Lewis and Clark’s route took them up the Missouri River, across the Rockies, and along the Columbia and other rivers to the Pacific Ocean and back, a total of about 8,000 miles. They arrived back in St. Louis in September 1806 after almost two and a half years. Their friends, families, and even President Jefferson feared they were dead. 2. Sacagawea (or Sacajawea) was a Shoshone Indian who interpreted for the corps. She was the teenaged wife of a French-Canadian trader who joined Lewis and Clark as a guide in November, 1804, when the expedition reached Indian villages and set up camp in what is now North Dakota. 3. York was Clark’s slave, who became the first black man to cross the continent north of Mexico. 4. Only one man died, Sgt. Charles Floyd, due to a burst appendix. He was buried at what is now Sioux City, Iowa. 5. Lewis, who was once Thomas Jefferson’s personal secretary, suffered from depression and alcoholism, and committed suicide in 1809. While the routes of this expedition were much too difficult for use by emigrants in wagons, the mapping did prove immensely useful for future westward travel.

Lou Boyd once noted that people who don't play bridge don't understand its drawing power. InChicago once, 26,000 people showed up to watch a bridge tournament! He also stated that themost widely used objects of diversion in the world are … playing cards. If a country has paper, its people have playing cards.

Ì Why bridge instead of poker?...Bridge is for people who like to play cards...Poker is for people who

like to bet — by watching cards.… Poker is not a card game, it’s just a betting game that happens to usecards.

Dan McGuire, Las Vegas, NV, Bridge Bulletin, August 2008, p. 8

Í Bridge is such a sensational game that I wouldn’t mind being in jail if I had three cellmates who were

decent players and who were willing to keep the game going 24 hours a day. Warren Buffett

Side Game Series

A Side Game Series is a series of at least three one-

session games open to all players. Participants may

enter as many sessions as they wish and play with the

same or different partners. Overall ranking is done on

an individual basis by computing the sum of each

players two best games. At NABC and regional

tournaments, gold points are awarded to section-top

placing players who have competed in at least two

sessions of this event. Each session of a Side Game

Series may also be run as a one-session stratified

pairs.

90+ Study

Scientists have recently become intensely interested in what could be called a super memory club, the fewer thanone in two hundred who has lived past 90 without a trace of dementia. Dr Claudia Kawas, a neurologist at theUniversity of California, Irvine, said that “it’s very important to use your brain, to keep challenging your mind, but allmental activities may not be equal. We’re seeing some evidence that a social component may be crucial.” The 90+Study begun in 1981 has included more than 14,000 people aged 65 and over, and more than 1,000 aged 90 orolder. The evidence suggests that people who spend long stretches of their days, three hours and more, engrossedin some mental activities such as cards may be at reduced risk of developing dementia. It is difficult to distinguishcause from effect, however. Are they active because they are sharp, or sharp because they are active? At LagunaWoods, a sprawling retirement community of 20,000 south of Los Angeles, many residents make delicatecalculations requiring a strong memory at one place – the bridge tables!
