Tunbridge Wells Borough Council Elections Thursday 3rd May 2012 Caroline Derrick is a local Councillor, photographer and filmmaker. She calls herself a ‘foodie’ and loves motorsport. She is dedicated to improving road safety in the town. “I come from a poor background and my father was a Labour supporter. As a child, I couldn’t understand why if Labour was the party for the working classes, my parents had nothing to show for their hard work. Not much was expected for my future either. When Margaret Thatcher came to power I heard a different message: no matter what your background, it’s in your power to take control and achieve your goals. That was inspiring, and I’ve been a Conservative ever since.” Ed Hastie was elected Councillor for Goudhurst and Lamberhurst last year. He works in the City and enjoys playing tennis, swimming, running and reading. He says the history, architecture and beauty of the countryside make the borough a wonderful place to live. “I don’t come from a Conservative family. My Mum was a socialist for decades and my Dad nearly joined the Communist Party! I became a Conservative because I am attracted to the freedom of opportunity the party believes in. I also believe that as many decisions as possible should be made at the local level to ensure people feel involved in the decision-making process.” Nasir Jamil has been a Town Councillor for Southborough. He works as an IT consultant and is passionate about helping others with computer education and awareness. He loves cycling, and is a campaigner for open spaces. He wants to address the problems of traffic congestion in Tunbridge Wells. “I believe in the Conservative Party because it encourages freedom, enterprise, and supports people to stand on their own two feet. I joined the Party so I could help promote these values to change society. I was very inspired by the Conservative Party leadership when they encouraged ordinary people to participate in the political process.” At 26, Nicholas Rogers is the youngest member of the Council and Deputy Chairman of Tunbridge Wells Conservatives. He lives with his partner, Liam, and their three cats, and works in the rail industry. In his spare time he writes fiction and is working on his fourth novel. “I’m a Conservative because I believe in personal freedom and responsibility. I believe that people should be trusted to make decisions in their own best interests. I believe that government is usually the problem, not the solution. I’ve always seen myself as a bit of a political rebel, to be honest!” Phil Cooke is 33. He is married and enjoys cooking, eating out, playing guitar, writing music, and watching comedy and sport. He works in retail and is a volunteer in the local Conservative Association. If there is one thing he would change about Tunbridge Wells, he would want more places with live music and art. “I’m a Conservative because I believe fairness, integrity and honesty should be the binding of society. The localism and Big Society agendas are an opportunity for us to become a nation where people take responsibility for the consequences of their actions, but also reap the rewards.” [nick_rogers] [ed_hastie] [caroline_derrick] [Gresham_cooke] [phil] Jess Wright is a leading member of Conservative Future.
