Message from Fr Joe

Our gospel this weekend from Matthew gives

us a parable commonly known as the Parable of the

Sower We all know this story we have heard it hun-

dreds of times It is one of the trademark parables of

Jesusrsquo ministry It is a familiar story of a farmer who

goes out to the fields to plant seeds and some seeds

landed on rocky ground some on shallow ground

some with thorns and some fell on rich soil

My dear friends when the crowds heard this

parable the disciples came back to Jesus and asked the question Why do you speak in parables

Jesus answered I speak in parables because ldquothey look but do not see and hear but do not listen or

understandrdquo Maybe that is our problem in todayrsquos world Our ears have turned dull We have

ears but we are not listening deep enough to what Jesus is telling us We talk too much instead of

listening or we talk before we listen or we listen without understanding Yes if we really want to

listen to the word of God we should listen not only with our ears but also with all our mind heart

and soul

So today let us ask God to open our heart our eyes our mind and our ears so that we may

look and seehellip hear and understand the word of God Let us also ask God to water our lives so that

the seed that is implanted in us will grow in its fullness so that one day we will be able to share

the abundant harvest with others

the power of Godrsquos word Isaiah extols its fruitfulness the

LORD promising that it will flower just as the fertile earth does

when watered by rain or snow Jesus tells of the sower whose

indiscriminate scattering of the word of the kingdom leads to

different outcomes depending on where it lands May we listen

attentively today soaking up Godrsquos word so that it may bear

fruit in us
