The long warm humid summer days that we wished for in January are here. With long days come the welcome time on the water, racing, and cruising. Celebrations come in many sizes, reasons, and styles. Upcoming Cruises & Events

Please check the calendar on the first page for information on July and August events. There are many activities to keep you occupied on the water this summer. Those known as of press time for July and August are shown on page one, and some may even be elaborated on below. When it is necessary for the hosts to know you are coming, or if you think the host might like to know you plan to attend, please give a timely response via the means listed on the first page. Remember the 7 Ps: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Particularly* Poor Performance. Improve the odds of a great event with your timely RSVP. Thank You! The hosts, hostesses, and cruise leaders for MRSA events greatly appreciate your EARLY RSVP for these events. Early RSVPs allows correct amounts of munchies, preparations, and un-pulled hair to greet everyone as they arrive. Special Junior Sailor Cruising to Eagle Cove – Saturday July 18 Join MRSA sailors for a DOG DAY AFTERNOON CRUISE TO EAGLE COVE on July 18th. This cruise is a special one. It is planned for families with kids or grandkids and especially for our junior training kids who have just finished camp, and who would like to practice their sailing skills on some bigger boats. We have some MRSA cruisers and racers who would like to invite Junior Training families without sailboats to come aboard and cruise with them. We plan to leave the appointed docks at about 1:00 and plan to rendezvous in Eagle Cove for our swim and hot dogs no later than 4:00. After everyone has enjoyed a short Magothy cruise, and headed back into Eagle Cove to raft up, there will be hot dogs and sodas aboard Options and the other rafted boats. Everyone will learn the joys of cruising and rafting up. (Hot dogs will be grilled aboard Ravenous.) After some swimming and splashing and plenty of hot dogs and snacks, the afternoon cruise will be complete. All sailors will have had a chance to practice their new skills on some larger boats, that is, if Mother Nature provides the wind. Call Larry Ricci at 410-804-4290 (or 301-490-4007 x125 during the day) or email at [email protected] if you would like to cruise. We need to know if your family would like to cruise aboard Options or with one of our other MRSA boats.

Corsica River Race and Cruise – July 25-26 By Joe Jackins This is a cruise you will not want to miss. MRSA teams up with the Corsica River Yacht Club to host a race to and from the Corsica River the weekend of July 25th and 26th. The benefit to us cruisers is the fact that the Corsica River Yacht Club throws a great party after the race and we are invited. The party is held on shore on Spaniard Point and it features the very popular traditional Eastern Shore Style ½ bbq chicken w/locally grown silver queen white corn on the cob - homemade potato salad – cole slaw – tomato and cucumber salad – fresh fruit – homemade cookies – brownies (yum). Drinks include sweet tea – old fashioned lemonade – two flavors on the frozen drink machine and three types of ice cold draft beer. The cost of this lavish party is just $15.00 in advance or $18.00 at the door/beach, which also includes tender service and entertainment. It is best to anchor on the up river side of Spaniard Point. Please contact Joe and Diane Jackins at [email protected] or 410-544-3657 to make advance dinner reservations not later than July 20. Checks must be mailed to CRYC, P.O. Box 24, Centreville, MD 21617 no later than July 20, 2009 in order to get the advance payment discount. If you would like us to organize an informal race from Baltimore Light to the Corsica River please email us as soon as possible. The race would start at 10:00 AM off Baltimore Light. Memorial Weekend Cruise to the Wye River – 2009 By Rich Hughes (Photos appeared in last month’s Old Man.) Jimmy Buffet was invited to join The Eastport Yacht Club, Chesapeake Bay Bristol Club, and MRSA for this cruise. I am sorry to report he was unable to join us. He missed an excellent cruise with fine weather, food, and games on Wye Island. The activities included: Best Equipped Boat Contest, “Green” Dingy Races, “Olympic Games” and a terrific chicken dinner. The weather was outstanding or should I say “Fantastic.” Steady breezes Saturday and Sunday. Monday not much wind to push us home. The 35th Anniversaries of both The Bristol Club and MRSA were recognized during the Sunday evening’s award ceremony. The following members and guests enjoyed the weekend activities: Betzs aboard Dulcinea; Lunds and Honey aboard Min Van IV; Mullarkys brought 2 boats with family and friends on Eighth Deadly Sin and Betelgeux; Poes were aided by the Polk crew aboard Ravenous; Padens aboard Petite Cherie; Poulsons were joined by the McCutchens crew aboard Blue Moon; Bonhams aboard Frequent Flyer; Kammann (fabulous anchor boat for the cocktail hour) aboard Renaissance; McNairs (one new college graduate and friend) aboard Merlin; Dorfs aboard Light Spray; Hughes were joined on board Fantastic by George and Carolyn Stamps. Those arriving by land included Toni’s mother Marjorie Jean Prince from Lincoln, Nebraska; Katie and family; Matt and family; and two midshipmen. Lewis Neisner traveled from Rochester, New York for the company, games, and dinner. Soggy MRSA 35th Anniversary June Picnic – at the Poes’ By Peggy Poe The day was rainy and dreary. Let’s face it. It was a miserable day even for ducks – another of those days we have been having this spring. It wasn’t a very nice day for the annual MRSA June picnic. But the show must go on, so the strawberries and ice cream were purchased, and the wine and beer were put on ice. The grills were cleaned, the propane tanks were filled up, and

the grass was cut. We had high hopes that the rain would stop, and the sun would come out. NO SUCH LUCK! But this is a sailing club. After all, sailing is a water sport! And these partygoers are sailors. Neither rain, nor storm, nor threat of thunder and lightening will keep these partiers from their appointed picnic. And so, 71 (SEVENTY-ONE!!) intrepid MRSA members attended the picnic at the Poes’ home in Pasadena. It didn’t really pour down rain during the party, but the sun never peaked out – not even a little bit. In fact we had such a great time, no one remembered to take a photograph. There was actually room in the house or on the porch for everyone to sit down for dinner. There was plenty of delicious food, including ice cream, strawberries, and cake to Celebrate the 35th anniversary of MRSA. **By the way, let it be known that no hardy sailor came to the picnic by water. Did you forget to come? Don’t worry. There’s another picnic in August. [Sincere thanks to our intrepid Poe hosts for a great party on a less than best day. – Ed] Independence Day Cruise – July 3-5 – Grays Inn Creek By The Kirkendalls [and Ed] Special thanks to Sue and Al Kirkendall for hosting a beautiful cruise to Grays Inn Creek on the Chester River over the July 4th weekend. The group enjoyed fireworks at Rock Hall and a community brunch on Saturday. Saturday evening was beautiful for a community potluck. Excellent navigation by all precluded any inadvertent dredging of the entrance channel, and any bottom cleaning was only on purpose – dodging the few pesky nettles that accidentally tried to spoil the delightful weekend.

Parade of Lights – Boat(s) Needed for December 2009 By the Board of Governors MRSA has been very successful in its participation in the Eastport Yacht Club Parade of Lights Boat Parade in Annapolis for several years. We have kept all of the decorations since the last time that we had an entry in the parade on the possibility that the club would have an entry in the future. The BOG would now like to find out if there is sufficient interest from the club to participate in a Parade of Light to make it worthwhile to continue to store all the decorations. The club has made a significant investment in both time and expense to make the items that we have used. However, if there is not sufficient interest from the club to continue participating in the near future, it is not necessary to store the items from past parade. The success that MRSA experienced in the past resulted from the Gardners and Seals leading the efforts. If you would be interested in leading the effort to participate or provide a boat to use in the parade, please express your interest by sending an email to the Commodore Toni Hughes at [email protected].

MRSA Racing Corner for July 2009 – Up To Date MRSA Racing News By Craig Colthorpe, Rear Commodore

As racing events and results occur during the season they will be posted rapidly on the MRSA web site and announced via the “RACERS” E-mail list. If you are a racer and are not on this list, or not sure, please contact Web Master Mike Mullarky at 410-439-1556 or [email protected] to put your E-mail address on the list. Similarly, if you are a Cruiser (or both), contact Mike. MRSA does not distribute these addresses outside of the Club and the only use is in connnection with the Club. You will receive no junk mail, heartfelt stories, chain letters, or jokes from us. (Too bad for you.) Just the good MRSA information you crave.

Junior Sailing Program

By Rich Hughes This year’s outstanding youth sailing camp from June 15th through June 26th is complete. A good group of volunteers helped with the process and the fun – not to mention excitement. The rain was not so exciting. The next Old Man will provide a delightful synopsis of the sailing camp activities on the Magothy. Sincere thanks to everyone who participated in or assisted with the preparation in this year’s camp!!

Magothy Oyster Gardening Program needs volunteers! Modified from a MRA announcement, May 2009 A new "Maryland Grows Oysters" program is being sponsored on the Magothy by the Magothy River Association (MRA). (The MRA is a separate organization from MRSA.) This FREE program is available to all Magothy residents who have access to a pier or waterfront. Program participants will receive wire mesh cages filled with baby oysters (“spat”) to hang from piers or accessible poles or bulkheads. Periodic cleaning is required. Oysters, once grown, will be deposited on a Magothy River oyster reef. Timing of oyster/cage pickup is in the fall of 2009. Contact the program by E-mailing to [email protected]. You may ask questions or provide your contact information for further contact. This is a GREAT way to clean the Magothy River and the Bay. Several MRSA members have participated in similar programs in the past. There

Buss When partaking of the Pirate Adventures at Rock Hall in August, you may want to strap your blunderbuss on your bell-bottoms to enhance your costume and frighten the natives. Three or even four years ago, Harvey Paskin spiced up his fabled Master-of-Ceremonies Joke-Fest at the Commodore’s Ball with a few comments about nautical terms reaching the current vernacular from the far reaches of sailing ships of old. Those were the days of wooden ships and iron men as opposed to more recent times of fiberglass boats and gentle women. One of the terms Harvey did not relate was “blunderbuss.” Some of you may actually think that the word is a term for a kiss that has gone astray - a blunder of sorts. Maybe not. However, a blunderbuss is actually a shot-firing, muzzle-loading firearm with a short, wide barrel flared at the muzzle. The blunderbuss is an early form of shotgun adapted to military and defensive use. Blunderbuss weapons were not popular at sea. The term “blunderbuss” is of Dutch origin. Sailors know how to invite their friends out for dinner and then announce that the meal is Dutch Treat. That’s all I know about the nautical relationship of the word.

Note to Shutterbugs:

When attending MRSA activities, feel free to snap a photo or two and E-mail to your editor for publication in this fine nautical periodical – or to the Webmaster for updates on the MRSA web location. Medium resolution works best. Closeups of people having a good time are especially nice – especially when they are facing the camera in complementary poses. Photos of member children are especially welcome. PLEASE include the names of everyone in the photo if you can. Pictures of boats and boating activities are delightful also.
