PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Birthdays April May June 14 Lori Leichman 12 Judy Schultz 8 Jackie Scheffer 22 Christine Frith 10 Mary Mortka 26 Elena Alvarez 13 Lorrian Gagne

Hi Ladies, April 2018 “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Dr. Wayne Dyer I found this quote the other day and took a few moments to read and digest it. This winter has been a challenge for me personally and I have had to look at my life differently. Things that I have known to be a constant are no longer, but by changing the way I look at things, these things do look different.

I say this as part of my President’s Message for The Handclasp because I believe we all need to look at our role in Schenectady BPW differently. Schenectady BPW is our club and a place of support, knowledge and outreach to other women in our community.

I will be leaving the role of President of this amazing club this Spring, I am certain that our club will contin-ue to operate and thrive into the new Schenectady BPW year. With that being said, we all need to continue to look at our club and the programs we offer and say to ourselves, “What can I do differently to help the club grow?” Maybe it would be offering suggestions for a program for our monthly meetings; maybe it is a project to help promote women helping women; maybe it is an opportunity to talk about Schenectady BPW to a group to gain new members.

So while this is my last message in the Handclasp, I would like to thank everyone for a great two years as your president. The support from everyone has been great and I look forward to our club growing and thriving in the coming years. Lori

Lori S Reffue Schenectady BPW President

Lori, Thank you so much for your service and dedication to our club. Although you will be stepping down as president, we will be happy to know that you will be here to support the board as our Immediate Past-President. Our entire club is praying for your family, hoping that Dave and your Mom are well on their way to a speedy recovery. Cyndie Immediate Past-President

Answer: Congress imposed its first personal income tax in 1861.

Tips & Tidbits

“SAFETY FIRST” Today’s world is much different than when we were growing up and even for our children. In this Side Bar message a few tips are shared that may be helpful. If there is anything you would like to add, email them to [email protected].

Family Schedule of Events – Maintain a calendar so all fam-ily members can post meetings, activities, or events that they are attending. Included on the calendar should be name of event, location, time (beginning/end times), a contact number, mode of transportation to the event, and if you are going to the event with a family member or friend.

Telephone Contact – If you live alone, maintain telephone contact with another family member or friend throughout the week. (This can work both ways, if you know of someone who lives alone, create a pattern of calling or visiting. This way, if there is a problem and someone is not answering their phone or door, it may be time to alert the authorities.)

Deliveries – Do you have groceries, prescriptions, flowers, etc. delivered to your residence? Make a habit of knowing the name(s) of individuals from these businesses who will be making the delivery. Some places will even text a picture of the person who will arrive at your door and up-to-the-minute updates on arrival times. ~Submitted by: Linda Rolfe~

Woman of the Year/Jane Osterhout, Chair It is that time again to nominate someone to be honored as Woman of the Year. This year we have decided to honor one qualified woman to receive this honor.

The application is on our Website. The due date to submit the application is May 1, 2018. Please be sure that the application is complete when you submit it.

I am sure you all must know someone who is qualified to be our 2018 Woman of the Year. —Jane Osterhout / Chair

BE AWARE: (Facebook post by LITE987.com as told by Andrea Moscato)

A Syracuse woman says she contacted police after her daughter received a disturbing phone call. Andrea says police told her daughter that the tactic is typical of human traffickers.

"If you receive a call from this number (redacted) please contact the police. My daughter received a call today, the man told her I had been hurt in an accident on Erie Blvd and that he had me and my phone, he needed her to come get me. She told him she was going to verify the accident with the police, he told her if she called the police he would kill me. She could hear a woman cry-ing in the background. My daughter hung up and attempted to call me, I didn’t answer I was extremely busy at work. Her other at-tempted calls to me went right to voicemail as did my 10 attempt-ed calls back to her. At this point a receptionist at work found me and told me that 911 was on the phone verifying that I was at work and for me to call my daughter. When I finally was able to get through to Tori she was hysterical but had contacted 911 and spoken to police. She was informed that this is a tactic of a sex- trafficking ring. If my daughter would have tried to come to me, I probably never would’ve seen her or my grandson again! She told me one of the only reasons she didn’t go to Erie Blvd was because she had my car, and knew I wasn’t in a car accident, thank God, hers wouldn’t start this morning! I was never so relieved to hug my child and grandchild."

Andrea's daughter was smart to ask for confirmation of the acci-dent, and to contact police once she was threatened. According to further posts by Andrea, the number the alleged traffickers used was actually a fake number - the actual owner of the number had nothing to do with the scam.

Always verify information when you're asked to go anywhere, and share this same caution with your family members.

Equal Pay Day 2018: The Bad Trend closing the Gender Pay Gap By Claire Zillman, Fortune

Tuesday, April 10 marks Equal Pay Day in the United States—a day that signifies how far into the new calendar year women have to work to earn what men made the previous year. The occasion prompts an annual examination of the gender pay gap in the U.S. and this year such study will turn up good news.

According to Census data released in September, the gender pay gap—generally defined as the difference between men’s earnings and women’s—shrank in a statistically significant way for the first time since 2007, with women earning 80.5 cents for every dollar men earned in 2016. That was up from the 79.6 cents women made in 2015. All told, women’s average earnings were $41,554 for full-time workers in 2016, compared to an average of $51,640 for men.

But women shouldn’t give a whole-hearted cheer just yet.

Part of the progress is worth celebrating—average wages for wom-en increased by 0.7% in 2016, returning to 2007 pre-recession lev-els. A big part of that uptick is attributable to women’s educational attainment. In analysis of the Census data, Ariane Hegewisch, program director for employment and earnings at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, points to women being “highly invested in their education—more so than men.” That pursuit prepares women for more lucrative jobs.

But at the same time, men’s wages decreased 0.4%, failing to recover crisis-era losses. When the Brookings Institution looked at this on-going trend, it cited three factors: workers getting more of their compensation in benefits versus cash wages, labor’s declining share of national income (compared to capital’s growing share), and the rise of inequality or the widening of the gap between the earn-ings of the highest-paid workers and those in lower-paid tiers. “Economists differ over how much of this is the result of globaliza-tion, technological change, changing social mores, and government policies,” the Brookings report says, “but there is no longer much dispute about the fact that inequality is increasing.”

Job site Indeed says that men’s full-time, full-year, inflation-adjusted earnings peaked in 1973 at $54,030. Since then through 2016, they dropped in real terms by almost $2,400 as women’s earnings got a boost of $11,000. “That means almost 20% of the gender wage gap closure over this time frame is due to earnings losses for men,” according to Indeed. “In fact, in almost half the years since 1968 where the gender wage gap closed, men’s earnings fell while women’s earnings rose.”

The phenomenon paints closing the gender wage gap as a zero-sum game, but that’s not the case. The IWPR notes that for the divide between men and women to close, women’s real wages just need to rise faster than men’s, but men’s wages can tick up

too.

The next Fashion Show Committee Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018, (just before the Board Meeting) at 5:30 pm at The First National Bank of Scotia Boardroom on Balltown Rd. If you are able to attend, please email Cyndie at [email protected] or call on 518-370-7249 Please keep these things in mind as we start planning our next Fash-ion Show.

People in attendance add tremendously to our numbers. Invite your friends and family or better yet try to fill a table of 10.

Make sure that you SAVE THE DATE of the event. Many of our members didn’t show this year. We need our members to be ex-cited about this event to get others to attend.

Talk about our event to local businesses and vendors. They can support us by donating something for the silent auction or pur-chasing a vendor table.

Think of, and offer ideas, for fun ways to raise money at this event. Some of our most successful ideas came from members making suggestions.

Please know that I appreciate any help that you can offer. One person taking on a small responsibility and following through really makes a difference and helps to avoid a few people having to do so much that they are overwhelmed. Remember that women working together can accomplish great things!!!

SAVE THE DATE: Our next Fashion Show is scheduled for

Sunday, November 4th 2018.

Linda L. Rolfe, Scholarship Chair Committee Members: Martha Asselin, Anneke Bull, Donna Christensen, Jane Schramm, and Kathleen (Kate) Toombs

Career Development/Elena Alvarez, Chair The Career Development Program will be meeting next week to discuss organizing a program for our October business meeting in which the National Business Women’s Week is celebrated. This committee is in need of new members. Talk to Elena if you are interested!! According to the BPW Foundation http://bpwfoundation.org/about/national-business-womens-week-2/,,

The concept of National Business Women’s Week® originated with Emma Dot Partridge, Executive Secretary of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1924 to 1927.

The first annual observance of NBWW was held April 15-22, 1928, when National President Lena Madesin Phillips opened the week with a nationally broadcast speech. She stated that the pur-pose of the week was “to focus public attention upon a better business woman for a better business world.

From this early effort, NBWW has grown into a nationwide salute to all workingwomen. The program for the first observance of NBWW included: Legislative Day devoted to national, state and local legislation of interest to women; Education Day devoted to emphasizing the need for equitable educational opportunities; Club Rally Day for prospective new members; Community Day honoring leaders in the community; and Goodwill Day devoted to working with other women’s organizations.

In 1938, NBWW was moved to the third full week of October. U.S. President Herbert Hoover was the first president to issue a letter recognizing NBWW and the contributions and achievements of working women. The celebration of National Business Women’s Week® has helped to promote leadership roles for women and to increase opportunities for their advancement professionally and personally.

We will discuss two panels for the October meeting. One panel would be about successful women in the Capital Region who may have created new businesses or have high level corporate positions. The other panel would bring speakers who discuss important features and which can make women more successful. The Committee will propose these two panels and ask the BPW board to identify the more appropriate for our October meeting.

Important elements in organizing this event by our Committee are to continue our BPW tradition and to advertise to our membership the significance of our program. The cost will be same as any other business meeting, and we will invite several other women organizations. We may need to use some of the funding in our budget allocated for this program in the event that speakers charge a fee.

More information will be provided at the May board meeting. ~~~Elena Alvarez, PhD, Chair

Among our Members / Announcements

Jane Osterhout writes: I just want to let everyone know how proud I am of my Son Sean, (on the right,) my Grandson Matthew (middle,) and my Grandson Joshua, (on the left.) Sean has been a Police Officer for about 18 years. He is currently a Saratoga County Sherriff Deputy. Matthew recently grad-uated from the Zone 5 Police Academy, and is also a Saratoga County Deputy Sheriff.

Joshua is currently attending the Zone 5 Police Academy and will graduate July 15, 2018, and he will be employed by the Albany County Sherriff’s Department as a Deputy Sherriff. I would like to congratulate all three of them for following their dreams. I know Sean always want-ed to be a Police Officer, and while attending the Police Academy in Greene County, he was also a full-time employee with Price Chop-per. He drove to Greene County every day after work to fulfill his edu-cation and his dream..

Matthew and Joshua have always had the same dream of being like their Dad, and though they have been through some tough times, they are also fulfilling their dreams.

It is very difficult to be Men and Women in Blue at this time. I pray every day for their safety, and for all of the Men and Women in Blue. I know our entire club joins Jane in praying for the safety of these brave men and thank then for their service to the community.

From Val Kerker: I am happy to report that I was asked to head up the Bake Sale for the Rosary Altar Society of the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Route 50 in Glenville.

While I have never hosted a bake sale before and personally cannot bake to save my life, the Bake Sale is part of our annual Tag Sale, held on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th, starting at 8:00 a.m. both days.

In addition, there will be raffles available. This supports a charitable cause and I am asking my BPW Sisters to at-tend if they can.

Also, we have been asked to obtain gift certificates (minimum $25 amounts) from local businesses to be raffled off. If anyone in BPW has a business and wishes to provide a gift certificate, or wishes to purchase a gift certifi-cate and donate it, that would be great. There are many businesses in our area which have been very helpful to the Church in the past, including: FoCastle Farms, Target, Ruggieros Pizza, Krause’s at Socha Plaza, etc.

If anyone wishes to bake for the bake sale, I can make arrangements to meet to pick up the items or they can be delivered the day of the bake sale. We are hoping to get some gluten-free and nut-free items as well.

I am also inviting those of our BPW who are communicants of other churches to let their church know the date and time of our sale, with the hope some of those folks will want to come. This is our big fundraiser of the year and we work very hard to make it a success.
