What We Have Looked At
The Importance of Considering our Ways
The Role of Pride, Parenting and Technology in Busyness
The Importance of Regular Periods of Rest
Naming and Sticking to our Priorities
Big Question
How can we see lasting change from this series?
If there was one thing that I commend to you about what you should do from this point onwards, where would I direct you?
Luke 10 Jesus sends out seventy two
followers to engage in God’s mission on earth.
Jesus shares the parable of the Good Samaritan, which is about what it looks like a neighbour to those around us.
Clean the House
Mary
Mary chooses to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen.
This position was typically reserved for men, whilst women would perform the domestic duties.
Good House Wife’s Guide -1955
‘Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before
your husband arrives. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper etc. and then run a dust cloth over
the table’
Good House Wife’s Guide -1955
You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the
moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first –remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
Luke 10:40
But Martha was distracted by allthe preparations that had to bemade. She came to him andasked, “Lord, don’t you care thatmy sister has left me to do thework by myself? Tell her to helpme!”
Luke 10:41-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lordanswered, “you are worried andupset about many things, but fewthings are needed—or indeedonly one. Mary has chosen whatis better, and it will not be takenaway from her.”
Martha’s True Concern
In Martha’s request, she refers to herself three times.
“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Joel Green
Though Martha refers to Jesus as Lord, she is concerned to engage his assistance in her
plans, not to learn from his.
Relevant Words for Today
Martha, Martha, you are worriedand distracted bymany things.
Relevant Words for Today
Martha, Martha, you are worried anddistracted by manythings.
Luke 10:41 (Message)
‘You are fussing far too much and getting
yourself worked up over nothing’
What Jesus is Saying…
‘Martha, your busyness is not bad. You want to be hospitable
and have welcomed me into your home. But you are anxious
about your things, concerned about your plan and because of that, you have missed the one
thing that matters.
The One Thing
Mary is enthralled, transfixed and engrossed with
Jesus and hearing his Word.
What Does That Look Like
Devote yourself to Scripture reading.
Devote yourself to prayer.
Devote yourself to public and private worship.
The Implications
You may go to bed earlier.
You may determine not to get distracted by Facebook and Instagram.
You may not drink coffee just before bed.
You may not just have TV on in the background.
You not watch that next episode in your Netflix binge.
Devoting yourself to
Christ may help you not be so
distracted.
Galatians 5:22-23
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these
things!
The Big Question
Why wouldn’t you want to submit
your life to the plan and agenda of
Christ?
Kevin DeYoung
We won’t say no to more craziness until we can say to
more Jesus. We will keep choosing dinner rolls over the
bread of life. We will choose the fanfare of the world over the feet of Jesus. We will choose
busyness over blessing.
Kevin DeYoungIt’s not wrong to be tired. It’s notwrong to feel overwhelmed. It is notwrong to go through seasons ofcomplete chaos. What is wrong –and heartbreakingly foolish andwonderfully avoidable – is to live alife with more craziness than wewant because we have less Jesusthan we need.
