SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The radical scene of Woodstock, in the midst of the sixties age of protest, in retrospect produced many later stories of conversion like that of the biblical “Prodigal Son” (“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son”, treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”) The original singers are no longer glorified drug users. The historical event changed lives then and now. A few years ago I met Mike Love, co-founder of the Beach Boys, at a Manhattan event. Fast forward a few concerts and years to the cruise, Love and original Beach Boy Bruce Johnston performed and spoke to a vast crowd. They said the group has survived because of great music, connecting with verbal themes to the emotional hungers of the public, and reaching back into the past (influence of the “Four Freshman” group in vocalizing) to enliven the present. “God Only Knows” remains their crowd favorite. Another sixties group performing was the Cowsills, who the “Partridge Family” show was modeled after. I have met them many times, even with my mother. Their songs, such as “We Can Fly”, meet similar standards of longevity. The recipes of musical success make me think of the Bible which also has profound stories to inspire, spiritual ways of connecting to all generations, and draw out of the past to inform the present and future. Tommy James and the Shondells performed a concert in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 3 at the old Pan American Terminal (now serving as a baggage holder for the nearby airport). Famous for songs like Crystal Blue Persuasion, Crimson and Clover, plus Mony Mony there was long-standing rumors that the names for the songs were synonymous with drug usage. Whether or not those claims are true or not only they and God knows. James did mention publicly that his start as a rock group was with a mob-influenced record company. In the mess of the sixties, 55 years later he made various references to God during the concert (perhaps proof of his own conversion). A tender scene before me was an elderly man, deeply enthusiastic about the music, simultaneously taken care of his wheelchair-bound wife. I commented to him how respectful I was of his wedding day vows “in good times and bad, til death do us part.” Maximus the Confessor was born in sixth century Constantinople, and died the following century mid-stream in the modern day former Soviet territory of Georgia. A saint and defender of the faith, he was martyred with his tongue removal and right hand cut off. This was another story of courage in turbulent times. He once wrote: “God’s will is to save us, and nothing pleases Him more than our coming back to Him with true repentance. The heralds of truth and the ministers of divine grace have told us this from the beginning, repeating it in every age. Indeed, God’s desire for our salvation is the primary and preeminent sign of His infinite goodness.” On the cruise journey was the opportunity to witness the art works, often spiritual, of the late and famous Spanish artist Salvador Dali. Salvador Dali died in January of 1989 in his hometown of Figueres, Spain. Raised by a devout Catholic mother, Dali would later stray from his faith though religious themes were often reflected in his artworks; from both the Bible and the classic manuscript poem “The Divine Comedy” from Dante. Yet, he was asked in 1970 by a journalist – “What would you be if you hadn’t been a painter?” Dali responded – “I’m going to surprise you, I think if would have been a priest.” Dante was born in 1250 to the (Florence) Alighieri family in Italy. His masterpiece work explored hell, purgatory and heaven. In 1949, Pope Pius XII commissioned Dali to paint the Immaculate Conception for the Vatican. Dali was also a child, metaphorically, of the sixties with an avant-garde lifestyle typical of the Woodstock generation. But, he moved back to his roots of faith as did many of the rock-and-roll legends on this cruise. Eduard Fontes, a former Catholic priest from Barcelona, wrote a book called “Dali Illustrator.” Written in 2016, this was one of his passages about Dali: “One of the rarely publicized facets of Dali was his Roman Catholicism. Dali was a Catholic, who only two days before he died, was visited by a priest. I met this priest, Father Marcus Costablla, priest of the church of Saint Pere de Figueres… at the time Dali died… During the visit he showed Dali an image of Christ crucified, which can be seen at the church of Figueres, and spoke of Dali taking it close to him and kissing it. It was clear as he spoke that Father Costabella found this visit to be a particularly satisfying and moving part of his relationship with Dali.” (cont’d on page 4)

TODAY
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 Abraham pleads with the Lord, who planned to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of the evil and sin in those cities. Abraham asks him if he would spare the city if fifty, forty, thirty, twenty or even only ten innocent people were found there. God says that he would spare the cities even for the sake of only ten. Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Paul explains to the Colossians that through baptism, they are raised to life with Christ because they believed in the power of the God who raised him from the dead. Even though they once lived in sin, their sins have been pardoned through Jesus. Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 Jesus' disciples asked him how they should pray. He gave them some phrases similar to those now used in the Lord's prayer. Jesus also reminds the disciples how even men with sins are able to give good things to their children, and explains how much more the heavenly Father wants to give to us. Monday Ex 32:15-24, 30-34; Jn 11:19-27 or Lk 10:38-42 Tuesday Ex 33:7-11, 34:5b-9, 28; Mt 13:36-43 Wednesday Ex 34:29-35; Mt 13:44-46 Thursday Ex 40:16-21, 34-38; Mt 13:47-53 First Friday Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Mt 13:54-58 First Saturday Lv 25:1, 8-17; Mt 14:1-12

PADRE’S CORNER CONT’D In the last few days of the cruise the “Yardbirds” performed (“With Your Love”), as did the “Cowsills” (“Indian Lake, plus “We Can Fly,” and the “Rain the Park and Other Things”) and the comedy team “Cheech and Chong” (“Sister Mary Elephant” as the dedicated nun teaching irreverent students). What are some conclusions? In the same way that Jesus 2000 years ago and the Catholic Church in subsequent centuries have interacted with and learned from its surrounding cultures, we can do the same today. The Cowsills, on April 4 at poolside, opened a folksong about Samson from the Old Testament. We can also integrate spirituality and a sense of God into every moment of our lives Yes at nostalgia cruises, job accomplishments, struggles, romantic breakings of the heart, anniversaries, college graduations, dating, ordinations, moral failures, growth in grace, receptions of the Eucharist, penitential confessions, shared meals, babies born, disappointments, institutional hypocrisy, political tensions, violence with warfare, and friendships that endure or fade away disappointingly into the emotional sunset. “Blood, Sweat and Tears” reflected this gamut of human emotions and pulls when they performed “Sometimes in Winter,” plus “God Bless The Child” and “Spinning Wheel.” As with King David’s psalms, God is in the music. On the last day of the cruise the Yardbirds and the Family Stone (Dance To The Music) performed in the pool area, while Cheech and Chong spoke about the sixties as if they had not changed much since then. “Up In Smoke” was their signature film back then, certainly not encouraging ourselves to lead a moral life. Saint Vincent DePaul of Valencia, Spain (1350-1419) was a Dominican priest. He wrote for me and you: “When you treat virtuous and sinful acts in your sermons and exhortations, use simple language… Your words, should sound as though they were coming… from a charitable and loving heart… be that of a father who … struggles to free them, raise them up, and cherish them like a mother, as one who is happy over their progress and the hope they have of heaven’s glory...not from a proud or angry soul.” God must be the center of who we are. Father Bill
