New ZNEWS Email Delivery

ZONC will be sending ZNEWs to you by email every month so you no longer have to wait to receive it by mail or log in at www.ZONC.org to get your copy. Your ZONC Board and members voted at the February business meeting to start a transition from sending ZNEWS by regular mail to email. We hope this will make it easier for you to keep up with our events and take part in ZONC activities. We will also be able to say that ZONC is "going green" as most other car clubs have also done. As an added bonus, when the transition to email is complete the club will save money on postage. If receiving your ZNEWS by email is difficult, please contact Membership Representative Ann Devor ([email protected]) and we will work with you. ZONC hopes to have our transition to "ZNEWS sent by email" completed by June. We have already received positive comments from several of you about the transition to email delivery. Many thanks for your support as we try this new approach!

It’s nearly April and that can only mean one thing: baseball.

But if batting and earned run averages aren't your thing, the coming month also marks the true start of the Z event season.

Ann Devor and Paul Gommel, of course, got things started on March 12 with the Contra Costa Delta Cruise, which I wasn't able to make due to a prior engagement but understand was well-attended and enjoyed by all.

Bob Jenkins will keep things going on April 3 with the 52nd Annual April Fools Rallye. I've been told the rallye can test even the strongest of relationships, which is why I plan to take my brother instead of my wife (well, that and because she's very pregnant).

All kidding aside, the April Fools Rallye is a great event that raises money for Canine Companions for Independence, a Santa Rosa -based non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities. Last year's event raised more than $600.

It's worth noting that the rallye isn't a contest of speed but a contest of how well a team can follow instructions along a specific route (hence the warning about it being a relationship test).

For more details, check out the flier on page 3.An overnight run to scenic Fort Bragg will follow on

May 21-22. Look for more details in the coming weeks. There are plenty of other events worth putting on the

calendar, including a ZONC gathering at the Blackhawk Automotive Museum on June 25, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on Aug. 18-21, and the annual ZONC Car ShOW at the Brisbane Marina on Sept. 10.

Also, our next board meeting is April 9 at 11:30 a.m. at Cenario's Pizza, 364 Pittman Road in Fairfield.

Oh, and go, Giants! Thanks for reading. See you on the road soon.

Paul Voskes, Director of Fixed Operations and the Service Dept., warmly greeted us and hosted a beautiful breakfast spread of coffee cake, bread and bagels. Herman Brown and friend Della Miller were first to arrive in their awesome GT-R. Herman kept his eyes on the red Nismo Black Edition GT-R in AutoCom’s showroom. New member Eugene Mitchell

Fort Bragg Tour May 21-22, 2016

A two-day trip to Fort Bragg, CA, will kick-off the summer touring season for ZONC. Ken Clark and his wife, Mary, will host the adventure May 21-22. Meet location is the Petaluma Mall in Petaluma, CA. Sign-in starts at 8:30 am and the ride begins at 9:00 am. They’ll head directly for the coast, joining Highway 1 east of Bodega Bay and then travel north to Fort Bragg.

Here’s the route on Googlemaps.com: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/401+Kenilworth+Drive,+Petaluma,+CA/Bodega+Bay,+CA/Surf+Motel+%26+Gardens,+South+Main+Street,+Fort+Bragg,+CA/@38.4889406,-123.675256,162995m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m20!4m19!1m5!1m1!1s0x8085b3f89938596f:0x7facba8ecf642260!2m2!1d-122.6296388!2d38.2441978!1m5!1m1!1s0x8084274dbab23c5d:0xe4ea395a17784908!2m2!1d-123.0480571!2d38.33325!1m5!1m1!1s0x80804aaf7b64528f:0x4b8c15400af2f77f!2m2!1d-123.807264!2d39.423134!3e0

Overnight AccommodationsKen and Mary’s favorite lodge in Fort Bragg is the “Surf Motel

and Gardens” (www.surfmotelfortbragg.com). It’s located in the center of town, close to dining, attractions and the ocean. Rooms are clean and attractive, the management is friendly and accommodating, and the grounds are beautiful. An added plus – they take dogs and even provide a private, fenced exercise area.

Those who prefer something a little more upscale can check the Mendocino/Fort Braggs accommodations website (www.

Mendocino.com/fortbragg_lodging.html). ZONC member, Ruffin Apperson suggests movie and TV buffs might consider staying in Mendocino at the Hill House Inn (www.hillhouseinn.com). It’s been the shooting location for over 50 movies and the TV show “Murder She Wrote.”

Time to ExploreTwo miles north of the “Surf and Gardens Motel” is Fort

Bragg’s famous “Glass Beach” (www.fortbragg.com/explore/

glass-beach). It lives up to the phrase, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s abundant in “sea glass” created from years of dumped garbage. The ocean’s pounding waves broke down the buried glass and pottery, and tumbled them into small, smooth colored pieces that cover the beach. On the bluff above is the Glass Beach Trail – a newly developed walking, jogging and biking trail along the headlands and an old train trestle.

Less than a mile south are the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (www.gardenbythesea.org). You’ll find 47 acres of

formal gardens, canyons, wetlands and trails that take you right to the coastal bluffs. There are more than 150 species of birds and magnificent collections of dahlias, begonias, camellias, rhododendrons and even a vegetable garden and orchard.

Just 6 miles down Highway 1 sits the Point Cabrillo Light Station (www.pointcabrillo.org). While on the grounds, you can tour the 1st Assistant Lightkeeper’s house, a Marine Science Exhibit in the Blacksmith and Carpenter Shop, and the Lighthouse itself. Sharp-eyed visitors might even spot migrating gray whales, as some females are still moving up the coast with babies in late May.

If you enjoy relaxing along the Pacific Coast, but dislike navigating the summer crowds, ZONC member, Dave Bradley, has a suggestion for you. Dave is associated with the “Newport Ranch” (www.theinnatnewportranch.com) and can “host” guests wanting to relax and stroll on the bluffs far from vacationing crowds. If you wish to make your trip to Fort Bragg extra-special, Dave suggests the ranch’s luxurious inn might be just the place for you. Good Eats

Dave has a couple recommendations for dinner Saturday night: •Purple Rose (Mexican) 24300 Highway 1 •Luna (Italian) 231 N. Franklin St. •Ruffin Apperson's sources suggest: Silver’s at the Warf (fish & Mexican) 32260 N. Harbor Dr. Point Noyo (seafood, steaks, pasta) 1011 S. Main St. •Marci Jenkins recommends the clam chowder at: TW’s Grill & Bar, (seafood) 400 S. Main St.

The Ride HomeFor a change of scenery, the trip home will turn inland. They’ll

take Highway 128 through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park and past the vineyards of Anderson Valley. Then it’s on to Highway 101 and points south.

It will be a memorable weekend. Plan to join Ken and Mary as they travel up the coast to Fort Bragg.

(280Z) from Concord found us there and joined the club but could not come along for the ride. Also meeting us at AutoCom were Chuck Moll from Pleasanton (280Z); Linda Williams from Santa Clara (280Z); Stephen Wong from San Leandro (without his Speed Racer 280ZX) and friend Rita; and Gino Guillen from Lathrop (510) with DatsLoco friends Oscar Lemus in his beautiful 510 and Keogh Jeslon in his Datsun 521 truck.

We took off from Concord to our first stop in Cordelia where we met ZONCers Mike and Nancy Ahern who came all the way from Placerville in their 240Z; Lois and Ruff Apperson from Napa (350Z); Fred and Loretta Brooks from Vallejo (350Z); Marci and Bob Jenkins from Santa Rosa (350Z); and Duane McMullen from Sacramento in his newly purchased 1985 300ZX. From Cordelia we drove through the historic district of Suisun City and then turned off Hwy. 12 to Birds Landing. Along Hwy. 12 our radar detector started beeping madly when we added a 14th driver in his CHP

patrol SUV. When we turned off toward Birds Landing, the radar signal stayed strongly with us and although in the lead car we couldn’t see him, we knew he was coming along for the ride. Finally he gave up and left our group and we drove

with a little more spirit through the windmill farms south of Rio Vista.

After passing through Rio Vista, we headed across the river and turned on Hwy. 160 toward Walnut Grove and its Locke Historic District. After a brief stop in Isleton so everyone could regroup, we passed many Delta resorts and farms and crossed two more bridges before arriving in Locke. Lunch service at Al’s Place for our large group was excellent and the house specialty, pepperoncini and peanut butter, was a new taste treat. Meeting us for lunch and driving south from Sacramento were Nick Fisher, Kevin and June Myose, and Curtis Lewis. And it was a surprise when Ken Clark and Mary Rozmajzl from Vacaville joined us because they drove their 240Z with transmission problems to Locke and brought their ill puppy with them.

After lunch some of us explored the Chinese Museum and quirky shops in Locke. Others of us decided to try to beat the rain and headed home. The rain held off though we could see dark clouds in the distance with rain coming down on Mt. Diablo. By the time we reached Hwy. 4, the storm cell had moved east leaving only a light drizzle falling on our windshield. While a few people heading home on northerly roads had heavier downpours, St. Patrick smiled on the Cruise and we were all very lucky. We enjoyed a wonderful time together with the best people, hardly any rain and no

By Ann DevorThe 50th Anniversary of Brock Racing Enterprises was

celebrated in ultimate car style at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 20. Nine former BRE crewmembers attended the event and shared sometimes hilarious stories about their victories and losses. Gail Brock did an amazing job of gathering the crew together and kept the discussion moving along through various memory lapses and moments of confusion. After a morning car show and the panel discussion, Gail managed to keep all together for a lengthy autograph session that lasted at least two hours past the allotted time.

Peter Brock, car designer and former racecar driver began the panel discussion with the highlights of his career starting at age 19 with a 1957 design for GM styling that looked suspiciously like the first Corvette. After a stint at GM, he went to Japan with the hope of becoming a race car driver and began racing the Hino 900. He applied his knowledge of

BRE 50th Anniversary Reunion at Petersen Museumfunction and design to the development of the Hino Samurai, a prototype racer that was ended when Toyota took over Hino operations. Not finding success with Toyota, Brock went to Nissan and helped develop the manufacturer’s racing 510s and 240s that went on to championships in 1970 and

1971. While using new technology such as dyno to further hone his race cars’ performance, Brock credits the ingenuity and dedication of the people in his organization for the halo of success that shines on BRE to this day.

In addition to Peter Brock, attending the BRE Reunion were John Morton, the race car driver who brought fame to BRE with his championship wins; Mac Tilton, Crew Chief

The BRE Reunion also featured a car show on the upper parking deck prior to the panel discussion. Only pre-1985 Datsuns were qualified for the show and judging was done by the BRE team including Brock. While looking at ZONCer Ken Clark’s car, Brock was heard to say that he was surprised and the fine quality of 240Zs at the show. He was also surprised to see the large number of four door 510s, many of them showing performance upgrades beneath the hood. The Best of Show car was a beautiful replica of the BRE #46 240Z that had traveled from Atlanta to be at the show. Other cars came from Nevada, Arizona and Oregon. Northern California was well represented by Ken Clark and his 240Z, Wade Warren, Rob Fuller, Paul Gommel, Rod Eaton, Nick Fisher and Eric Lindrud on a beautiful day with good times for all.
