A Few Moments with Father David…

The Day of Pentecost

The fiftieth day after Easter is the Day of Pentecost. Pentecost originally was

and is the Jewish festival, fifty days after Passover. When the disciples

gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost, they experienced the empowering descent

of the Holy Spirit into their midst. They all begun speaking the praises of God,

and the people nearby, from what ever country they came, heard the praises in

their own languages. It was a wondrous inspiration in the moment, but

symbolically it served as a sign that the ancient prophecy of the outpouring of

the Spirit had been fulfilled, transforming the followers of Jesus into the Body

of Christ, and witnesses to Christ’s ongoing presence in the world.

You and I do not merely hold up the memory of Jesus of Nazareth from two

millennia ago, we represent Christ to the world with the ministry of

reconciliation that he gave to us. You are a vessel of the Holy Spirit, because

the Spirit of God dwells within you. This happens at baptism, and is recalled

and renewed at every Eucharist. It is a high calling to represent Christ and his

Church; to bear witness to him wherever you may be. That is why we mind

what we say and what we do as Christians. We are in a process to become

more and more through the days, what Christ has made us through the Spirit

that dwells within us.

Had it been just a human ordeal, the movement of Jesus, the itinerate rabbi of

Palestine, would have lasted only weeks beyond his crucifixion. The Holy

Spirit was the empowering element, that turned a first century Jewish

splinter-group into a living communion that survived the fall of Rome, the

Middle Ages, and is thriving through modern secularization. The Church was

and continues to be a very flawed human body, but because of

Pentecost...because the Holy Spirit is the moving force undergirding it, the

message of Christ’s Resurrection continues to flow through each and every

generation.

Take your place in the environments in which you dwell, to carry on Christ’s

work of reconciliation in the world. Let the Spirit work within you, so that

people hearing you, will hear what God has in mind for them to hear. You may

be speaking as you normally speak, but the Pentecost miracle is that through

you God’s Word can go forth, and will not return to God empty; but it will

accomplish that which God has purposed, and prosper in that for which God

sent it. (Isaiah 55:10, 11)

Stewardship Corner

One of the Holy Days of June is the

Feast of St. Barnabas on June 11th. As

we recall this figure of the Apostolic

age of the church we should note that

while he was in Antioch, where believ-

ers were first called “Christians,” the

brethren there insisted in sending relief

funds to the hungry in Jerusalem. We

too have a need to remember those who

are less fortunate than ourselves. We do

so through the DeGeorge Center drives,

through Meals on Wheels support,

Deacons’ and Rector’s Discretionary

Funds, Alvin Food Pantry, and the

portion of our General Fund that goes to

work beyond the parish. Simplicity,

good management and economy are

virtues to be commended to every indi-

vidual and every family. We incorporate

these in our Church family also. Of

course, this is a matter of Good Chris-

tian Stewardship. The practice of Stew-

ardship is really a Way of Life. How we

apply these virtues in our use of God’s

gifts of Time, Abilities and Possessions

in our daily lives is of great importance.

“...The Church at Jerusalem sent

Barnabas off to Antioch...he witnessed the grace of God, and began to encourage them with all resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; And in the proportion than any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the relief of the brethren living in Judea. And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders. Acts 11:22-23, 20-30

the work to be done has already

begun. Plans to re-purpose spaces in

the current parish offices is also part

of his project.

Discretionary Funds at Grace

The rector and deacons are involved

in many aspects of outreach in the

church and in the community. One

avenue of their assistance to people in

need is through the their respective

discretionary funds. Both accounts are

funded principally by special

donations, and monthly first Sunday

“loose plate offerings”—the currency

and specially designated checks

among the offerings—always go to

these outreach accounts.

Food Donations/June Ingathering for the DeGeorge Center Veterans’ Residence The Housing Corporation of Greater Houston manages a variety of housing for veterans and persons with special needs, including the De George Hotel which serves only homeless men and women veterans in a smoke– and drug-free environment. Upon their arrival, residents receive new household items such as linens, towels and personal hygiene supplies. The hotel’s location puts residents in proximity to Metro bus and light rail lines. They enjoy an onsite Library, computer station with fax and copy machines, cable television in the lobby, much needed service providers such as the VA, social security and county health department, transportation for medical appointments, and an emergency food pantry. All the bare necessities. While many organizations and corpora-tions make funds available to maintain the building and staff, it’s people like you and me that help fill in the gaps. Suggested items include coffee, tea and food items that can be prepared in the microwave: Hormel Complete meals, tuna, canned soups, chili and chicken, fruit bars, puddings and fruit cups, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and cheese crackers. There is a suggested list of items on the Parish Hall bulletin board.
