News from the Parishes A complete list of church services, including those at Barford, Wasperton and

Sherbourne, is displayed on the notice board in your church.

Dear Friends,

We are probably all familiar with the phrase you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. It makes me think of those wildlife programmes in which you see monkeys grooming one another. In a human context, it seems to be about entering into a collaborative relationship where you help each other so that, ideally, you both achieve what you want. There is nothing wrong with that, although sometimes the phrase seems to have an overtone of being willing to do slightly ‘dodgy’ things for one another to achieve what you each want, or working together to get what you want at the expense of others. None-the-less, the world would probably be a better place if more people were to scratch each other’s backs rather than to look after number one - to use another phrase.

However, Jesus wanted us to do more than scratch each other’s backs. Having summed up all the Jewish laws and principles in two commands “Love God” and “Love your neighbour as much as you love yourself”,

like all great teachers he went on to tell stories and give examples to explain what that meant. One of those has led to another familiar saying - being willing to go the extra mile. In Jesus’ time, Israel was occupied by the Roman army. One of their rules was that any soldier could force a civilian to carry his pack for one mile. There was no back scratching involved here. The soldier could just tell you to do it and there was no benefit for you. It was a small part of why the Romans were hated by many. However, Jesus said on one occasion “If someone forces you to go with him one mile, go with him two miles.” It would have been astonishing to his hearers. There was no advantage to be gained from it. He was saying that we should treat even our ‘enemies’ with love and generosity.

This is very demanding. It may be that some really good people can manage it in their own strength, but I find that I need God’s help to manage even what I do. For the good of our society and world, I pray that more of us will be willing to go the extra mile more often.

Loxley Church Concert Our next concert will be at St Nicholas’ Church Loxley on Sunday, 20 August, at 3.00 pm and will be performed by two outstanding local musicians. Lindsay Martin is a wonderful flautist with a beautiful tone and lovely phrasing and she will be taking us through a selection of the best music in the flute repertoire, interspersed with some sparking solos from her accompanist, Antoine Mitchell - pianist, composer, conductor and musician extraordinaire. We do hope that you will be able to come to what, we are sure, will be a most memorable and enjoyable concert. As usual, the concert will last for 60 minutes and is free - with a retiring collection in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. DW

Rachel Saum’s Ordination On Wednesday, 2 July, Rachel Saum will be ordained as a priest in Coventry Cathedral. Rachel is known to many of you through her contacts with Hampton Lucy and Loxley schools. She is currently the curate in an adjacent group of parishes centred on Lighthorne, but has one Sunday a month with us when she leads the Family Service at Hampton Lucy. Rachel lives in Charlecote Vicarage, where she leads the Field Community - a small Christian community, aiming to reach out to younger people in our villages. We all send you our best wishes, Rachel, and will be thinking of you on that day. SL

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI Karen Van Hoffman travelled from Ludlow to our June meeting to speak on Exquisite needlework with fine silver wire. She began with a resumé of her life and explained how she became involved in this delicate craftwork. All-in-all, it was both fascinating and humorous. She brought along examples of her work for us to admire which were also available for purchase! Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 5 July, in Charlecote

Village Hall when Gillian White will return with a talk entitled Queen Victoria - a life in portraits'. As always, new members will be most welcome. On Saturday, 22 July, we shall be holding our Carousel Supper. In September there will be a Bring and Buy Coffee Morning in aid of British Blind Sport. This follows on from an inspirational talk given to the WI in February by Ian Carr, and proceeds will support his marathon run, in which he will be fundraising for BBS. Everyone will be most welcome (see The Notice Board. Page 6.) MJW

News from Charlecote Park Quick! If you want to explore the parkland while it’s relatively quiet, come along before the schools break up! Bring your binoculars for some birdwatching, and you may see some of the new fawns out and about too. Our events seem to be selling out quicker than ever and, where we can, we’re adding more dates. The Felting Workshops have been very popular and visitors are enjoying spending a peaceful afternoon learning a new craft. We’re bringing outdoor theatre back to Charlecote this summer and bookings are also going well for both shows. Three Inch Fools is performing Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on 13 August, and The Chapterhouse Theatre Company is bringing their production of The Wind in the Willows on 2 September. Check the website and ring 01789 470277 to book for all events. The Avenue Plant Shop team were very chuffed to see that they had been ahead of Chelsea trends this year, having stocked up on geums, salvias and camassias before they were declared to be this year’s must-haves. You all seem to be buying the peat-free David Austin roses as gifts for friends and relatives and we’re trying to stock the ones you’ll see in our gardens. Matt and the Garden Team have worked their usual wonders and the herbaceous borders are really looking glorious. Do stop and chat with our lovely garden volunteers if you want to know more about a particular plant. MG

Wellesbourne & District Lions Club July is here and that can only mean one thing in the Lions’ fundraising calendar - our big event of the year, the Annual Raft Race from Wasperton to Stratford-upon-Avon. The date is Sunday, 23 July. As in previous years, we are jointly hosting the event with our friends from Shakespeare Lions. Entries are looking healthy at this

stage, but there is still plenty of time to enter a raft in the race. For full details and how to enter please go to the dedicated website - raftrace.org.uk This year the main beneficiary is Riding for the Disabled (RDA) based in Warwick, and we are hoping to raise over £10,000 to help to fund items to be used in a new centre of excellence to be constructed in Shrewley. The race is great spectacle. If you haven’t seen it before, then why not check it out this year. The first raft is scheduled to start from Wasperton at 9.00am, with super-fast rafts setting off first. They will be followed by all the fun and novelty craft. First rafts will arrive in Stratford-upon-Avon soon after 10.00am, with the rest crossing the finish line opposite the theatre by mid-afternoon. There are good viewing areas at Hampton Lucy and Alveston Village. The Lions’ first Classic Gathering, on Saturday, 4 June, was a very successful day with over fifty vehicles on display, ranging from a small static steam engine to tractors, and from the ‘fastest shed on wheels’ to many

pre- and post-war vehicles of all makes. Visitors were undeterred by the less-than-brilliant weather, so we will be planning more gatherings for future years. “Thanks” go to everyone who supported us. In particular to the Cricket Club, Bowls Club, Sports Club, Blood Bikes, and the fire fighters who brought along their fire engine. AS

Parish Clerk Needed in Loxley Loxley Parish Council is seeking to appoint a Parish Clerk to provide basic administrative support and financial management. The weekly commitment is 4 to 5 hours and the salary will be £2,000 pa. For further details, and/or an informal discussion, please contact Glynn Jones at [email protected]. GJ

Charlecote Village Open Gardens, 2017 Despite persistent rain throughout the day, gardens in Charlecote were open on Bank Holiday Monday and there was a steady flow of intrepid visitors. In the Vicarage garden the very smart marquee, which had been generously loaned to us, came into its own as tea, cakes, and very fresh scones were hastily carried in out of the rain. The children who followed the Mindfulness Trail came away clutching pots containing a flower seed. All of the hosts enjoyed welcoming visitors to their gardens and some even talked of doing it again! The event raised £395, plus generous donations amounting to a further £160. We are very grateful for this support for St Leonard's Church, and pleased that everyone enjoyed themselves, despite the weather.

Life in Miniature - Compton Verney 18 July marks the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death and provides a timely opportunity to reflect on her life, times and work. Compton Verney - thought by many to be the location for the fictional Thornton Lacey in Austen’s Mansfield Park - is marking the bicentenary with a special display drawn from its remarkable collection of portrait miniatures. The Warwickshire Art Gallery and Park is home to one of the most important collections of this artform anywhere in the world. The Dumas Collection consists of 842 examples, and has been generously loaned to the museum on a long-term basis by Simon Dumas. Jane Austen was an enthusiastic miniaturist who used the medium to capture her friends and family. She famously compared her novels to her own miniatures, declaring that “they were little bits of Ivory on which I work with so fine a brush.” Bath, the city with which she is so closely associated, was a centre of miniature production. Of the 160 artists working in Bath by the end of the 18th century, roughly half were miniaturists. Jane often deftly used references to miniatures in her novels to subtly convey background information, or gently move the narrative along. The focus for this display features female artists, linking the newly-interpreted Victorian Women’s Library with the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death. The display has examples from the Regency era of the later 18th and early 19th centuries, when women miniaturists were most prolific, with a surprising number making a career of it. Compton Verney has a boredom-busting programme that will help you keep hot and bothered kids busy - and sophisticated grown-ups happy - throughout the summer. If you think visiting an art gallery and going to the park is boring, then you’ve clearly never visited Compton Verney. Warwickshire’s best art gallery and park is not only a treasure trove and haven for art and nature lovers but, with its summer-long schedule of events, it’s also the perfect destination to kick back and have fun. Visit the website: www.comptonverney.org.uk to see the full and varied range of family activities over the next few months. TJ
