The Origins and History of the Bay Area Perfin Association

Alan Sandy (LM#2539) [Exerpts from the BAPA Newsletter 11:1-2; February 2008]

On February 24th, 1992, the much-lamented Jack Southern wrote to me saying, "Enclosed is a copy of the attendance at John Randall's swapfest yesterday. Now that we all know what each collects we can come better prepared." That may have been the initial meeting of what became the Bay Area Perfin Association (perhaps foreshadowed by meetings after the 1990 Precancel Society meeting in Concord, California). Among those in attendance were current members, Bruce and Dorothy Brunell, Bruce Chisholm, and Neil Abbey as well as John and myself. There were ten of us. We continued meeting on a more or less informal basis at John's place until 1998 when the introductory issue of the newsletter appeared on 13 June 1998. Since then, we have made many contributions to perfin collecting in America. John Randall's US Perfin Catalogue is a model for perfin catalogues of the future. If you look in your latest copy of the

Bulletin at the list of officers, you will see that we are greatly over-represented for our size: from President Ed Linn on down! By 1998 the membership or potential member list of BAPA had grown to 18 and we had begun to meet jointly with the Golden Gate Precancel Society. We continued to hold informal meetings whenever the spirit moved but we also had three or four meetings per year announced by an issue of the newsletter as well as by Bruce Brunell's letters to members of the GGPC. In the spring we have met annually at Westpex, for years held at Hilton (the old Jack Tarr) Hotel in San Francisco and now held at the San Francisco Airport Marriott. I don't know for sure but I do think that BAPA was and maybe still is the only organized regional perfin or perfin and precancel group in the world. BAPA is now entering its second decade of perfinning.

Collecting Netherlands Edited and expanded from a note from Ron Whyte (#2585)

In response to the Netherlands material in the May Bulletin, Ron, a self-proclaimed ‘Crazy Canuck’, wrote noting that he is a member of the Netherlands Perfin Club in addition to being a member of the Perfins Club. He and his wife were in the Netherlands “...back in ’97...” during that Club’s celebration of its 10th anniversary. At that time he met the late Ruud Hammik, who was demonstrating the workings of a POKO machine as part of the celebrations. For this occasion he was using special coils of stamps that were made up at the Post Office for this purpose. Unlike most classic POKO stamps of the Netherlands, these coil stamps did not have the signature syncopated perforations. Ron shared the following picture of Mr. Hammik [apologies to the spectator and guard edited out of the picture to better show the POKO machine] by the POKO machine.

Also included was a picture of the 10th anniversary cover prepared using the POKO stamps created during the demonstration of the machine. The SC pattern perforated is that of H. Smits & Co., in Almelo. Ron also shared his method of collecting (labeling in a stock book) and observed that the arbitrary consecutive numbering of the Netherlands perfin catalog will mean renumbering many of his labels now that the new edition of the catalog has been released. The third illustration shows an example part of one of Ron’s pages, showing how he files his perfins – and a necessary renumbering based on the

new sequential numbering. Unsuspected by Ron, it also shows (to my way of thinking) a flaw in the new catalog which I hadn’t noticed last month when I reviewed it.

As you can see in the illustration the POKO perfin pattern in these stamps is (in US Catalog notation) ‘KL/O’. This pattern was #383 in the 1st edition of the Netherlands catalog and was described as ‘KLO’. It fell, logically, between patterns ‘KLD and ‘K.M.’ In the 2nd catalog this pattern is sequentially identified as #378, so renumbering will be necessary. However, even more frustrating to your editor’s way of thinking -- in an attempt to reflect its usage by Kol & Co. it is now described as ‘KOL’ and is filed between ‘KOELIT’ and ‘KPF’. No cross referencing is done at KL/O in the catalog to indicate the movement from KLO to KOL. Thus my first thought was that the pattern had been deleted. Ron noted that the only POKO he was unable to find in the list was KOL – and now we know why; it was reported as KLO in the 1st version of the catalog. Ron also made a very good suggestion which I act on later in this Bulletin; “...without the new catalog, [...] a cross reference of numbers might have helped

Miscellaneous Stuff There are two long lists in this issue without headlines or much explanation. The material completed just above is the completion of the checklist for B Section patterns in the new Rev-Perf Catalog. This checklist was begun in last month’s Bulletin (pages 89-90) and is completed here (pages 95-105). The second listing (p. 114-118) is the list suggested by Ron Whyte (end of article p.94) linking the new (2nd edition) Netherland’s Catalog sequential catalog numbers to the different sequential numbers used in the 1st edition. • Table 1 lists all of the patterns in both

catalogs, linking (=>) old numbers to new where appropriate. Some new numbers were assigned to new patterns discovered since the publication of the 1st edition of the catalog, and these only a single number in the listing.

• Tables 2 and 3 are listings of unused numbers in the sequential assigned catalog numbers. And,

• Table 4 summarizes the count of patterns reported in each.

Bruce Brunell reports that he “...still has a very large stock of US Perfins in the rates of C and down available for want lists. C= $1.00, D+ =.50, D = .25, and E's & F's for 0.15.” Send him your want lists (address on last page.) I need new material to publish in the Bulletin; the file of articles is empty! Now would be a good time to dust off your unfinished manuscripts or unshared ideas for articles. And, we are sti l l looking for a new editor for the Bulletin. Please volunteer to fill this position for the Club!

Discover St. Louis Tour Mon. - 8:15-11:45 a.m.

(You will be back in time for the Early Bird Session.)

Discover St. Louis is more than just the Arch. St. Louis is chock full of intriguing places to visit and experience. So come away with us for a narrated tour which will give you an up close look at the best of St. Louis. Laclede's Landing, a nine-block historic area named for the city's founder, showcases century-old warehouses filled with nightspots and restaurants. Bumping along the original cobblestone streets will bring you to the riverfront where it all began in 1764. Soaring above the Mississippi is the magnificent 630' Gateway Arch, symbol of St. Louis' role as the Gateway to the West. Before leaving downtown you'll also see the oldest cathedral west of the Mississippi, the Old Courthouse where the Dred Scott case began its way through the legal system, as well as the new Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Edward Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams.

The oldest surviving residential neighborhood in St. Louis, Soulard, centers around an outdoor market that dates from the 1700s where you can find everything from live rabbits to alligator meat. A drive through the area features red brick row houses built in the 18th century and the seventy-city block area that encompasses Anheuser-Busch

Brewery. The first public park west of the Mississippi, Lafayette Park, is the centerpiece of a neighborhood that boasts the largest collection of Victorian-era architecture in the nation. It has been named one of the "ten prettiest painted lady neighborhoods" in the country. A "must stop" is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. Is interior is covered with 83,000 square feet of mosaics, the largest such collection in the world. Your guide will conduct a tour of the interior. If the Cathedral is unavailable, a stop will be made at the Missouri History Museum instead. No trip to St. Louis is complete without a drive through the curving paths of Forest Park, one of the largest public parks in the United States. Filled with some of the city's major civic attractions, it was the site of the 1904 World's Fair and was magnificently restored for the Fair's centennial in 2004. The cost is $29.00 per person based on a minimum of twenty five people. Cost includes a 25-passenger motorcoach, a professional Discover St. Louis guide, all reservations and arrangements. Gratuities for the guide and driver are not included

Auction

Thursday - 2:00 p.m. Donation lots gratefully accepted, as well as lots to be sold for a commission of 15%. The PSS plans to have an auction listing available at the convention prior to the auction and the earlier lots are submitted,

the easier it will be to prepare this list. (Lots will be accepted at the convention – but will not make it onto the list...)

Muny Theater Thursday - 6:40 p.m.

Although many stars have appeared on stage at The Muny, one essential truth has remained about the nation's oldest and largest outdoor theatre; its story is the story of St. Louis- and of St. Louisans. The dream of St. Louisans for a permanent outdoor theatre in Forest Park probably dates

back to the 1904 World's Fair. The realization of that dream began in 1916 with plans for an outdoor production of As You Like It by Margaret Anglin's Shakespearean troupe. And the dream became a reality in 1917 with the construction of the Municipal Theatre for six performances of

Aida, produced for the 13th Annual Convention of Advertising Clubs of the World.

The Perfins Bulletin – June 2008 – Page 111

The production we will be seeing is MY ONE AND ONLY, the Gershwin Musical featuring "'S’ Wonderful," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," and "Strike Up The Band." A tap-dancing, barn-storming pilot and a beautiful, singing swimming star meet, fall in love and find true happiness in the fun and frothy MY ONE AND ONLY. This is the musical with planeloads of comedy, dazzling

dancing, and some of the Gershwin brothers' very best tunes. (Includes a backstage tour.) Cost per person is $26 and includes the backstage tour that begins at 6:40 p.m. with a minimum of twenty people.

St. Louis Landmarks

Friday - ??

St. Louis' history and architecture are fascinating and today you'll have a chance to experience some of the best of both. Your first stop will be at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, better known in St. Louis as White Haven (even though the house is green). Grant was stationed at Jefferson Barracks and paid a visit to the family of his West Point roommate. He married Julia Dent and lived here for a time prior to the Civil War. A new museum was opened at the site in 2007. The site provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about one of our country's legendary soldiers, and our eighteenth president. The Chatillon DeMeni1 Mansion was built in two sections by families with very different lifestyles. A four-room brick farmhouse was built by Hemi Chatillon in 1848. Dr. Nicolas DeMenil purchased the home in 1856 and had it transformed into a Greek Revival Mansion. The house contains an excellent collection of memorabilia from the 1904 World' s Fair. Lunch will be served at another St. Louis landmark - Bevo Mill. August A. Busch, Sr. (of brewery fame) studied various construction methods of

Dutch windmills and built an authentic mill between his home at Grant's Farm and the brewery. Finished in 1916 for the then incredible sum of $250,000, the Bevo boasts unique architectural details. Then you're off to Anheuser-Busch for a visit to the century-old Clydesdale stables where you'll get a look at the magnificent horses that have become a symbol of the brewery. There'll also be time to relax over complimentary tasting of the brewery's products in the Hospitality Room. (Per the May Precancel Forum also included is a visit to the Crown Candy Kitchen – no further info.) Cost per person is $55.00 with a minimum of thirtv people per motorcoach. Cost includes a 54-passenger motorcoach, a professional Discover St. Louis guide, tours of the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site and stables only tour at Anheuser-Busch, admission to the Chatillon DeMenil Mansion, lunch at Bevo Mill, gratuities for the guide and driver, all reservations and arrangements.

Perfins as Postal History It's In The Bag! Rudy Roy (#1124)

In my quest for uses of perfins on cover, the example shown (front and back illustrated) is one of the more unusual I have come across. It is a cloth bag 130mm wide by 155mm in height. The bag has a drawstring that appears to be the

only way its contents were secured. The date of posting is unreadable but the 50y brown stamp was not issued until 1952, and as the 100y stamps were also reissued in 1952 without the extra zeros this probably dates from 1952 - 53.

The "DBK" perfins of Daiichi Bussan Kaisha, Ltd. are in all the stamps. As the stamps have what appears to be a roller cancel, used for bulk mail, this would appear to have been one of a number of similar advertising parcels, though it is the only one I have seen. The Daiichi Trading Company is a leader of the Mitsui group, acting primarily as an agent for other companies in the group, and coordinates the domestic and overseas activities of affiliated companies. Nidera Uruguaya, S.A. is a major

exporter of grains from Uruguay. It is also a wholesale distributor of imported food products - raw, semi-finished, and finished. There is no remaining material in the bag to determine what the product sample was. The fact that a cloth bag apparently closed only using its own drawstring and was considered sufficiently secure enough to mail a sample of something from Japan across the Pacific Ocean to Uruguay in South America is most unusual!
