With a richly rendered celestial chart on the cover and mind-bending cityscape on theback, our May SHOWCASE covers a lot of territory. We explore the Chesapeake

Bay area in several maps, witness the surrender of Cornwallis, visit some cats, experience thefour seasons, pause for a chess match, and then enter the 20th and 21st centuries.

Featured in the gallery through July 13th is a show of works by Clare Romano and JohnRoss. Painter, printmaker, educator and author, Clare Romano, was born in Palisades, NewJersey, in 1922. She studied painting at Cooper Union. Known for her stunning woodcuts,she became highly regarded in the graphics world for producing collagraphs. A notededucator, she taught generations of artists printmaking at the New School, Pratt GraphicsCenter and Pratt Institute. She co-authored , which is still in useto teach the history and process of printmaking. Throughout her career she has receivednumerous awards and has had many one-artist shows. Her work is in many museums acrossthe U.S. and Europe. John Ross is a painter, printmaker, book artist and Professor of Art.He has served as President of the Society of American Graphic Artists, and is active in anumber of art organizations. He studied at Cooper Union, Parson School of Design, Ecoledes Beaux Arts, France, New School for Social Research, Columbia University and IstitutoStatale d’Arte in Italy. For over fifty years, he taught printmaking at the New School and hasbeen a professor of art at Manhattanville College. He authored several reference booksincluding . Achieving over sixty one-artist shows, Ross is repre-sented in museum collections including the Hirshhorn Collection, Metropolitan Museumof Art, Library of Congress, Dallas Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and PhiladelphiaPublic Library.

JohnSmith's landmark 1612 map of Vir-ginia, based upon the Hondius-Blaeu versions. It depicts the entireChesapeake Bay area, including itsmajor tributaries. The Montanusmap is identical to the Ogilby mapof the same year. Both are re-nowned for the cartouche depictinga Brazilian Indian with a llama, goatand unicorn. Image size 11 3/8 x 13

5. NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA. Henricus Hondius. Hand-colored copper plate engrav-ing, 1630. One of the great maps of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay region. This map, inthe Jodocus Hondius version, (1618) was the first derivative of the highly important JohnSmith Map of Virginia of 1612 which was first to depict the bay and its tributaries with anyaccuracy. Jodocus Hondius first issued the map in 1618 but only small handful was printed.In 1629 Jodocus died and his widow, unbeknownst to his brother Henricus, sold the copperplate to firm of Willem Blaeu. Henricus had to re-engrave an entirely new plate which wasissued in 1630. In the upper left corner is an image the great Indian chief Powhatansurrounded by his subjects. In the upper right is the British Royal Arms, below that is animage of an Indian warrior armed with a bow and war club. Image size 15 x 19 3/8" (382 x492 mm) plus margins. Good condition. Warr, Philadelphia.A scarce, large scale sea chart of theChesapeake and Delaware Rivers bythe noted Baltimore publisher,Fielding Lucas, one of America'sfirst great map makers. This is alsothe only chart published by him.The chart shows inland navigationon the rivers as far north as Philadel-phia and as far south as Suffolk,Virginia. The Maryland HistoricalSociety notes "The chart includessoundings, the location of shoals,light boats, and light houses, withshort descriptions of the lights car-ried by the different boats. Twonoteworthy features are the 'TideTables' for the Chesapeake and Del-aware Bays and the series of views ofCape Henry, Smiths Point Light

8 AMERICA SIVE INDIA NOVA. Michael Mercator. Published by Rumold Mercator,Duisburg. Copper plate engraving, 1595 c.1633. This map is one of the most striking earlymaps of the Western Hemisphere. Michael Mercator, grandson of Gerard, engraved thisplate, the only known printed map by him. Cartographically, this map was based onMercator's landmark world map of 1587. This map is set within a circle surrounded by adesign of interlocking acanthus leaves, cornucopias and insects. There are three inset maps,the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Florida, and Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Also depicted area Northwest Passage, a large island of New Guinea and a huge Antarctic continent.
