THE BRAZILIANSAMBA HAS ITSIMPACT!!At the end of 2011, there were 139 activeFPSOs across the globe with 94 companiesholding equity stakes in them. In terms oftotal FPSO-based crude oil and natural gasproduction capacity, Petrobras, ExxonMobilCorporation and Total S.A. are thedominant companies in the global market. These companies together contribute about29.2% of the global FPSO-based oil andgas production capacity.

The Brazilian national oil companyPetrobras is the largest market playerglobally, in terms of FPSO-based oil andgas production capacity, with 703.59MMboe of the production capacity. Thetotal equity-weighted FPSO-based crudeoil and natural gas production capacity ofPetroleo Brasileiro S.A. accounts for about13.5% of the total production capacity ofFPSOs globally.

For 2012 to 2015, Brazil has planned thelargest FPSO-based crude oil and natural

gas production capacity expansion amongall the countries.

Therefore, based on current statistics,Brazil, which currently has the largestFPSO-based crude oil and natural gasproduction capacity, is expected to continueto be the market leader in the FPSOindustry in 2015.

FPSO IN ASIAPACIFIC: THE NEWENERGY FRONTIERIn 2001 there were just 120 floatingproduction units operating worldwide.A decade later this figure has increasedto 250 units, according to research byInternational Maritime Associates (IMA),and more are set to come online in the

    coming years.

South-east Asia alone currentlyaccounts for 33 of the projects inthe pipeline, while Brazils vast ultra-deepwater reserves account for 47,providing many opportunities forthis technology - already suited todeepwater exploration - to advance evenfurther.

Jim McCaul, head of IMA, describedthe opportunities for future growthwithin the sector as hugely positive, explaining: Global demand for oilcontinues to grow, the market is againthreatened by MENA supply disruptions, oil prices have pierced $100 andvirtually every major field operator hasannounced plans to increase offshoreE&D expenditures.

Current FPSO ProjectsEvidence from Asia would certainlyseem to back up McCauls point thatinvestment in FPSO is taking place on anincreasingly significant scale.

    Bumi Armada completed its third FPSO,Berhad, earlier this year and it waspromptly sent on assignment in Vietnam.The 22-month project converted aSuezMax tanker into a 55,000 bbls perday FPSO, which has now been put intoaction on the Te Giac Trang field, locatedaround 100km off the coast of Vietnam.Hassan Basma, executive director andchief executive officer of Bumi Armada,said: This FPSO has been specificallydesigned to process difficult crude witha low wax appearance temperature andto withstand, sustain and remain mooredunder 100 year return environmentalconditions including cyclones andtsunamis prevalent offshore Vietnam;

this too in shallow waters of less than43 metres.

Ezra has also recently sent an FPSOto offshore Vietnam to operate onthe Chim Sao oil field, around 350kmoffshore.

    POST-CONGRESS WORKSHOP D

    Thursday, 20th September 2012 | 1500 - 1800

    DEVELOPING A HOLISTICCORROSION MANAGEMENT

FRAMEWORK FOR THE FPSORationale:Corrosion control design and management for a Floating Production Storage andOffloading installations (FPSO) is a challenging endeavour. FPSOs generally operatein quite corrosive conditions. There are significantly increased challenges to design andoperate FPSOs in these corrosive conditions. Environmental factors such as relativelyhigh ambient temperatures, humidity and cargo temperatures are bound to have ahuge influence on the corrosion vulnerability of the vessel. Therefore selecting a costeffective corrosion control design that addresses both the fabrication and operationalaspects is tricky. This workshop will analyse the various forms of corrosion that couldimpact the FPSO and focus on specific strategies to mitigate the same.

Discussion Points:}How to select a cost effective corrosion protection system based on a combination of

corrosion margins, coating systems and cathodic protection

}Devising an operation inspection, maintenance and repair strategies for the selected

corrosion protection system}How should the approach for choice of a corrosion mitigation system vary between

newbuild FPSOs vs. existing vessels (conversions)

Who is this for? This technical briefing is designed for heads of engineering, head of operations, integrity managers, corrosion engineers, naval architects, and stakeholders involvedin the design, construction and conversion phase of FPSO projects striving to extendthe lifetime of an already operational vessel or to ensure the longevity of operation of anewbuild FPSO.

About the Workshop Leader:Mike Surkein has nearly 30 years experience with ExxonMobil as aCorrosion/ Materials Specialist with a background in corrosion control, cathodic protection, coatings and linings, pipe coatings and materialselection among other skills. Mike is currently the Senior Corrosion andMaterials Consultant for ExxonMobil Development Company and actsas an advisor across all ExxonMobil Upstream Companies. He addresses

technical / business issues critical to materials /corrosion and influencestechnology development within the materials and corrosion discipline.

With extensive experience in the field of mooring systems, Cedric is theperfect workshop leader as he dovetails exceedingly well with this topic.
