Saving a Barrel Lee, fine job on the magazine and congrats for making the World Team. I got a barrel that seems to be shooting very well. I wonder if you have some time to review targets. I probably want to take it off action and save for SS or Nationals.

M.N.Eastern Region

Thank you. I’m not that good at reading targets (i.e., bullet holes). I’m of the belief if the individual holes look small and perfectly round, then the gun is in tune. A good barrel in my mind is one that shoots a mid-2 when you know that a flag turned on you and it should have thrown the bullet out to give you a small-3. Another aspect of a good barrel is that it cleans well, i.e., it doesn’t show a lot of copper or carbon. Lastly, if you take the barrel off, don’t forget to save the powder and bullets too. It’s the combination that makes it work!

Boone Valley IkesMatch Report Received on 9/17/19

September 7-8,2019HTR/VFS

The weather held out and condi-tions were tricky. As each day went on like always some can figure it out and some remained confused as to what was happening. We had a fair turnout for our last match of the year. I would like to thank everyone who has supported and helped with our matches. This was I and Mary’s last year for running matches its been a great 19 years. Thank You all and keep in touch we have met some great people that we consider friends.

Prairie Dog Shoot and South Dakota State LV

July 6-7, 2019

On July 6th and 7th 12 shoot-ers were present for the Prairie Dog 100-200-300 HV Prairie Dog Shoot on Saturday and for the South Dakota State LV match on Sunday. The weather was pleasant all weekend, with temperatures from the 60s in the mornings to the 80s in the afternoons. Everything is still amazingly green on the prairie in South Dakota. Saturday, we shot the 1-2-3 heavy varmint. Dave Tunbridge won the 100 yard stage with Rod Brown second and Tom Evans third. Small group was a 0.124 by Tom Evans. At 200 yards the old dog Dan Dowling was the winner with Terry Hettich second and Tom Evans third. Small group at 200 yards was a 0.305 by Rod Brown. But we had not yet had enough fun, so we set flags for 300 yards. Terry Hettich slipped past Rod Brown for first place with Bill Pond in third. Small group was 0.481 by Rod Brown. Winner of the 1-2-3 HV ag-gregate and the Prairie Dog Trophy was Terry Hettich. On Sunday morning we started with the LV 200. Rod Brown gave us a shooting lesson shooting 5 of the 6 small groups (including the warmup) to easily win the LV 200. Mel Klasi was a distant second and Tom Evans was third. At 100 yards Rod Brown was again in first place followed by Tom Evans and Terry Hettich. Rod easily won the LV aggregate with Tom Evans second and Dan Dowling third. Rod Brown’s winning aggregate of 0.2685 for the HV 1-2-3 and the LV 1-2 gave him the two gun for the weekend. Terry Hettich was second and Dave Tunbridge third. Don Deckert did the scoring, Dave Tunbridge ran the computer, and a num-ber of us took turns as range officer.

September 14-15, 2019Eastern Region Fall Classic

Twenty-two shooters from the Eastern Region were treated to classic fall conditions in Michigan, as the trees start turning colors and the cool morning air begins each day. Saturday conditions were pleasant, with mild winds and moderate mirage. Lacy Tilley had a good handle on the conditions and a fine tune on his rifle. He easily beat the field with a nice 0.1986 agg in LV 100 yards.

Sunday morning condition changed as a cool front brought spotty rain and clouds. Again, Peter Smith showed us all why he was on Canada Team #1 for the recent World Benchrest Championship in Calgary, shooting a fine 0.2047 agg in HV-200. Peter obviously won the HV Grand with a teen agg of 0.1917.

The day started out about normal for the Tri-Cities 100 yd match with a good stiff westerly wind that was switch-ing from the back of one ear to the other. The scores were good for the top shooters shooting 250 aggs . With a that had not shot in 10 years shooting 249 agg, Good shooting Bob. Well the 200 yard match started out the same for the warmup just add in mi-rage. You need to watch the mirage more than the wind. Before the first target was able to be shot a big dust storm came up so now we wait for it to stop and clear

up so you could se the targets. About a third of the wind flags got blown over even though they were stacked down. The wind steadied out in the mid to high 20’s. And with each match we lost more flags tell there was only four left standing. It was a good thing we had tumble weeds blowing though to show us the wind ve-locity. Need less to say the scores suffered from the wind.Well at 200 yds we only had 6 shooters finish the rest ether got sand in there guns so they wouldn’t work or just quit.

The weather was normal for the dry brown part of the evergreen state start-ing out with mild switching wind and

little mirage and building up to a stronger switching wind and mirage. I always say if you want to shoot in calm conditions you won’t do much shooting in the northwest.

It was a pretty good day for shooting in the brown part of the Evergreen State with 5 to 15 mph breeze switch from Three corners of the compass and a good amount of mirage as it started to warm up which comes early here in the desert in July. Everyone had a good time even the poor suckers that had gun problems and couldn’t finish the match.

Attendance was down for our Au-gust match but the few of us that showed up were met with the usual Tri-Cities con-ditions. A little wind switching around, a good amount of mirage and a few of Glenn’s off-color jokes that we all en-joyed. We don’t call him triple x because he shoots x’s although he does get plenty of them. Don’t think about it too long, if

September 7-8, 2019The Buffalo Classic

The Buffalo Classic in Midland Texas turned out to be a very good test for the twenty-eight shooters that were in attendance. Both days, from the very first commence fire, the wind was definitely making its presence known. Saturday’s conditions were a bit better it turned out than it was on Sunday. Sunday the shoot-ers were facing very gusty winds from the South at 10-20 MPH, the winds were continuously shifting back and forth from ten o’clock to two o’clock. Very seldom would you find all of your flags or probes pointing in the same direction! Believe me, it was from start to finish a hunt and pick weekend for all. The wind and mirage was so bad on Sunday afternoon that in the LV200, only one shooter out of the twenty-six, didn’t have a single one-inch group! The aggs definitely tell the story. In LV100, Gary Bristow started off with a .168 in the first match. Larry Baggett led after the second, Charles Huckeba had the small group of the yardage with his .131. John Horn shot a

.161 to take the lead after three matches and continued to lead after the fourth, Joe Kubon shot a .205 for the small group in match four. Charles again got a small group with a .161 but it only got him into second place. The yardage was won by Mike Bryant with a .2482 agg. Charles agg was .2492 and third place went to John Horn with a .2568. HV100 was up next after a lunch break. Kelly Morman started off the afternoon with a .241 group. Darryl Whit-man shot a .165 in the second match but it was Joe Kubon who was in the lead at this point. Larry Baggett shot a .147 in the third match and now it was Steve Murphy taking over the lead. Mike Bryant shot the small group of the yardage with a tiny .100 group to get himself into third place after four. Britt Robinson shot a .163 group in the last match of the day but Steve Murphy kept himself out of trouble and won the yardage with a .2464 agg. Larry Baggett was in second, .2654 and Kevin Black was third with his .2996 agg .After the one hundred yardages were in the books, it was Mike Bryant leading going into the next day with a .2776 agg.

Larry Baggett was in second place with a .2815 and Steve Murphy third with his .2945. Sunday morning, the target frames were back to 200 yards and we started off with Heavy Varmint. Mike Conry’s small group of .290 put him at the top, Mike Bryant took the lead after match two with a .297. Steve Murphy sneaked in a .181 group somehow in the wicked winds, but it was Mike Bryant still hang-ing in there at the top of the leader board. It was right about then when the wind conditions started to get really tough, we knew that, going forward, the small groups would be a tad bit larger than what was already posted. Rusty Morman shot a .418 for the smallest group in the fourth match and Steve Murphy moved into the lead. In the fifth match, Gary Bristow shot a .423 for the small group of the last match but it was going to be John Horn as the winner of the HV200 with a .2624 agg. Mike Bry-ant was second, .2837 and Steve Murphy was third with .2876. The final yardage was the LV200 and once again it was Mike Conry open-

ing up with the smallest group of .340 to lead. Charles Huckeba shot a .460 in the second but Mike continued to hold onto the lead. John Horn shot a .596 in the third and now it was the other Mike, Mike Bryant as the new leader. Mike Conry’s .422 in the fourth moved him back in the top spot going into the final match of the weekend. Ken Terrell shot a .443 group but no one else was able to pull anything out in the windy condi-tions to unseat Mike Conry for the lead. Mike’s agg was .3014, Mike Bryant was second with a .3347 and Charles Hucke-ba was third with his .3577 agg. The 2019 Buffalo Classic winner was, to no one’s surprise, Mike Bry-ant with a .2934 continuing his string of good shooting this year. Charles Huckeba was second with a .3189, Larry Baggett third with a .3256, Mike Conry was in fourth place, .3367 and John Horn rounded out the top five with his

.3376. Once again the Midland target crew’s performance was exceptional and really helped the matches speed along without one single problem. John Krenik once again called the matches for us and did his usual excellent job. I would like to give a special thanks to all of these folks work-ing behind the scenes to pull off a great weekend of shooting. Thanks to the shooters who at-tended, it was a lot of fun competing with you guys. All of us from Midland enjoy your company and appreciate you coming down to shoot with us. We look forward to seeing all of you next year and have plans to look into sacrificing Gary Bristow’s pet rat, yes the one he houses in his “She Shed”, in hopes of appeasing the wind gods and hopefully get some better conditions to shoot in next year!

We only had 6 shooters for the club state championship, I think because of the weather it was calling for gust 50-mph. But the morning at 200yds was pretty clam when we got to the 100 yard it started picking with gust at time of 30-mph. A special note, when I doing the scoring. I had make a mistake Keith

Llano Estacado Shooters Assoc. Match Report Received on 10/1/19

September 28 & 29, 2019 2019 Cotton Boll

The 2019 Cotton Boll Shoot was held September 28 & 29, 2019 at the Llano Estacado Shooters Association Range Southwest of Lubbock, Texas. We had 27 shooters competing both days. Thursday and Friday were both relatively nice days for practice with temperatures in the low 90’s and steady southerly winds around 10 mph. Early Saturday morning a line of thunder-storms came in and dumped about an inch of much needed rain in the area. Now to most folks an inch of rain is not much but as flat as it is around here, we were walking in some pretty good mud

puddles most of the Day on Saturday. When the storms passed about 8:00 am the winds picked up from the south at 15-25 mph and extremely unstable. Larry Baggett started things off in LV 100 with a .230 and led all the way to the last target when Dawson Black snuck by him with an impressive .141 on his last target. This was Dawson’s first time to win a yardage and he earned this one with a .2214 AGG. Baggett was close behind with a .2290 and third was Charles Huckeba with a .2394. Rusty Morman had the small group with an impressive .136. After lunch we moved the frames to 200 yards and Larry Baggett again jumped out to a big lead with a .277 on his first target. He held on through the second

match and then John Horn decided it was time to show how it’s done with his .271, from that point on John continued to lead the rest of us finishing in first with a .2878 AGG in some really nasty conditions. Larry Baggett was second with a .3013, and Durward Wofford was third with a .3170. When the scores were tallied at the end of the day, Larry Baggett won the LV Grand with a .2652, John Horn was second with a 2781, and Charles Huckeba was a close third with a .2782. Sunday morning, we started off with the HV 200, and almost identical winds as we had on Saturday. Once again Larry Baggett had to show us how it’s done by starting off with a .290 which would end up being the small group for the yardage. Larry never let up the entire 200 and won with an impressive .2154 AGG. Mike Bryant was second with a .2524, and John Horn was third with a .2877. These were the only three shooters who managed to AGG in the two’s during this match. After a quick lunch break, we moved the frames back to 100 yards and the HV 100 began. Joe Boudreaux started things off with a nice .174, Scott Hunter came back strong on the second target with a .166, it was a hard fought battle coming down to the last target before we knew who the 100 yard winner would be. In the end it was our very own Steve Murphy who came

We appreciate everyone who attended and look forward to next year.

Thanks also to the target crew Kyle Lienemann and Tyler Lienemann.

We had a 1000 yard benchrest shoot on September 22, 2019. Eleven participants and fairly good shooting

conditions. I heard some shooters talk about very little mirage however as usual the wind was coming up as the second relay got to the benches. Still had some good groups and scores.

Ready on the Firing Line...“Ready on the Firing Line...” is a monthly feature of the magazine, where questions on all aspects of precision shooting are answered by Benchrest Hall of Fame members and/or seasoned benchrest shooters.

(Continued on page 30)

This Month’s first question:Do you weigh each powder load or just throw them? If you do weigh them, what scale and/or dispenser are you using (manufacturer and model)?

Peter Smith I still throw my powder charges. However, I can see the wisdom in weigh-ing. I may well switch if I keep getting beat by shooters weighing powder.

Joel Nader I generally throw powder with a

Harrell’s measure while working up a load or during a two relay Benchrest match. If I have more time in a three or four relay match I will use my RCBS chargemaster.

Jack Neary I use a Chargmaster and weigh ev-ery charge. I shoot in the upper node of N133 powder from 29.7 to 30.2 grains. Unless you have a barrel that has a very wide tuning node, It is very important to weigh your charges if your tuning with the hotter powder node as ALL powder measures, regardless of technique, will

not throw better than .3 tenths. You will see spit shots out of your group with a load that you drop that’s a little hotter outside your designated powder charge.

Dave Coots I’ve proved to myself that I can’t throw powder consistently within .2 so I weigh powder, usually on a Gempro 350. Sometimes I use a chargemaster. There have been many records set, matches won, ect throwing charges, but I don’t

Ready on the Firing Line...seem to be able to throw consistent enough to trust doing it.

Editor For my first 19 years of shooting benchrest, I threw my powder charges. Also, in those early years I didn’t neces-sarily shoot very hot loads. When I real-ized that I may get a better tune on my rifle/barrels shooting a little more stiffer loads, I started weighing my charges to give me a level of comfort. I threw charges with my Harrell measures and weighed them on a Competition Elec-tronics battery operated scale or a Frank-ford Arsenal DS-750 portable scale. In April of this year, I started to use the Frankford Arsenal Platinum Series Intel-lidropper Powder Scale and Dispenser. It just seems to me that some powders and loads have a smaller window of

keeping the rifle in tune, and that’s where weighing your loads can have real value.

This Month’s second question:What benchrest match do you look forward to each year, and why? What range(s) in the country do you like the best, and why?

Peter Smith I look forward to every match. I love shooting and I enjoy the people (ya, even Gammon). If I had to pick just one, it would have to be the Super Shoot. It’s a great range, the Kelbly’s are great hosts and many of the best shooters in the world are there so we have a good mea-suring stick for how our own abilities are progressing. I can’t say I have an absolute favou-rite range. Forced to pick one, I would have to say Holton Michigan. It will let you shoot zeroes one day and it will chew you up the next.

Joel Nader I look forward to the Cactus Clas-sic at Ben Avery range in Phoenix. Great desert location. I have always enjoyed the Super Shoot at Kelbly’s in Ohio. Great rural location.

Jack Neary What benchrest match do you look forward to each year, and why?- Tough question..... The Super Shoot is my favorite match of the year. It great to see everyone again each May and I love the range! Kane is right there with Super Shoot. I could leave my rifles at home and still have a great time. It is the party of parties without equal... All of the many Pies...….! Holton is always a great time,as well, and has a great party atmo-sphere and draws lots of top shooters! What range(s) in the country do

you like the best, and why? I really like the range that are laid-out well, where flags are not low and you have some flag tail length to read. I honestly have not yet been to a range I really didn’t like. Holton can be very tough with abrupt, switching wind conditions. I hear of a number of shooters whom may struggle at a range, threatening never to return.. But it takes a little time to learn a range and only going the range once a year because they’re holding the Nationals will only yield more frustration for not embracing the challenges of a range that kicks your butt...

Dave Coots What benchrest match do you look forward to each year, and why? Usually the first match of the year after the long winter!!! By then I’ve forgotten all the bad matches from the preceding year and have newfound enthusiasm……right up until the second shot. What range(s) in the country do you like the best, and why? Ranges that are flat are my favorites. Flat setting is a breeze.Otherwise, I don’t have a prefer-ence. Don’t psych yourself out.

Editor I get the most excited with the first match of the year. Normally, for us in the Eastern Region it’s the April Spring Tune-up Match at WWCCA. The crazy thing about this match, it can be perfect with moderately cool tempetures or as in 2018 it can be down-right freezing. Nev-ertheless it’s great to see all my friends and fellow competitors. I have two favorite ranges, the Benchrest Club of St. Louis and Kelbly Range in Ohio. I won my first 2-Gun in St. Louis at the East-West Show-Me match in 2007, and it’s got to be one of the nations best ranges for benchrest competition. Kelbly’s is also my favorite, just because I seem to shoot well there

The floating design of our neck turner and the universal floating case driver allows the case mouth (bore) to run on the arbor absolutely concentric. Therefore allowing O.D. to be turned concentric with I.D. The tail-stock creates a horizontal inline support for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold. DOES NOT DRIVE OFF THE PRIMER POCKET NO PRIMER POCKET OR CASE DAMAGE. Driver shaft is hexed to use power screw driver or drill. 17cal. Fireball to a .416 Rigby. Also 50cal.
