, consecrations of bishops, dedications of churches, as cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel to elect a new Pope, and, of course, at Pentecost.

To help us pray with the cantor at Communion, the English translation is below, along with the corresponding verses of “Come, Holy Ghost” for comparison.

Come Creator Spirit, Come, Holy Ghost, creator blest, visit the souls of your people: And in our hearts take up thy rest Fill with grace from on high Come, with thy grace and heav’nly aid the hearts which you have created. To fill the hearts which thou hast made.

You who are called the Comforter, O Comforter, to thee we cry, gift of the most high God, Thou heav’nly gift of God most high, Living fount, fire, love Thou fount of life and fire of love and unction of souls. And sweet anointing from above.

Sevenfold in your gifts, finger of the Father’s right hand, You promised truly by the Father, giving speech to tongues.

Inflame our senses with your light, pour your love into our hearts, Strengthen our weak bodies with lasting power.

Drive far away the enemy, grant peace at all times; So under your guidance may we avoid all evil.

Grant us by you O Holy Ghost, through Thee alone to know the Father and to know the Son; Know we the Father and the Son; And you, spirit of both, Be this our firm unchanging creed, may we always believe. That thou dost from them both proceed.

To God the Father be glory, Praise be to thee, Father and Son, to the Son who rose from the dead And Holy Spirit with them one; And to the Comforter, And may the Son on us bestow for all ages. Amen. All gifts that from the Spirit flow.
