THE BIG 3Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time

visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to

be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDSGather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up

the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the

opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a

better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may

be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERSJoin a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover

the joy of serving.

The

JOURNEYBY SHARON VREE

Have you heard or seen the words “The Journey” around Faith Church? Are you curious to know what journey they’re talking about? Well, look no further. Pastor Mike Pitsenberger explains all about this adventurous class held at Faith Church:

THE JOURNEY is a meaningful WALK with a GROUP of adults GUIDED by three primary QUESTIONS:

1. Who is God?

2. Who am I?

3. What Does God desire to do through me?

The Journey plays a significant part in fulfilling the vison of Faith Church. It is one of a number of environments for “growing the connected.” What makes The Journey different from Bible studies or Mini-church is the higher level of commitment.

Journey Groups meet 2 hours each week over a 6 to 8-month period. Each group is made up of 6-12 people. Group members prepare for each session with study, reflection, Bible reading and prayer. Participants are asked to walk with a spiritual mentor, a mature believer, twice a month.

The Journey has been challenging and shaping men and women at Faith Church for the past 10 years. Over 200 have participated in this intensive spiritual growth process. Currently 5 of our 7 campuses have Journey Groups wrestling with a deeper understanding of how God shapes us through our gifts, strengths, and life circumstances so that we can live into the “...good works, that Godhas prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10, ESV).

I asked Journey participants to share what The Journey has meant to them:

Robin: “Being a part of a Journey Group is a wonderful tool, helping me to reach a deeper level of knowing Jesus. I am also realizing how very important it is to my personal faith walk to be a part of a community of like-minded believers as we encourage, uphold, and share together.”

Mike: “Through The Journey coursework, community with depth that fosters wholeness and encourages curiosity and growth, and, most importantly, DIA-LOGUE about life, faith, theology and spirituality, my spirit and spiritual life has been resurrected with a passion I could not have imagined.”

Sara: “The Journey has been a catalyst to my Christian walk, where I am able to grow through fellowship in an authentic community that loves me. The Journey is unlike anything I have ever done; it is a study where I don’t learn facts about God, but I learn to identify His presence in my life.”

Lisa: “The Journey process was a gift of grace. I am grateful for the privilege and blessing to be part of an authentic, caring community seeking to understand more deeply who God is, who I am in Christ and how to participate in what He is doing. The fellowship and presence of others, our group and my mentor was a source of joy, strength and encouragement. The gracious presence of the Holy Spirit was with us on our Journey.”

I was in one of the first Journey Groups at Faith Church. My experience changed my life. Sharing my story in a safe, caring community helped me see how God uses my failures and struggles to equip me for ministry. As I began to understand God’s shaping work in my life, I wrestled with my “next steps.” For me, next steps meant college…seminary…and, now again I’m seeking God for His next step.

Walking with others on the Journey is an ongoing part of the good works God’s called me to do. What a privilege it is to see God meet each man and woman, helping them grasp more fully who He is, who He created them to be, and how He wants to use them uniquely for His kingdom purposes.

TAKING PRAYER SERIOUSLY.

“The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers” (1 Peter 4:7; NRSV).

In this verse, God teaches two ways to take your prayer life seriously.

First, realize what’s at stake. Peter says the “end of all things is near” and Christ will soon return to judge the living and the dead.

Since Christ’s return is soon, we can’t afford to be prayer-less Christians.

Look around the world. What do you see? I see: war in the Middle East, a growing international slave trade, savage terrorism, severe drought, nations bullying other nations, corrupt governments, immigration struggles, persecution of Christians on the rise and moral madness across the globe.

I also see a world of people without Jesus Christ.

Paul reminds us that “now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). We need to pray for: lost people, sons and daughters who are running away from the faith of their childhood, people to repent and to place their trust in Jesus Christ, and revival to sweep across our land and around the globe.

Do we realize what’s at stake? Heaven or hell for every person. We won’t take our prayer lives seriously until we realize what’s at stake.

Second, discipline yourself. The Greek word for “discipline” means ‘to be sober; self-controlled.’ The idea is that we are to keep a clear head in order to pray effectively.

Every day we are bombarded with information from tablets, smart phones, television, newspapers, magazines, radio, emails, tweets, and text messages. How can we keep a clear head? How can we stay focused on God?

It isn’t easy, but it begins with discipline. You have to discipline yourself and watch how you spend your time.

If you don’t plan to pray, it’s unlikely that you will pray. The Bible says that Jesus “would withdraw to desolate places and pray” (Luke 5:16). We are also told that “rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed” (Mark 1:35).

Jesus, knowing what was at stake, disciplined Himself and withdrew from everything and everyone to be with God.

Do you have a plan for prayer? Do you and God get away together?

John DeVries, founder of Mission India, tells the story of a church that identified 160 homes in their neighborhood. The church prayed for 80 of the 160 homes. After some time, the church visited all 160 homes. When asked if they wanted prayer, only one of the un-prayed for homes said yes, but over 60 of the homes prayed for said yes.

Our prayers move the heart and hand of God!

In 1 Peter 4:7 God is saying that it is time for us to take prayer seriously. What if all of us did? What might God do?

BY MIKE PITSENBERGER

WHO ISAMYLENTING?

Q: What’s your name? A: Amy Lenting

Q; Where are you from? A: St John, Indiana

Q: Can you tell us about your family? A: My husband Matt & I will be married 20 years this coming November, and we are the proud parents of Jake (15) and Anna (13).

Q: How did you first get connected to Faith Church? A: Our experience with Faith Church came through the devastating loss of Matt’s parents (Hank & Marcella Lenting) in June of 2013. Hank & Marcella were active members at the Cedar Lake campus. Our family were strangers to the leadership and congregation, but they lovingly reached out to us during and after their passing. They truly ministered to us as the hands and feet of Jesus. We were drawn to the Cedar Lake campus through this experience and have been members since October 2013.

Q: What have you seen God do at Faith Church? A: I see God using worship services, events, ministries, people, etc. to continue to challenge all of us in new and exciting ways to make our daily walk with Jesus deeply personal. I am constantly amazed at the different ways God uses ministries here to draw people in and penetrate hearts no matter where people are at in their spiritual walk. Q: What do you enjoy about the worship services? A: I love the worship. It is such a tangible way to feel the presence of God here on earth.

Q: Where do you serve at Faith Church? A: I serve on the Prayer Team; my husband, Matt, & I have the privilege of leading a Mini-Church; and I currently am the Mini-Church Leader Coach for our campus.

Q: How do you connect with others at your campus? A: I enjoy talking with people before and after services, but I love my past and present Mini- Church families! Studying God’s Word with others is such a great way to connect.

Q: What have you enjoyed about your Journey group? A: The curriculum used for The Journey is phenomenal! Although at times it has been very difficult, I enjoy examining my life through this particular lens. The Journey walks you through the mountaintop highs and valley lows of your past using Romans 8:28 as your guide and a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Q: What have you seen God do in your life? A: Where do I begin?!? I see a faithful God (Deut. 7:9) who has never left us in the hard times (Deut. 31:6), who has always made sure we never felt abandoned (Psalm 54:4), and a Father who loves us so much and constantly shows us in tangible ways that He walks each day beside us. (John 14:21).

Q: Anything else you want to share? A: My favorite verses: : “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:11-13, NIV)
