Wide hull fabricated in Korea or China with retracted counterweight. Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) transported to near shore offloading and integration site. Counterweight lowered by sea water ballasting, locked and solid ballasted at site.
Flat Sides Minimize Fabrication Costs.
The Ocean Fortress© FPSO or FPU
March 4, 2014
Ocean Fortress FPSO or FPU 1. The new wide and deep dry docks in Korea and China make it possible to build
very wide floating offshore structures like the new wide round FPSOs. 2. The new heavy lift vessels make it possible to rapidly transport the new wide
round floating offshore structures to sites all around the world. 3. The new wide round FPSOs are stable due to their large diameter and their low
drag coefficient allows them to use conventional spread moorings similar in size, number and costs to conventional tanker based FPSOs.
4. The new round FPSOs do not require a turret or a swivel and as a result does not suffer the space loss and weight penalties of a tanker based turret.
5. The Ocean Fortress FPSO offers additional advantages over the round hull including: low vessel motions and positive stability similar to a spar, minimum wave enhancement - wave run-up, lighter hull design, flat plate construction cost savings, a retractable low drag coefficient counterweight, ballast storage in the counterweight support column, maximum riser protection and riser loads transfer at the counterweight further lowering the system’s VCG, etc.
6. The hull can be sized for desired payload and oil storage. 7. US Patent is available for use by any designer.

Ocean Fortress FPSO
Eni Norge Goliat Sevan FPSO
Spar type design with solid ballast counterweight with minimum vessel motion and positive vessel stability
Significant vessel motions in high seas and no counterweight
Minimum wave enhancement and wave run-up Significant wave enhancement and wave run-up
Low costs flat plate construction Expensive and slow round hull construction
Low global drag coefficient Low global drag coefficient
Light conventional ship hull design & low bending Heavy unconventional hull design with high bending
Support vertical hard pipe risers, no riser vortex induced vibration and riser to riser or mooring leg interference.
No vertical hard pipe riser support. Only flexible riser and steel catenary riser support.
Solid ballast storage in the counterweight support column
Maximum riser protection inside or outside counterweight support column.
Minimizing riser wave loading and riser fatigue through the wave zone.
Riser loads transfer at the counterweight lowers the system’s VCG and reduces counterweight size.

If combined hull and topside VCG and weight are too high for combined transport on HLV, 1 Option is to transport the hull and topside separately and to lift topside modules onto hull
inshore or offshore and subsequently carryout HU&C inshore or offshore. Module lifts as high as 10,000 MT can be accomplished.
