What is sponsored research?

Sponsored Research - Research conducted by University employees using any University space, facilities, materials, equipment, or property, and which is financed by contract payments, grants, or gifts from any source other than the University's funds. – FSU Office of Research

Why is Sponsored ResearchImportant to FSU’s Mission?

External grant funding is a means to an end, not the end in itself.

The end, of course, is the support of advanced research, training of graduate and undergraduate students AND the creation and dissemination of NEW knowledge and creative products. External funding provides freedom and flexibility to the faculty member. External funding of graduate students frees State dollars for support of additional students and other worthwhile expenditures.

Page 4: The Office of Research CRC Grants Workshop 1 May 2008 W. Ross Ellington, Associate VP for Research & Greenberg Professor of Biological Science

FSU has aspirations to join the ranks of the elite research and doctoral education universities in the nation

The Pathways Initiative is using Association of American Universities membership indicators as benchmarks for assessing progress. External contract & grants awards and expenditures are phase 1 AAU indicators.
