Halloween is fun. Granted, the holiday can get out of
control and I know that there is a fine line between
having fun and allowing all sorts of evil thoughts into
one’s mind. Moreover, the roots of Halloween are not
something I like. But, to see my kids dress up like
Minions or Power Rangers gives a sense of freedom.
They pretend that they are something else for one
moment.
It is something that children, teenagers, and adults do
throughout our lives. We have a few opportunities to
reinvent ourselves for better or worse. But it is
something that Paul stresses we must do throughout
the book of Romans. We cannot be content to
continue to do what we’ve always done, but we must
become more like Christ and less like “Adam”. The
beginning of Romans 12 in verse 2 Paul writes
beautifully: “Do not conform to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what
God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Paul isn’t asking us to dress up like something from
the latest movie or act like something we aren’t; he
wants us to be TRANSFORMED entirely into
something else. The only way to be renewed is to
offer ourselves as sacrifices to Jesus...to let Jesus’
words, life, and the Holy Spirit invade us and
transform us into what may seem like a foreign
costume.
Rarely does this happen overnight. I stress this to
new believers that if you could see yourself 3 or 30
years from now you will see what this verse actually means. But through time and being
committed to God’s transforming power in the Holy Spirit we can see that God literally will turn
us in to something entirely different. This is where the parallel to Halloween comes in: The
costume that seems to be a fake is now permanent.
Neither of my children would actually want to become what they dressed up as on most days.

They would like to keep their identities as children who go to school and have their lives. Yet there are times that they do want to be superheroes. They do yearn to be a celebrity. A singer. A quarterback. Any number of “costumes” that the world says are successful.
Do you live a life where someone would look at your faith and they would think, “I want—that. Whatever they have…the way they view the world, I want to become that”.
While there are times in Scripture where there is a miraculous conversion and voices from heaven, the most often way that someone comes into contact and decides to give their life over to Christ is because of the desire to be transformed into something else. Consider how your costume looks: is it off some moments? Is it worn, tattered, or vibrant and well cared?
The day after Halloween is All Saints Day. A day in which we remember the “Saints” that have gone before us, but also give proper acknowledgment of those Christians who “wore” the identity with conviction, character, and calling. As I preached last Sunday, I hope your legacy is to reflect the calling in which we have all been asked. Moreover, I hope your identity is wrapped up in the one who saved you and is broadcast to all who come near.
Blessings,
Pastor Scott
I’m excited for the next sermon series called “Cross-
eyed—Living in the world but not for the world. This will
end on our “Consecration Sunday” on November 19th.
We will delve into three different passages on how to
apply what Scripture says and compare to what the
world says. I’m excited to learn together these next
three weeks.

will for you in Christ Jesus.” -1 Thessalonians 5:18.
Our new series “Say Thank You” begins: November 1st and ends November 15th. It’s not too late to
sign your child(ren), grandkids, or neighbor kids up today! We welcome preschool through fifth grade!
November 1st : Thank you for Friends – Showing friends your appreciation through words and
actions.
November 8th: Thank you for Family – Thanking your parents and siblings for all that they do for
you.
November 15th: Thank you God! – Take time each and every day to thank God for his many good
blessings!!!
I would like to have a picture of my face during the 9am service when Scott Morgan and Marlys Freese interrupted the service to present Godly words of encouragement in October. Then I got to see my face through my wife during the 10:30 service when they called her up as well! We were absolutely shocked in the best way possible. So many amazing notes, and a wonderful blessing, we are very grateful for your generosity! We are privileged as a family and I am privileged to be pastor at Hope Community Church. What a joy to be present at “such a time as this” and I believe that God has brought us here for so many amazing moments. I want to sincerely thank you for your gifts, words, and presence in our lives. We are grateful and feel very loved.
Thank you Scott and Carissa Martin

Many thanks to Brooks and Angie Rushman for their amazing work with the “art of
marriage” weekend on October 20th and 21st. We had over 25 couples attend an
inspiring and wonderful weekend where we were able to invest in our marriages. They
are tremendous leaders and gave so much for this amazing event! Hope is grateful for
their leadership and wisdom in pouring into our marriages!
This idea literally came to me while eating
cake. Dessert, coupled with theology is an
excellent pairing. We will also have coffee
and water available that evening. Come
discuss theology with other people in an
interactive, fun, and faith-stretching night!
Discussion and dessert starts at
6:30pm. Cup of Hope coffee will be
available!
There is no childcare available but the
Hope playground is open and connect with
Scott if interested in using some of the
space for a babysitter at church.
We will be discussing the Reformation and why it’s important to Hope this Thursday!

I’m excited to invest in a Director of Discipleship and have begun interviewing potential
candidates. I wanted to include in this Anchor who we are looking for and to inform the
congregation that candidates potentially could be visiting Hope in the coming weeks!
We have had an enormous amount of applicants which have kept me very busy over the past
3 weeks. We are still accepting applications. At this point, we have had over 60 applications
from a wide array of backgrounds from all over the globe and Phd’s to recent grads from local
colleges! As we narrow down potential fits, please be in prayer for the Lord’s direction. We
want to move quickly but wisely. Many thanks to Julie Wondercheck and Breanna Peterson
for their great leadership in the interim!

Director of Discipleship Scott Martin
Hope Community Church exists to bring people into a closer relationship with Jesus.
Position:
The Director of Discipleship’s role is to holistically analyze our discipleship paths to see where individuals and groups are in bringing people into a closer relationship with Jesus. They must be a dynamic leader who is passionate about discipleship. Based on experience and education consideration for title will occur. Either way, this person must have:
Character: Know what the right thing to do Biblically in a given situation
Charisma: Bring energy and enthusiasm to Hope and be a passionate follower of Jesus Christ
Competency: Have experience in leading individuals, discipleship groups (3-4 people) and large groups (30-40). They must have an idea of curriculum and curriculum development.
Chemistry: This person must get along with people from all age ranges, specifically children and youth. In terms of Gallup Strengths, they need a dash of “Woo” to be successful. They must have a sense of humor, and potentially be making fun of a job listing with so many C words in the requirements.
Calling: This trumps all other C’s as this person needs to be in their relationship with God knowing that God is calling them to such a position as this.
This person must have an ability to multi-task, dream big, and enjoy coming to work. They would be working Sundays with various discipleship opportunities at church. They would be encouraged to choose a service to worship in as possible (currently Hope has two Sunday services). In walking alongside this person if preaching is an option that they would like to pursue, limited opportunities could present in year 2 of this position. However, the focus is on discipleship.

Hope has again shown it’s generosity by blessing numerous children of Haiti with Christmas
gifts in the month of November! We are supporting 30 children by giving various school and
other items for them to enjoy many miles away from Lincoln. Thank you Hope!
