From the 1994 NY Bridge winter regional bulletin find the words listed After all the words are crossed out a phrase will remain

How to Be a Good Partner Marty Bergen The Bridge Bulletin January 1984

1 Remember that this is only a card game Have a good time and make sure partner does too

2 Donrsquot give lessons (unless you are being paid to do so)

3 Like partner and root for himher 100 percent Remember you and

partner are on the same side and [partner] wants to win as much as

you do Itrsquos OK to be nice to a partner you happen to live with

4 When you choose to play bridge with someone it is unfair to get upset when

heshe doesnrsquot play any better than usual

5 Never say anything to partner unless you would want himher to say it to you

Never ldquoresultrdquo (criticize partner for a normal action that didnrsquot work this time)

6 If you feel the urge to be nasty sarcastic or critical excuse yourself and

take a walk

7 When you have time between hands try to discuss topics other than bridge

Never discuss a hand just played with your partner except to clear up a misunderstanding in bidding

or defense

8 Think twice before verbally analyzing a hand (you may be wrong) Never assume partner made a

mistake until the hand is over and you have time to think it through

9 When asking another player about a disaster ask about your hand not partnerrsquos Donrsquot ever

criticize or embarrass partner in front of others Never side with an opponent against your partner

10 If you are too good for a partner or donrsquot enjoy playing with himher choose someone else next

time rather than being a martyr (but donrsquot dump a partner unless yoursquore sure)

A Big $ecret to Becoming Rich

STOP SPENDING Warren Buffett an avid bridge player and the third richest person in the world according to

Brains on Retirement

For all the benefits of retirement - less stress fewer obligations time to travel- new

research paints a bleaker picture Without careful attention and some preventative steps

retirement may take quite a toll on our facilities The earlier people retire the sooner

decline of mental facilities But so can mentally stimulating hobbies like bridge learning a new language or

Forbes lives in the same Omaha Nebraska home he bought four decades ago for $31500 I could end the

deficit in 5 minutes Warren Buffet told CNBC You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit

of more than 3 of GDP all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election

More than the Milky Way

The number of permutations in a deck of cards is really HUGE 8 x 1067 ( an 8 with 67 zeroes after it) Thus

there are more card combinations than stars in the Milky Way (about 400 billion)Dan Lewis 15 Things You Didnt Know about Your Favorite Games Readers Digest August 2013 p 85

Brains on Retirement

For all the benefits of retirement - less stress fewer obligations time to travel- new

research paints a bleaker picture Without careful attention and some preventative steps

retirement may take quite a toll on our facilities The earlier people retire the sooner

theyrsquore apt to get Alzheimerrsquos disease according to a study of 392 men (International

Journal of Geriatric Psychology 2010) Another recent study showed that ldquoretirement was

negatively associated with cognitive test scores over timerdquo implying that retirees may have

more difficulty solving problems and understanding complex issues Susann Rohwedder

who coauthored a 2009 study titled ldquoMental Retirementrdquo says retirement drives lowered

cognition due maybe to the common hypothesisldquouse it or lose itrdquo Working even part-time may help forestall

decline of mental facilities But so can mentally stimulating hobbies like bridge learning a new language or

tutoring says Marc Agronin a geriatric psychiatrist and author of How We Age Regular physical activity and frequent

social interactions can also help
