William Henry Drummond, dialect poet and physician, vas born
April 13, 1854, at Currawn House, near Mohill, C01m.ty Leitrim, Ireland,
the son of George Drummond (originally Drumm}, officer of the Royal Irish
Constabulary, and of Elizabeth Morris Boden , In 1856, the Drummond family
moved to Tawley near the "Three Sisters" mountiafns and the Bay of Donegal,
where they lived at Tawley Manor House. Drummondt s three brothers, John,
George, and Tom were born here . Paddy McNulty, the teacher at the village
school became Drummond' s life-long friend. At this time, Drummond learned
the art of fishing which he practised throughout his life. "In 1863, the
Drummond family moved back to Mohill. The next year, they moved to Montreal,
Canada, where the father died eighteen months later. Drummond attended
Montreal High School which he left at the age of fifteen to take up the
study of telegraphy. He was first stationed as a telegrapher at Bord-~-
Plouffe, in 1869. During the six summers he worked there, he came into
contact with the French-Canadian woodsmen and farmers whose broken English -
he imitated so well in his unfque poetry. After completing high schoot.,
Drummond entered McGill University in 1878, to study medicine. Distin-
guishing himself more in athletics than in the classroom (he vas at one
time the Canadian amateur champion of "fast-walking"),he failed McGill in
his second year. In the fall of 1883, Drummo,nd camped at Silver Lake when
he visited Dr. George Nelson, grandson of Wolfred Nelson and medical
practitioner at Marbleton, Dudswell Township, and he established a friend-
ship vith Rev. Thomas Shaw Chapman, a pioneer kno1m as "Pastor of the
i
ii
Uplands". He also camped at Clear Lake near Marbleton where he established
a friendship with Maj or John Weyland, his brother, Charles, and his sister.
Drummond resumed his studies at Bishop's Medical School, Bishop's
College, in Montreal, and graduated vith the·M.D. degree in 1884. He also
delivered the valedictory address of the graduating class. His f'irst
medical appointment was house surgeon at Western Hospital. He then set up
practice in Stornoway, near Lake Megantic. In 1885, he moved to Knowlton
to take over the practice of the retiring physician. In 1888, he returned
to Montreal where he set up his practice and residence in st. Antoine Street.
In this period, Drummond became interested in the breeding and shoving.of'
Irish Terriers, which resulted in the establishment of the Kinkora Kennels
on the St. Maurice River in Northern Quebec. He also became president of'
the Montreal Kennel Club and the Irish Terrier Club of' Canada, and was a
member of the Canadian Kennel Club, the Canadian Fox Terrier Club, and the
Irish Terrier Club of America. His hunting and fishing interests led to
his association vith the Laurentian Club. In 1893, Drummond became engaged
to May Isobel Harvey, also a burgeoning writer, whom he married on April. 18
of the folloving year, at Savannah la Mar, Jamaica, the birthplace of' his
bride. They established their residence at 294 Mountain Street (now number
1181) in Montreal. At this time, Drummond occupied the chair of' medical
jurisprudence at Bishop's College Medical School. In 1896, the Drummonds
moved their residence to St. Catherine Street, where they remained :for six ,
years. Here three sons were born to Drummond: t~e first dying a :few hours
after birth, the second, Barclay, born in 1896, and WilliamHarvey (ffBiJ.1y lf ) ,
born in 1901 and died in 1904. Barclay. ("Boochus") became a. lieutenant in
the Fifth Royal Highlanders Regiment of Canada, attended the Thomas School
iii
of Aviation, and became a pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service~ a Captain
in the Royal Air Force, and an instructor at the R.A.F. School of Aerial
Fighting at Beamsville, Ontario. Barclay died in 1933. Drmmnond's fourth
child, Moira, was born in 1904. In 1902, Drummond journeyed to Engl.and,
Scotland, and Ireland. He bought mining property ("Drummond Mines"') with
his brothers at Cobalt, Kerr Lake, Ontario in 1905. In 1906 ~ Drummond's
mother died. In the spring of the following year, he made his last Journey
to Cobalt to assist in the smallpox outbreak in the mining camp; he himself
suffered a stroke which caused paralysis, and on April 6, 1907, he died of
cerebral haemorrhage. He was buried from st. George' s Church~ in the
Mount Royal Cemetary, Montreal.
Drummond's published works include The Habitant (1897); Phil-Q-Rum' s
Canoe and Madeleine de Verch~res (1898); Johnnie Courteau (1901); The
Voyageur (1905); The Great Fight (1908), published posthumously and contain
ing a biographical sketch of Drummond by his wife; and Poetical 'Works (1912).
All were published in New York and London, except The Voyageur, published
only in New York. Several were illustrated by Frederick Simpson Coburn.

the University of Toronto (1902), the honorary degree of D.e.L. from Bishop's
College (1905), Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1899), and FelloW" of

THE DRUMMOND TIN TRUNK
A tin trunk measuring 30 1/2" x 16" x 12 11 and containing the
papers and manuscripts of Dr. William Henry Drummond and some papers and
manuscripts of his wife, May Isobel Harvey Drummond, were lef't, on loan,
in the keeping of the OsIer Library of McGill University, on April 26, 194~
by Moira Drummond Craig, daughter of IY.H. Drummond and wife of' Surgeon
Commander D.D. Craig, R.N. On May 8, 1968, Dr. Craig gave permanent rights
to the contents of the trunk to the OsIer Library.l
In 1948, a brief inventory was made of the contents o:f the trunk by
Dr. W.W. Francis, Librarian of the OsIer Library.2 A more detailed listing
prepared in 1970 did not include the five books of lecture notes, two scrap
books of clippings, "Barclay pedfgree"; black note-book, seven miscellaneous
books of MS poems, note-book with illustration of "The Habitant" , three
pocket engagement books, galley proofs, sheaf of typed and penned MSS,
correspondence of 1923 re "new edition", box of Kodak plates, and three
"Every Day Files". The present listing is meant to be complete.
T'ne items inventoried are listed and shelved in the order in which
Dr. Francis has listed them, with minor changes and additions. For example,
all correspondence has been grouped into series no. 10, both scrapbooks into
series no. 1, and all three "Every Day Files" into series no. 17. The
marriage certificate and illustration of "M'Sieu Smit" were removed :from the
correspondence grouping and listed separately as items no. 21 and 22.
For the 1970 list, all correspondence was. removed from the manila
lLetter to C. Desbarats, Librarian, OsIer Library.
2Appended, with series nos. added.
vii

envelopes in which it had been previously stored, arranged in chronological
order under the name of the correspondent, and stored in file folders. More
correspondence was subsequently found in the "Every Day Files". It is listed
in the alphabetical order in which it was found, with no attempt to rearrange
the letters in chronological order.
All miscellaneous manuscripts from the "Manila Envelopes" section of'
Dr. Francis' listing which are not correspondence, have been grouped into
series no. 25.
Whenever poems are cited, titles have been taken as written on the
manuscript and have not been verified; if no title appears on the manuscript,
the first line has been quoted, or the subject of the poem, as f'ar as it
could be determined, has been given.
