Whateach of us needs to learn is how tobecome more generous withwhatever God entrusts to us.”

I hope you will want to read thisnew book, The JerusalemAssassin, but I have to issue awarning. Don’t start this book ifyou are busy, because you will notbe able to put it down. Also, awarning that it is a timely, politicalstory that is unnerving to read. Now that I have you completelyconvinced that I am crazy to putthis in our church library, let meassure you that Joel Rosenberg isa highly regarded, esteemed writerof political history and events. Healso has a knack, as a Christianfiction writer, to turn timely politicalmatters into intriguing “what ifs?”and I sure hope this neverhappens! In this story, Marcus Ryker, who isa former U.S. Secret Serviceagent and now turned internationaloperative, is charged with trackingdown whoever is killing Americanofficials involved in crucial MiddleEast peace treaty negotiations, only to find bigger, more dan-gerous conspiracy lurking in theshadows. By the time Ryker andhis team fully understand the plotand who’s behind the plot, theyfind they have less than 96 hoursto disrupt a terrible evil that hasbeen set in motion. This is all I am telling you, I hopeyou will want to read this book.Call me if you would like to be puton the list for reading this novel. Also, don’t hesitate to ask me tomeet you in the parking lot for abook exchange. Jesus had a vision for His ministry. He stated thatvision in Luke 4:18-19“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He hasanointed Me to preach good news (euaggelizo inGreek, also translated as ‘gospel’) to the poor. Hehas sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisonersand recovery of sight for the blind, to release theoppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’sfavor” (NIV).Because He spoke these words while in thesynagogue in Nazareth, some call this His“Nazareth Manifesto.” A manifesto is a statementthat makes someone’s intentions known. Jesuswas telling the Jews in first century Palestine, andus: These are the reasons why I have come, andthese are the things I will do. From that point inHis ministry on, Jesus stayed focused on these objectives. He did notallow Himself to be distracted by cultural or political events—He stayedtrue to this vision.Jesus also had a mission statement. He stated His mission at the end ofLuke 4, “I must preach the good news (euaggelizo, again. Gospel) of theKingdom of God to the other towns also because that is why I was sent”(Luke 4: 43 NIV).How did Jesus preach the good news, or gospel of the Kingdom of God?Jesus cast out demons and healed the sick (Luke 4: 35, 4: 39, 4: 40, 41);He taught with authority (Luke 4: 31, 32); He kept on preaching in syn-agogues (Luke 4: 44); and He prayed in solitary places (Luke 4: 42).Luke 4: 18-19 was a description of what He was going to do. In Hissecond statement in Luke 4:43, He told His disciples how He was goingto accomplish His vision—by continuing to do what He had done inCapernaum. Jesus was going to operate in the power of God, usingsupernatural miracles, signs, and wonders; teaching, preaching, andprayer to make His point: I am God’s Son and I have come to releasethe Kingdom of God.A vision points to the future. It is what an organization, even a church, wants to become or do. It is the goal or objective of the church; it setsa defined direction. The vision should be central to strategic planning. It focuses the ministries of the church and gives leadership a ‘target’ tohelp them make decisions for things like budgets, hiring, ministries tosupport, teaching, training, and speakers, for example. It also providesa template that members of the church can use to guide Bible studies, prayers, and small-group lessons. It must be broad enough to encom-pass all that God has for the church, but contain elements specificenough to provide focus for choices and decisions. The mission statement is different from the vision. While the visiondescribes what we want the future of the church to look like, the missionis what the church is doing today to accomplish the vision. Jesus was

OurVision and Mission

Statements

anointed to preach the gospel, proclaim freedom, and set theprisoner free—His vision. He“preached” the gospel inCapernaum by performingmiracles, signs, and wonders inthe power of the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, and prayer –His mission. In His vision state-ment He tells us what He is goingto do in the future; He describesHis intentions. In His missionstatement, He tells us what He hasdone and what He will continue todo to accomplish His vision. You might have noticed that ourvision statement is close to Jesus’.Our ultimate objective is toadvance the Kingdom of God inthe world. Like Jesus, we intend todo it in the power of God. Also, likeJesus, we intend to be a churchthat “equips His disciples”; sendingthem out to “Jerusalem, Judea,Samaria, and the ends of theearth.”Our prayer is that you will askJesus how you can make ourvision and mission an excitingreality. The Christian Education MinistryJohn Van Wagoner, Chair

These two funds were establishedin September 2013 to replace theno longer available, long-standingLovett Fund. The only source ofmonies now for missionary trans-portation costs for Table Talks or topreach; shortfalls; or special needsnot covered by the church’s annualBenevolence support, is from theMissionary Care Designated Fund. When Henderson County organi-zations our church supportsthrough Local Missions are in needof extra monies for their support, the only source is the Local Mis-sions Designated Fund. This is a reminder that, should youwant to give to either of theseaccounts, please write your checkto the church and on the bottomstate either “For Missionary CareDF” or “For Local Missions DF.”Both committees thank you.

The Great CommissionAfter His resurrection Jesuscommanded his disciples asrecorded in Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said tothem, “All authority in heavenand on earth has been given tome. Go therefore and makedisciples of all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Fatherand of the Son and of the HolySpirit, teaching them to observeall that I have commanded you.And behold, I am with youalways, to the end of the age.”

We have partnered with Steveand Margie Doty since the late’90’s as they labored in NorthernThailand with the Wycliffe BibleTranslators. In Thailand thereare many groups that do nothave a written language and thusno access to a Bible in theirnative language.Steve has overseen the depart-ments of Linguistics, Literacy,Translation, Language Learning, Language Survey, and Computing.Margie has taught linguistics and Bible Translations at Payap University, the first Christian university in Thailand. Over the years they haveworked in these areas with increasing emphasis and time given to Bibletranslation. Steve oversees translation work for five countries helpingteams with their language programs and translation work.A recent course that Steve taught was training in grammatical analysiswhich trains students to figure out the grammatical patterns in anylanguage allowing them to be immersed in a regional language and beable to translate the Bible into that language. Often Steve will writeabout challenging situations. It is usual to have translation students from up to ten countries. Thismeans that they have to mentally sort through the language they grewup with, maybe the official language of the country, English, and thelanguage of the target region they are working with. Some of the chal-lenges are created by the different grammatical structures of one ofthose language and English which is the basic language from whichthey base their translation. Another challenge to the Dotys is that theircity, Chiang Mai, has the world’s worst air pollution and wearing facemasks is part of self preservation. This is because millions of farmers inSoutheast Asia burn the land getting it ready to plant.Another example of a challenge was what Steve found when a studentgroup was translating the Gospel of Mark. They found that the targetlanguage did not use passive clauses which required expressing themas direct clauses. The usual Bible translation plan is to have a student group translate thewhole Bible, and Steve has learned to have them do the whole processwith the first book all the way through to the printing, giving them athorough training including error correction. Another very important termfor these groups to experience is “feedback,” so that the process oftranslation become more deeply engrained which hones each person’stranslation skills and each group’s skills. Usually the groups maintain thesame members for some time, and their collective translation skills arecrucial to successful outcomes. It has become too dangerous for the Dotys to travel around in South-east Asia, so now they just stay in Indonesia. Let’s pray for their safetyand for blessings on this challenging work.
