From the Chair

Dear Colleagues,

We had a great 2015!

In case you missed it, we had the Swisslog Logistics and Wallops Island tours, a luncheon at Norfolk State University celebrating Engineers' week, a student financial planning seminar, and technical talks on "An Electrical Forensic Case Study," and "Ultrasonic Sensing." Norfolk State University hosted a very well-attended Student Research Presentation competition, the Photonics Society met and we rounded out the year with the IEEE Year End Banquet at the Newport News Marriott on November 12th.

Kurt Clemente was kind enough to record his presentation, "IEEE Efforts to Establish Representation on the National Electrical Code (NEC) Panels.” You may view his talk on IEEEtv by following this link: https://ieeetv.ieee.org/educational_activities/ieee-hampton-roads-presentation-ieee-s-role-in-developing-the-national-electrical-code Where possible, we will record presentations and post to IEEEtv.

As you are aware, Region 3 and the IEEE Hampton Roads Section (in cooperation with Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University and Christopher Newport University) will be hosting IEEE SoutheastCon 2016, March 30 through April 3 at the Marriott Norfolk Waterside Hotel. We need local members on the ground to support those tasks.

(3) Attended the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) Engineer of the Year Banquet (February 27th).

We have not set dates for our next two networking events, but they will be after SEC2016. One is a sponsored technical dinner and the other is a tour.0 However, I think it would be great to support the upcoming event hosted by the local chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). They will host the "Lighting Hampton Roads" conference on March 16, 2016 at the Chesapeake Conference Center from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm EST. This is the premier regional lighting conference to connect you to manufacturers, vendors and the latest in industry education. Check out our event page for more information:http://tidewateries.org/Hampton_Roads_Lighting_Conference

The Open Channel – March 2016 3

On behalf of the IEEE Region 3 South East Conference (SoutheastCon 2016), and the

many talented and dedicated volunteers and staff who have contributed their time and effort,

we welcome you to Norfolk. We have constructed a superb technical program as discussed in

the welcoming remarks by our Technical Program Chair:

We look forward to an exciting IEEE SoutheastCon 2016 and hope that our innovations will

enhance your technology experience. We also hope that you will be able to find time before or

after the conference to enjoy the many exciting experiences that Norfolk has to offer.

SoutheastCon is the annual IEEE Region 3 Technical, Professional, and Student Conference. It

brings together Computer Scientists, Electrical, and Computer Engineering professionals,

faculty and students to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials, and

exhibits. It is the most influential conference in Region 3 for promoting awareness of the

technical contributions made by our profession to the advancement of engineering science and

to the community. As usual, attendance and technical program participation from areas outside

IEEE Region 3 are encouraged and welcomed.

Norfolk dates its beginnings to 1636, formally incorporated as a city in 1736. Today, Norfolk is

a major naval and shipping hub, as well as the center of the Hampton Roads region. Nor-fok, or

Naw-fok, no matter how you pronounce it, the experience will always be the same: fun, vibrant

entertainment and culture, delicious cuisine and 144 miles of shoreline waiting to be explored!

With the Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic ocean and countless rivers in our backyard, you are never

far from the water.

Reasons to Attend:

Peer reviewed technical program with interesting papers presented

Student competitions: Robotics hardware, software, ethics, paper, and tee shirt

Exhibitors, including recruiting booths for major employers

Region 3 annual meeting

Members of the Region 3 Committee have a registration rate of $285. Section chairs and their

representatives should register at this rate.

All registration rates will reset to higher rates on March 1, 2016.

Marriott Hotel registration should be done as soon as possible. Early rates start at $135 per

night for the rooms with one and two attendees. Other rates apply for the third and fourth

attendees.

The Technical Program and student hardware practice begins at 8am Friday, April 1. The

Technical Program ends at 5pm Saturday, April 2. All other meetings will continue until noon

Sunday, April 3.

All registered students, paper presenters, and Region Committee members are invited to the

Awards Banquet Saturday evening.
