From the Desk of the Pastor March 25, 2018Palm Sunday

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give mean-ing to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Next Week: Easter Sunday of the Resurrection1st Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-432nd Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

Gospel: John 20:1-9

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7This passage is part of what is referred to as “the Suffer-ing Servant.” But like a well-trained servant of God, we too must do what God demands of us.

Gospel: Mark 14:1 - 15:47We use the dialog reading of the Passion of Jesus Christ according to St. Mark (on Good Friday, we will use St. John’s version). By our participation in reading the part of the crowd, we realize our guilt made the suffering and death of Christ necessary. But we have an opportunity to be cleansed of our sins. Reconciliation Monday is this week: 3:00 – 9:00 PM at Immaculate Conception and throughout the Archdiocese.Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11

Why was it necessary for the Second Person of the Trini-ty to suffer for our sake? If we acknowledge our own fail-ings, we would recognize that we are incapable of mak-ing amends for our sins; we need His divine intervention.

Procession of the Palms - Mark 11:1-10This Gospel is proclaimed before Mass. It shows Jesus’ glorious entry into Jerusalem amid a hero’s welcome with no foreshadowing of His Passion and Death.

Palm Sunday reminds us that the Lord is also your personal King of love in peace, who can ride calmly and coura-geously into the inner world of your heart and mind and bring His ministry of growth and inspiration where things had once seemed to be fallen and hopeless. We are invited, too, to wave palm branches of joy and salvation in the air, and shout with glee, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

In this wonderful story we read together today, we are reminded of the enthusiasm felt and expressed by the pilgrims of Israel back then. This scene pictures, also, the kind of enthusiasm we are designed to feel in welcoming the Lord as our King.

This Holy Week, set aside time to come to Church and walk with our Lord in the Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Then your Easter will be filled with joy as your lips proclaim, “He is Risen!”

Stewardship PrayerAlmighty Father,As your disciples, teach us to do your will,to be your servants.Guide us to become Stewards of our given vocations,Discerning what gifts you have given us,To continue carrying out Your divine plan.

Let us continue to work together,As we proclaim and teach, serve and sanctify,Sowing your fields, caring for your world,Giving generously of our Time, Talents and TreasureIn our Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady.We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Easter Season Series onThe Gospel of St. Mark

April 12, 19, 26 and May 3, 17Join Fr. James Villa, OFM for five Thursday evenings (April 12, 19, 26, May 3, 17) in the Lower Church: 7:00 - 8:30 PM to explore the Gos-pel of St. Mark. Fr. Villa, a Scripture teacher, will lead us to an under-standing and explanation of the Gospel of Mark which is used this Liturgical Year B in our Lectionary.

The Gospel of St. Mark is the second book in the New Tes-tament, one of the four Gospels. Its traditional author is a man named John Mark, a companion of St. Peter, who wrote the Gospel using Peter’s eyewitness accounts.

The Gospel of Mark is 16 chapters long, shorter than the other three Gospels. It is considered by most scholars to be the first of the four Gospels written, with a date be-tween 50 and 70 AD. It was likely written from Rome to Romans, but more broadly, Gentiles.

The purpose of the Gospel is to present Jesus Christ to Gentiles and to encourage believers to endure and perse-vere in the face of persecution and perhaps even martyr-dom. The emphasis of Mark revolves around significant events in the life of Christ, such as his crucifixion and suf-fering. Jesus as teacher and his followers as disciples are also key to the Gospel’s message.

The text for the course will be the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) which can be purchased at the Parish Office or on the first night of class. The Bible app, which offers the NABRE, is free.

134. Whatever happened to meatless Fridays?

In 1966, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (US-CCB) published Complementary Norms on Penance and Abstinence which released U.S. Catholics from a strict abstinence from meat on Fridays outside of Lent. But the bishops asked that Friday be a day of penance throughout the year.

“Friday should be in each week something of what Lent is in the entire year. For this reason, we urge all to pre-pare for that weekly Easter that comes with each Sunday by freely making of every Friday a day of self-denial and mortification in prayerful remembrance of the passion of Jesus Christ.”

The bishops went on to say that, among these freely cho-sen penitential practices, “we give first place to abstinence from flesh meat. We do so in the hope that the Catholic community will ordinarily continue to abstain from meat by free choice as formerly we did in obedience to Church law.”

Each year on Good Friday, as we contemplate the passion and death of Our Lord in Jerusalem, our Holy Father asks all of the parishes throughout the world to take up a spe-cial collection to assist the Holy Land Mission

Specifically, the Pontifi-cal Good Friday collection enables the Franciscan Fathers, who have been entrusted with the care of the holiest sites of our faith, to continue their splendid maintenance of and service to these sa-cred shrines.

Please be as generous as possible in assisting the Franciscan Fathers in their important work for the Lord and His Church.
