3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family

Dear Parishioners,

When I was in elementary school in Ireland, we had no school

busses. We walked to and from school every day. The road

home passed by St. Patrick's Church where I was baptized and

received first communion and confirmation. My buddy Kevin

and I would always drop in. I suppose we wanted to say a

prayer, but quite honestly, we were fascinated by the candles,

and by the occasional coffin that sat in a side chapel in the days

before funeral parlors, and the lingering smell of incense, and

the sense of awe and wonder of the place. It also seemed that

Fr. Nagle was always in the confessional, so we would go to

confession - sometimes a few times a week. We felt better

afterwards, like we had done something significant and freeing.

My, how things have changed!

At St. Catharine School and religious education program we

encourage the students to go to confession several times a year.

Priests who visit us and sometimes help us with confessions

often comment on the fact that our students seem comfortable

and confident about going to confession. We conclude that

even if they do not go to confession regularly after they move

up to high school, and observation seems to support that

conclusion, at least, they will know the procedure and not be

inhibited because they are not familiar with how to do it when

they get older, and find themselves in situations where they are

in need of spiritual healing and forgiveness.

In fact however, as I sit in the confessional on Saturday

before Mass, I cannot escape the obvious fact that most

Catholics do not go to confession anymore. A recent

census done by the Centre for Applied Research in the

Apostolate (Cara) revealed that less than 2% of Catholics

go to confession regularly.

The fact is that there is no longer a unified and universal

common understanding about sin and confession, and this

reveals also wider and deeper tensions in the Catholic Church.

Some Catholics will never receive Communion without

confessing their sins first if they have missed Sunday Mass.

Others believe that missing Mass is a serious sin only if it

represents a total rejection of the obligation to worship God at

all. The fact is that millions of Catholics have ceased going to

Confession. The late moral theologian Bernard Haring wrote

back in 1978 that adult Catholics stopped going to confession

after the Papal Encyclical Humanae Vitae that outlawed

artificial contraception, because most were already using

artificial contraception, and saw nothing wrong with it.

Nowadays, many young adults would include also, sex before

marriage, gay relationships, being divorced, remarried. Many

have gone a step further, and left the church altogether, or, if

they stay, don't take too seriously the Church's teaching on

serious/mortal sin, and the need to confess. The result is a

massive split between the teaching of the church and the

practice of the faith.

A young adult asked me recently: “Does confession reconcile us with God or with the Church? Can mortal sin ever be forgiven without confession?” The answer is not as

obvious as you might think.

The frequent confession that I grew up with, was not always

characteristic of the Church. In fact it was an unprecedented

phenomenon of the 20th century, and dates back to Pope St.

Pius X who advocated that 1st Communion and First

Confession be changed from 13-14 yrs to 7 and even younger.

He encouraged daily Mass, and Confession and Communion

weekly if possible. The history of confession is an interesting

study, and a lot more long and complex than is possible to

describe here. The undeniable fact is that the Sacrament of

Confession is a source of forgiveness and healing, and has

always been a part of the culture and practice of the church

since the very first days of the church when Christ charged his

apostles to go forth and preach the gospel, assuring them:

"whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained".

We should not allow controversy, disagreement and confusion

to deprive ourselves of a God given source of grace and healing

when we need it, and whether we are regular, irregular,

occasional or once-in-a-life time practitioners of the Sacrament,

it would serve us well to maintain an open mind and a

receptiveness to this great Sacrament.

Music Ministry News

Our Music Ministry is expanding to include many more young people! If you or your family are interested in playing or singing with us, please contact Dr. Jarred Tafaro at the rectory 732-449-5765 Ext. 103 for details.

Pictured above are some members of our Music Ministry from the 4pm mass at St. Margaret Church.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

If someone asked you the question “what does love look like” what would you say? Perhaps you would point to some special person or persons in your life --- family or friends you have known and loved for a long time --- or perhaps you would identify some charitable event that you have witnessed or experienced.

The great St. Augustine raised this question over 15 centuries ago and gave this answer: “what does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.”

Sounds a lot like what we try to accomplish each year through our Annual Catholic Appeal, doesn’t it? This year, the Diocese of Trenton has adopted St. Augustine’s question as the theme of our annual appeal. As you know so well, the Diocese turns to you every year at this time to respond to that question through the good works you help us to accomplish. What would the Diocese be if not for its parishes? What would its parishes be if not for faithful, generous parishioners? What would faithful, generous parishioners be if not for individual hearts moved to show Christ’s love?

Love and charity make all the difference in our world. What does love look like? It looks like our Diocese, our parishes, our people --- it looks like you.

Please join me, your Bishop, once again to make your mark on the Annual Catholic Appeal this year. Through your generous and sacrificial gift, be the hands and feet and eyes and ears that St. Augustine mentioned in response to the question he posed “what does love look like?” Without you, there is no other answer.

For all that you do and for all that you are to the Diocese, I thank you. May the Lord help you to continue to be the love he offers to the world. God bless you.

Gratefully yours in in Christ,

Most Reverend David O’Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton

February 17 & 18 is the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton.

MEN’S CORNERSTONE IV WEEKEND RETREAT

“AMAZING GRACE: HOW SWEET THE SOUND”, MARCH 9-10, 2018

The Men’s Cornerstone Group at St. Rose Parish

will be holding their annual weekend retreat on

March 9th and 10th at St. Rose in Belmar. Founded

by Bill Harkins in the spring of 2014, Cornerstone

meets monthly with the goal of helping adult men

develop and strengthen their relationship with God by

sharing their experiences with one another on their faith

journey. The retreat is open to adult men from St. Rose

Parish in Belmar as well as our neighboring Cohort 19

parishes – St. Mark’s of Sea Girt, St. Catharine-St.

Margaret of Spring Lake, Ascension of Bradley Beach,

and St. Elizabeth’s of Avon.

Cornerstone IV Weekend is a 26-hour annual retreat

that begins Friday evening at 7pm and ends Saturday

evening with a Family Liturgy. The theme for this

year’s Cornerstone IV Weekend is “Amazing Grace:

How Sweet the Sound”. We put away the cell phones

for the weekend and have a fun-filled “Boy Scout” kind

of weekend, complete with a sleepover at “Hotel St.

Rose!”. In addition to renewing our relationship with

God, we also spend the weekend getting to know others

through small group discussions, fun games, and music.

We also have time for prayer, reflection, and

reconciliation. The Cornerstone Retreat is an extremely

well-planned weekend, with every detail clearly defined

including speakers addressing topics like My

Relationship with God, Growth in Community,

Outreach in Ministry, My Journey with God, and Prayer

and Discipleship.

The retreat concludes on Saturday night with a

celebration of the Liturgy and we invite our families and

friends to the closing mass and reception afterwards.

Men of St. Rose and our fellow Cohort 19 parish

communities -- we would love to have YOU join us

for the Cornerstone IV Weekend Retreat on March

9th and 10th at St. Rose Parish.

Brochures are available in the back of the church and if

you would like more information about the Cornerstone

IV Weekend Retreat or our monthly meetings, please

contact Jack V. Kirnan at (609) 647-5431 or by email

at [email protected].

The Catholic Perspective on

Cremation

Many Catholics are now

choosing cremation following

the death of a loved one.

Because the Catholic Church

insists on respect for the human

body, Catholic teaching does

not believe that scattering the

ashes or keeping them in

homes is a proper and respectful disposition of the

remains.

The Rite of Committal follows cremation and consists

of burying or entombing the remains in a grave,

columbarium, mausoleum or niche. St. Catharine

Cemetery now also offers glass niches for those

desiring cremation. For more information on the

Church’s position as it relates to cremation, or

availability of these niches, please contact our

Director of Cemeteries, Ed Stevens, 732-681-6269

or on his cell 732-614-0600.

Members of our Parish who have family or friends

in the service have given us their names which can

be found in our Remembrance books in both churches in front of one of the side altars. We

encourage you to stop there, say a prayer for those

listed and for all our service people. To add a name to our prayer

list, please call Barbara 732-449-5392 or Karen 732-685-7065

or [email protected].

Mission of Mercy The new St. Thomas More Church continues to be built in the bush area next to where Sister Faida and the Alanyi Clinic are in Lira, Uganda. Thanks to the donors who had a dream to build a church here for the Ugandan people. May blessings be given to all those through prayers and donations support our projects. May St. Francis of Assisi who once rebuilt

a church in Assisi with his bare hands, guide this project to completion. May St. Thomas More also be its protector for it will be in his name that the church will be dedicated.

The Following have been enrolled in the St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish Memorial Mass Society and will share in special masses to be celebrated at the 9:00am for 12 first Sundays beginning February 4, 2018.

their own parishes. The bride, the groom, or their parents must be registered and

living in this Parish for at least one year. Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter

Weekend is required as is participation in FOCCUS; a self-diagnostic inventory

designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. Please call 732-449-5765, ext. 134.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Catholic community of St. Catharine ‑ St. Margaret, gather in Christ's name to nurture spiritual growth through the various stages and challenges of life. We are committed through liturgy, sacraments and parish activities ‑ to proclaim the message of the Gospel, to provide a quality Catholic education for children and adults, to continue to build community and to serve those in need. Rich in the traditions established in this community during the last century, we challenge ourselves to live our faith in loving service to the community's residents and its many summer visitors. We affirm our concern for all members of the Mystical Body of Christ everywhere and particularly those who require assistance. And always, we seek to know and love God and to love our neighbor as Jesus taught us.
