Renée BurkeLegend yearbook adviser1000 E. Kaley St.Orlando, FL 32806

Dear Mrs. Burke:

Perhaps the Legend yearbook staff is seeking to recruit the talent of someone who can operate a camera, work well with others and contribute to the success of a publication. If this is the case, then please accept the accompanying resume for your review and consideration for the Photo Editor position in which these strengths and previous experience will be of value.

As a staffer of my high school yearbook, I met every deadline, captured amazing photographs at various campus events, gained the ability to utilize Photoshop and InDesign, worked with fellow staffers and assisted in their photography on their pages. With a background in photo and prior camera knowledge, I am able to capture photographs for the publication that will maximize reader interest and increase the number of books sold. As a hard worker and determined student, I assist others to help produce the best publication for our audience.

Creatively, I enjoy brainstorming interesting photography ideas that take into consideration the target audience and incorporate design trends to impact readership. As a quick learner, I would be a perfect candidate for the Photo Editor. This editor position would give me a chance to develop useful skills that will help in pursuing my long-term career goals.

Although the accompanying resume illustrates my background well, I feel a personal interview would better demonstrate my knowledge and abilities. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your review and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully yours,

REFLECTIONS

Page 5: Madison Nagle 2013

At the end of freshman year, Madeline Trybus told me all about journalism and suggested that I try it out. It sounded just like me, and Maddi and I always love the same things, so I decided to give it a shot. Journalism

immediately become my favorite class and Mrs. Burke contributed tremendously to my developing love for photography and writing. After a year in Journalism, I was eager to apply for Yearbook staff. Yearbook has become

a huge part of my life and I wouldn’t have wanted to spend my junior year with any other club on campus. The staff is like a family to me. I am so sad to see the seniors leave, but at the same time, I’m excited to see what will

come of next year. I have learned more this year, in this class, than in any other course I have ever taken. Mrs. Burke is the most amazing, talented teacher at Boone and everyone on campus knows it. I learned about actual production skills as I was a part of creating a book that will last a lifetime. I was taught basic rules related to photography, writing and design. My knowledge has grown and progressed over the course of the year. I was

taught to always stay on track and never get behind. The strict deadline schedule taught me how to manage my time. Teamwork contributed immensely to the production of the book. We all worked together to make sure that everything was perfect. I would like to think that I was a good team player because I helped other staffers on multiple occasions. When I had finished my deadline, I always tried to help others complete their deadlines. A

couple of times I went to take photographs for other staffers and I often went on interviews for others. Last summer, we had to sell ads for the community section of the book. This taught me how to act professional and approach

businesses. I also learned how to write receipts and file transactions. Journalism ethics played a huge role in my writing this year. I learned not to plagiarize and never to misquote anyone. I was a very dedicated staff member this year and I hope that my hard work will allow me to have an editor’s position next year. Yearbook is such a

valuable course to take. Mrs. Burke and fellow classmates taught me how to use advanced computer programs, such as InDesign, Photoshop and Bridge, and also taught me how to be a better person. I also learned great organization

and social skills that will ultimately help me in the future as I want to major in Public Relations and Business.

I would consider my girls’ volleyball deadline to be my most significant piece of work for the publication this year. This deadline was, without a doubt, my most difficult deadline, so I am beyond proud that it turned out to

be my best in the end. My purpose for this deadline was to capture great action shots and write a well-developed story that gave insight into the teams’ relationship and overall goals for the season. I struggled from the start. I had a hard time capturing action shots in the gym without them coming out blurry and out of focus. I became determined to get some good action shots. I went to every home game of the season to take pictures, interview, tweet or just watch and study the team dynamics. After lots of practice, and even some help from Delaney, I am

proud to say that more than half of the photographs on the page are mine. The story came easy, and the fact that I had gone to every home game and even spent time with the girls in the locker room definitely contributed. The

body copy discussed the teams’ goals for the season and the senior leadership that led the team. During this deadline, I learned so much. I learned how to utilize specific camera settings, set up and use the gym lighting,

interview and form a relationship with a coach, live tweet and write a wrap up. This deadline evolved immensely from the first draft to the final page in the book. Both the content and the design improved. My favorite things

about the finished product are the body copy and dominant cob. The body copy actually won “Best in Showcase” from FSPA in the state journalism competition.

My first deadline would benefit from a little more work. I was so nervous for my first deadline as a staffer, and I can honestly say that I tried my hardest at the time, but looking back at the page now, there are many things I wish I could go back and change. This deadline was in the “people” section and covered Angela Krauss’ photo

hobby. I took three photos of Angela with her camera to use on the page, and the other two photos are actually her own photography. I interviewed both her and her father for the body copy. During this deadline, I learned how to

interview, use Photoshop and InDesign, cob, and create secondary coverage. My knowledge of all of this has grown throughout the school year, so I know that if I were to redo this page now, it would look quite different. The layout

underwent some significant changes from the first draft to the final page in the book. One can see in my draft that I turned it in without any photos or secondary coverage. If I could go back and work on it now, I would definitely

rewrite the body copy with new interviews. I feel that the quotes I used are not exactly “quotable quotes,” but rather mere facts. I would also take some new photos of Angela. I don’t like how both photos of her shooting with her camera look the same, and I also don’t like how she is wearing the same outfit in two of the photos. Overall, I

feel satisfied and accomplished with my final piece because I know it was only my first deadline and it shows me how far I have come since the beginning of the school year.

I am very proud of this picture because it is in focus, shows great action and the

facial expression is priceless. Taylor’s legs and arms serve as leading lines to main

action in the photo. I shot over a thousand photos at Braves Brawl and this was, by

far, my best product of the night. I was so excited when this picture was selected for

the dominant on the cheer page. The action, facial expression and light to dark contrast

help draw the reader to the photo. (braves brawl 10-17_Nagle1207. jpg)

REFLECTIONTHREE

Page 13: Madison Nagle 2013

This picture was one of my favorites. I absolutely love the action and the depth of field. Her facial expression shows so much emotion and her hair flying up shows just how action-packed the shot actually is. I am attracted to this picture because it depicts

the true emotion that is displayed and felt out on the court. The girls on the team get so into every play, and I feel that I truly captured that.

REFLECTIONTHREE

I am proud of this picture because I tried hard to capture a shot that wasn’t blurry. I love the repetition and leading lines. I also love that there is a motion blur at the bot-

tom. I learned in San Francisco that motion blurs are often a great part of action shots because they show that the photos are truly action-filled shots. I am attracted to this

picture because of the repetition of the boys and the red and blue color scheme.(braves brawl 10-17_Nagle0133 jpg)

Page 15: Madison Nagle 2013

I believe that I was an important asset to this staff and the 2013 edition of the Legend yearbook because I contributed my photography, my writing and my time, to say the least. I spent hours upon hours this school year working on different deadlines, capturing shots at different events, staying up late to write stories and this list

goes on. I know that I wasn’t an editor, or Mrs. Burke (God Bless her), but I feel that I finished the year strong and did all that I could do as a first year staffer. Even when I had completed my deadline, I would come to workdays to help others. I feel that this book is ours and we must all work together to ensure that the final product is amazing. On different occasions, I even went with other staffers to help take pictures. I was definitely extremely committed.

I guess my biggest example for my commitment would be my volleyball deadline. I went to every single home game to take pictures, interview and learn about the team.

REFLECTIONFOUR

Page 16: Madison Nagle 2013

This year was an overall success, but there were small road bumps along the way. I feel that one of my biggest problems was getting different feedback from different editors. There were some deadlines where I felt that I was

going back and forth so much. For example I would give my work to editor 1. Editor 1 would make suggestions and I would make those changes. I would then turn in my work to Editor 2. Editor 2 would tell me to change things back to what they originally were, and the cycle continued until I would finally get to Mrs. Burke. From these situations, I learned that next year, editors should work together and be verbal about how things should be done. To keep this problem from arising next year, I feel that each specific editor needs to know exactly what they are saying, and if they don’t know thats okay.. . they just need to ask someone else instead of making something up to say. Overall, I feel that I handled this situation pretty well. I would always go along with what the editors said. I hope that next

year this problem can be worked out to save wasted time and stress.

REFLECTIONFIVE

Page 17: Madison Nagle 2013

I am proud to say that I accomplished all three goals listed on my midterm. My first goal was to meet every deadline, and I did. My last deadline was a little chaotic, but in the end, I ended up making deadline. I am proud that I learned how to manage my time and stay on track. My second goal was to not get re-subed by copy. This happened to me once before the midterm and I was heartbroken. I don’t exactly know why, but it really crushed me. I think it’s because I would consider myself a great writer, but I know now that changes were truly needed. Nevertheless, I am happy to say that I never got re-subed again after that. My third and final goal was to take

amazing pictures at Brave-Aid. I feel that I accomplished this goal. I took thousands of photos and three or four even ended up on the page in the book.

Y3. Sports feature writing Seniors Serve Up Success (pg. 163)

I selected this piece to represent me at the CSPA Gold Circle competition because I feel that it is my best piece of writing. The body copy provides an insight into the girls’ excellent season full of teamwork and leadership. I previously won “Best in Showcase” from FSPA for this piece.

Y32. Academic spreadRoom 224, The Pub Hub (pg. 58-59)

I selected my academic spread covering the topic of publications at Boone. This spread displays multiple events and describes the stress and pressure of the yearbook and newspaper staffs.

Y15. Sports action photo I BELIEVE I CAN FLY (pg. 148)

I selected this photograph for the “sports action photo” category because it shows action in the air as flyer, Taylor Moore, goes up in a stunt. Her facial expression is priceless. caption:I BELIEVE I CAN FLY. In the team’s Braves Brawl skit, Taylor Moors “dives” into the pool. “[When I’m performing], I feel like all eyes are on me and that I have to put on the best show that I can,” Moore said. The cheerleaders placed third in Braves Brawl.
