THE LAMPLIGHTER A Newsletter for the Members of
St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Gaither United Methodist Church www.stpaulssykesville.org November 2016
Thanksgiving
It is said that once as the Indian independence leader, Mohandas K. Gandhi, boarded a train, a sandal fell
off one of his feet. The train began to move, and there was no time to get off to retrieve it. So Gandhi
removed his other sandal and dropped it off the train too. When asked to explain his actions, Gandhi
explained that he hoped in this way the beggar who found the one sandal would now find a matching pair.
What a wonderful story of spontaneous generosity!
Later this month, we will celebrate Thanksgiving. It is vital and important to cultivate a spirit of gratitude
and to be thankful to God and to others for all they have done for us. But this story is a good reminder that
it is also important to live in a way that will give others a reason to be thankful. We can look for occasions
to be generous, so that others will give thanks to God too. When we give—to the church, to strangers, or to
those who we love—we share in God’s work in the world. As it says in James, “Every generous act of
giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is
no variation or shadow due to change.” (1:17)
Peace,
Doug.

St. Paul’s Children’s Choirs
In the past, we’ve had two children’s choirs: Cherubs (ages 4 to 1st Grade) and Angels (Grades 2-5). We’d like to start the Cherub Choir back up this fall, and we are looking for someone to lead one of the choirs. Kim Pyles currently leads the Angel Choir, but is willing to lead either choir. We have plenty of music and CDs for both choirs. If you are interested in leading one of the choirs or have questions, please contact either Pastor Terri Rae, Pastor Doug, or Kim Pyles at [email protected] or410-549-1050.
The Fishers of Men
The Fishers are looking for musicians and vocalist of any age who would like to join us in singing and playing contemporary Christian music! We welcome new members who would like to play and sing regularly, as well as those who would like to join us every now and then. Feel free to stop by during our weekly practice sessions on Tuesdays at 7pm in the St Paul’s Sanctuary to try it out! For more information, contact Rich Reed at [email protected].
Children's Book Drive! We are collecting gently used children's books for Carroll County Food Sunday. Often families must wait hours until it is their turn to get groceries at this food bank. Children often have nothing to do. We are setting up a book area for the children to look at books, then take one or two home each week. These are often families with few books at home. Some mothers may take newer books home as gifts for their children around the holidays. If you are cleaning out and getting rid of children's books, please consider donating. There is a box for books by the front doors at church. For more information, contact Jean Luebke at 410-795-0599 or [email protected]
PARISH ADVENT STUDY
DOWN TO EARTH:
THE HOPES AND FEARS OF
ALL THE YEARS ARE MET IN
THEE TONIGHT
A virgin birth. God’s son…a helpless baby. Fleeing certain
death. Nothing about the Christmas story is ordinary.
It’s enough to confound the mind and make the heart
contrite. Join us as we explore God’s Christmas surprise to
us and examine how it changed everything.
The study will meet in the Social Hall of St. Paul’s on
Wednesdays, November 30, December 7 and 14. We will
begin at 6:00PM with a light dinner and conclude by
7:30PM. Study books will be available in the church office and in the narthex of both churches.
All ages are welcome! There will be different learning stations for children filled with crafts and
fun. To sign up, contact the church office, see the clipboards at church, or visit
stpaulssykesville.org.

ST. PAUL’S MISSION UPDATE
November Mission – Fisher House Foundation
In honor of Veteran’s Day and of those who are in harm’s way so we can live free:
A Fisher House is “a home away from home” where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost
while a loved one is receiving treatment at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are
normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There
are 71 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 29 VA medical centers. Many more houses
are under construction or in design. https://www.fisherhouse.org/ Please consider making a monetary
donation.
Other ways to contribute:
Hero Miles - your frequent flier miles can help get airline tickets to injured and ill service members and
their families. Donate your miles today.
Hotels for Heroes - program provides hotel rooms to the families of wounded, injured, and ill military
service members who are undergoing treatment at authorized medical centers when a Fisher House is not
available. Rooms are made possible through the donation of rewards points by the hotel's rewards
members.
Memorial Donation - you can support the Fisher House program in the name of a loved one by making a
memorial donation. We require the full name of the person the donation will memorialize, and contact
information for a loved one so we can acknowledge donations to their family.
Help us help others,
Ridia Dearie, Mission Committee Chair
THANK YOU! We would like to thank our friends and family at St. Paul’s for all of their thoughts, support, and prayers during my wife’s, Norma Brown, illness and passing. We are blessed to have a wonderful
and caring church family here at St. Paul’s. Our family felt your love and support during this most difficult time. The family would like to thank Pastors Terri Rae and Doug for their numerous visits to comfort and console as well as conducting the memorial service. We would like to especially thank Betty May and the Choir for the special music, soloists Gary Rains and Charlene Toth, the sound technicians, and the ushers for their assistance at Norma’s service.
We are truly blessed to be a part of the St. Paul’s family. C. Todd Brown and family

St. PAUL’S NURSERY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS We need volunteers in St. Paul's Nursery. Providing a warm, nurturing environment for our babies and toddlers helps develop trust and mutual respect. As children learn that church is a trustworthy place, and adults
there can be trusted, this becomes the basis for trusting God. If you are interested in helping with our little ones, please contact Carol Bleam at [email protected] or at 443-845-2491.

The Lamplighter is going digital!
The Lamplighter is currently available every month on our website, stpaulssykesville.org. You can find
archived issues there as well. As we move forward into the digital age, we will be moving the newsletter to a
fully digital format in January 2017.
Beginning in January, 2017, the Lamplighter will no longer be mass mailed to members of the
congregation. Printed copies will still be available at both Churches, and individual mailing can be
arranged by special request.
We will also be shifting our format! Beginning in January, all upcoming events and information will be
available online, and the Lamplighter will focus on reporting all the wonderful things going on in our Parrish,
community, and members’ lives. If you have any stories, pictures, and video to share, please contact Katie
Birger at [email protected]. Pictures of children’s faces should always have their parents permission to
publish.
Upcoming events should still be sent to Katie, for publication on the website.
