"I suppose what I am really working toward is a four-dimensional articulation—where imagesjuggle with the time continuum as part of the enigma. Narrative is only incidental to my imag-ery, which I recognize more and more often comes looking for me when I am out looking forsomething else. The generation of a coherent thematic structure very often begins with a series ofsheer coincidences. Though my prints may appear carefully thought out and controlled, they arein fact also examples of a sort of esthetic chaos theory—the seemingly orderly organization of actu-ally random elements. I share in the contemporary fascination with randomness—and in an al-most mystical feeling that the very lack of pattern is a pattern in itself."

FeatheredArtists have been forever fascinated by birds andtheir ability to gracefully navigate the open skieson stretched wings, suspended between earth, sky, and water, hopping from perch to perch.

showcases the work of threenoted natural history and ornithological print-makers from the 20th century – Frank W. Ben-son, H. Emerson Tuttle, and Stow Wengenroth. Each artist offers a unique, distinctive approachto depicting birds in their prints, which makesfor a varied and compelling grouping on thewall.

The prints of Frank W. Benson (1862-1951),nicknamed the father of sporting art, suggest theperspective of a naturalist and bird hunter. Hisclose and watchful examination of a bird’s flightpath and tendencies in the water offer a firsthandrecord of nature, gleaned not from dead modelsin a studio, but from a close familiarity of birdsin the wild. Captured in Benson’s spare composi-tions and delicate line work, their vital essence isexpressed in the way the birds move throughtheir environment- sunlight and shadows hittingtheir winged bodies in flight, ripples in water asducks float through still marshes, traces of awhole flock of birds dotting the horizon.

H. Emerson Tuttle (1890-1946), devoted much of his career to drawing and etching printsof birds, both from life and by using stuffed specimens in his studio. Arresting and com-manding, his prints take on the appearance of formal seated portraits. Intricate detail isgiven to the patterns of feathers, the cock of the head, and oftentimes, the direct gaze of thebird. Tuttle’s prints are unswerving and full of personality- his birds take center stage andare only sometimes supported by a background. Tuttle captures their beauty and dynamismwith his drypoint needle, imbuing his birds with almost human-like dispositions.
