Year 11 had to dig out their wellies for their field trip

to work on river processes. Unfortunately, Mrs

Gilman’s wellies leaked and she ended up with very

wet feet! First of all we completed investigations at

Stakebridge Beck in Swanton Abbott before we

visited the River Bure at Coltishall. The weather was

good so we managed to get in a lovely walk as well.

OLIVE CLASS have been learning

about The Great Fire of London. We

had Cromer Fire crew visit us to talk to

us about Fire safety.

We re-enacted the fire on Pudding Lane

STRANDS SIXTH FORM

Trip to see Henry Moore Sculptures at Houghton Hall

We chose the windiest, wettest day of September to go to Houghton Hall to see the house and grounds. This was a special

opportunity to see the huge Henry Moore sculptures and to hear about how the artist worked. Houghton Hall is a

spectacular private house open to the public on

specific days. This month the house has been

opened up just for schools on Tuesdays and we

were lucky to be able to take the whole of 6th Form

to have a look. Students were amazed by the

interiors of the house. They learned about how

Henry Moore was inspired by the stones he found

on Norfolk beaches to make and build his abstract

sculptures.

The biggest statues are part of a visiting exhibition

which closes at the end of this month. They had to

be lifted in by crane. We were also able to walk in

the grounds, see the magical white deer and visit

some of the permanent art pieces such as the

Skyspace by James Turrell, and Richard Long’s Full

Moon Circle.

SCHOOL WEBSITE sidestrandhall.org.uk

Please check our school website regularly. In addition to the

necessary information about our school (such as; Contact

Information, School Policies, Forms, Dinner Menus, Results,

Curriculum Maps, and School Diary), we run an active blog. Pupils

and staff from each Key Stage actively write and post pictures about

exciting events and activities happe

ning around the school.

We have made the best of the fine

weather and spent time outdoors playing

games and bonding. The children have also

explored the forest area; they foraged for

apples to use in their apple crumbles.

Three children have joined the Sign-a-long

Choir and are looking forward to performing

their songs to an audience. Birch Class

have all received a Bunsen Burner license

in Science and are thoroughly enjoying

practical experiments. The children in Birch

Class are working well together and

encouraging one another. What a great

start to the new academic year!

BIRCH CLASS have enjoyed

learning about China and

other countries in South East

Asia. We have located China

on a World Map, written our names in

Mandarin and made origami animals. Our

English work is based around a book called

Ping – a mischievous duck.

A BIG THANK YOU TO

FUNDRAISING AND DONATIONS

We received some fabulous donations towards the Summer fete from local businesses and sup-

porters for which we are very grateful. As well as a myriad of individual items donated by staff, parents and

governors we had the following great raffle prizes:-

The amount raised after expenses was an amazing £2171.

Special thanks must go to Craft Burger who once again gave up

their valuable time to come and cook for us all at the event with

all the food being supplied by them and all the proceeds from

the sales being donated to our school. Also thanks to Bullens

Joinery for wood and Anglian Mowers for supplying pallets

which are turned into a variety of wooden items by our pupils.

We were also very fortunate to receive donations of goods from

Morrisons, Cromer Homebase and Little Theatre to help make

Strandfest and our production of Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory a roaring success.

HUGE THANKS TO OUR PARENTS AND THE WIDER

COMMUNITY WHO SUPPORT SIDESTRAND HALL SCHOOL.

WE ARE ALL VERY, VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE CONTINUED

SUPPORT.

Planning for Christmas Fayre Planning has now started for

our Christmas events. We would like to make some more china

cake stands to sell to raise funds for the charity as they proved

so popular at the Summer Fete. If you have any undamaged

china plates that you no longer want please consider donating

them to us to be recycled into cake stands.

Our support of other charities Leeway Domestic Violence &

Abuse Services was established in 1974. They provide specialist

services to adults, children and young people experiencing

domestic abuse. They support over 10,000 people per year

across Norfolk and Suffolk. Their services include 7 refuges for

women and children, a helpline and they work alongside the

police to provide advice and support for the most at risk

individuals. Further information is available on their

website www.leewaysupport.org. We are pleased to support

Leeway and Strands is the only local drop off point for the

sanitary and toiletry items to be collected for use by Leeway.

Parents are also welcome to send items into school and we will

make sure they get passed on. Items we are collecting are: toiletries for women and children: new only; female hygiene

products: new only; baby nappies and wet wipes: new only.

If you are having a clear out of these things please

consider donating them to Leeway.

Strands Shop, Cromer – HELP needed!

We are still very short of volunteers to work in the Strands Shop. If you feel

you could give some time (however little) to help in the shop please contact

Wendy Forster on the school number for more details and an application

form. All volunteers will be subject to a DBS check and references.

Move to our new Cashless system

Following requests from parents we are now moving towards being a cashless school

which we hope will make things easier for everyone. Parents/carers will have had a text

or email with login details. To start we will be taking payments for dinner money only via

this system with payments for trips and materials coming this way shortly. We will still

take cheque/cash payments but would like as many payments as possible to be done

online. Parents/carers will also chose the food their child eats via this system. Free school

meal children do not have to pay but food choices need to be made online. Any questions

please call the school.

Your help with raising funds

If you buy goods from Amazon please remember

to do this via Smile Amazon and chose Strands

as the charity. That way we receive donation

from the supplier on most purchases. We have

already started to receive payments from

Amazon in regards to this so thankyou to par-

ents who are supporting us in this way – please

tell your family and friends about this too.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

My Clothing Ltd (formally UES) - your school's uniform embroidery service.

Now have a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/myclothingltd which both

school and parents can access to see updates, leave comments and share

queries. We would greatly appreciate it if you could like our page and share

our page onto your own Facebook page, so that parents can view and follow

us.

SECOND HAND UNIFORM

Please send in any school uniform you no longer

require for use as spares for our pupils.

Thank you.

Successful Bid We are delighted to announce that the construction of the Skills Pod next to the Sixth form block is well

under way. This project has been mainly funded by a very generous grant of £18000 from Wooden Spoon for which we

are very grateful.

Donations We are grateful to North Norfolk District Council for donating plants, seedlings and seeds to our School as a

result of households signing up to the NNDC paperless billing service at the Felbrigg Hall Greenbuild event. This simple

thing resulted in a generous delivery to us which will be used by our land-based students.

We have also received a number of free desks and pedestals from MHA Larkin Gowen of Fakenham which means more

school budget can be spent on curriculum resources rather than office furniture. Suffield Park Infant School donated

some pallets to us which will be used in construction to make items to sell at the Christmas Fayre.

THANKS TO ALL IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO GIVE TO SIDESTRAND HALL SCHOOL.

Next projects Creation of an enclosed garden for Thrive – Duke of Edinburgh volunteers will be working hard on this as

well as some governor volunteers – watch this space for more news!

Re-gravelling the area at the back of the school (near the go kart track) will also be taking place.

Trips and pre-ordered lunches

Please be advised that if your child is going on a

trip and they would usually have a pre-ordered

hot lunch, this will be substituted with a packed

lunch of equal value for the trip. Your child’s

teacher will check if they require a vegetarian

option.
