February 2003 LALP-03-022 OSR PROJECT RECOVERY WORK In February, an OSR Project recovery team visited a facility in Texas where they packaged and encapsulated sealed sources that the facility had been storing for the OSR Project. Two 6-inch Pipe Overpack Containers were packaged for shipment to LANLone contained 10 sources (32 Curies), the other 15 sources (28 Curies). The next big recovery operation will involve packaging approximately 732 sources into 130 drums at the same facility. The Off The Off- Site Source Recovery Site Source Recovery The OSR Project staff also hosted Ron Burrows, Foreign Affairs Officer, Office of Senior Coordinator for Nuclear Safety, US Department of State. Mr. Burrows was given a briefing on project operations and a tour of related LANL facilities. Mr. Burrows, who interacts extensively with the International Atomic Energy Agency in its efforts involving sealed source management on an international level, had requested the visit and information as a means of ensuring coordination and sharing of information and knowledge. In addition to briefings by the OSR Project staff, Mr. Burrows toured the hot cell and waste storage/disposal facilities. Any site having unwanted or excess radioactive sealed sources should register on the OSR Project web page at http://osrp.lanl.gov (click the “Online Source Registration” tab).
