Page 1 Dear Monroe County 4-H, Here it is, February. I am finishing up the plans for Clover College this coming weekend. I think about all the relationships that spring out of 4-H for our children and ourselves. This is a great thing about 4-H, youth and adults make relationships with a variety of people whom they may not otherwise know. This happens in a few different ways. There are mentoring roles, Youth/ Adult partnerships, and peer friendships that all grow and are nurtured. Mentor roles are important. Research has shown that one of the most significant indicators of resiliency in youth is adults, other than parents, who hold that child in high esteem. These adults help youth see their part of the larger world. The relationship that 4-H adults develop with the youth they work with leads to strong self-concepts in the youth and allows them to know another adult that likes them and thinks well of them. All this leads to strong adults as they leave 4-H. Youth/Adult Partnerships seems like a new topic that is everywhere. In reality, it is what 4-H has done for 100+ years. It is youth working on ideas with support and guidance from adults. It is the next step from mentoring, not only do we teach youth and build a relationship, we trust them to make decisions and follow through on plans they develop. We empower them to make a better future for themselves and for us. I think though that our peer relationships are the most readily noticeable. If you come from a 4-H background you can probably name at least one person you would not have as a friend if it were not for 4-H. As one Jr. Leader put it, “4-H has helped me find my people. We all need our people, and they might not be at school or other places in out lives. As I watch kids interact at fair, camp, or other 4-H events it is always cool to see kids that I know would not be friends at school hang out and learn about each other. In the spirit of the season I would like to thank all our volunteers for putting their hearts into 4-Hers and growing the relationships that in turn grow our kids into strong leaders for tomorrow. Dear Monroe County 4-H, Here it is, February. I am finishing up the plans for Clover College this coming weekend. I think about all the relationships that spring out of 4-H for our children and ourselves. This is a great thing about 4-H, youth and adults make relationships with a variety of people whom they may not otherwise know. This happens in a few different ways. There are mentoring roles, Youth/Adult partnerships, and peer friendships that all grow and are nurtured. It is the next step from mentoring, not only do we teach youth and build a relationship, we trust them to

We are happy to announce that the dates and locations for the 2020 Area Animal Science Days contests will be Thursday, June 11 in Jefferson County (Southern Site) and Friday, June 12 in Marathon County (Northern Site). This year State 4-H is consolidating the regional contests into a northern and southern host site. They have made the decision to try 2 host sites this year due to changes in staffing capacity in both the Wisconsin 4-H Program and in the College of Ag Life Sciences (CALS). We are committed to delivering a high quality educational experience for all youth who participate and have done our best to choose sites that can handle the larger amount of youth participants and dates that fit into the packed summer schedule of 4-H education-al events and animal-science related events. Registration information will be posted online soon at https://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4haganimalscience/area-animal-science-days/. We will send out another announcement when registration is available. County Educators and Coordinators are welcome and encouraged to attend and see what takes place at this event! Please contact Joe Muellenberg with questions - [email protected]

BEEF WEIGH-IN ID Procedures for 2020

Due online or in the Extension Office by 4:30 pm on

March 2, 2020. (March 1 is a Sunday this year)

The options for identifying Beef animals for the 2020 Monroe

County Fair are as follows:

• WEIGH IN: The annual Beef Weigh-In will Be Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Equity Sales Barn, 6089 WI Hwy 16, Sparta.

The hours are 9-11 am. The make up day is Saturday, February 22, 2020 if the roads are too bad. Same hours and location.

• SELF ID: Use the on-line Self ID process. This is the recommended process if you do not participate in the weigh in. It will collect the same information, including photos that we have been collecting the last few years, just in a new format.

• Here is the link to the information page for Self ID: https://monroe.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-projects/meat-animal-id/ It is also the first item under the 4-H tab on our new home page:

https://monroe.extension.wisc.edu • Two advantages of the new system are the photos upload right into the form and this

year you will receive a verification email that shows the information you entered into the system. You can still download a PDF of your entry as well once you submit the infor-mation.

• PAPER: Since some steers may not be very tame and easy to approach yet, making it difficult to get acceptable pictures taken, we will accept a paper copy of the ID form with correct signatures from a club leader to verify the animal has been properly tagged and described on the form. If you do use this method, please keep bio-security in mind.

What you'll need:

• White glue (Elmer’s works best, preferably not a new/full bottle)

• A plastic spoon or stick

• Glitter

• Blue construction paper

• Box lid (shirt boxes are perfect for this)

How to make your icicle craft

1. Add a little bit of water to a bottle of white glue. It is nearly impossible to mix in a new bottle of glue, so using a half full bottle is the best way to go. Stir the glue & water pretty well and check to see that it is able to easily run off the end of the spoon. Put the lid back on the glue bottle.

2. Place a piece of blue construction paper into the box lid.

3. Lean the box lid against something so that it is at an angle. You need gravity for this to have the right effect!

4. Have your child squeeze the glue generously in a relatively straight line across the top of the paper and watch the glue drip down to form icicles. They can add a little extra glue to make some of the drips longer if they want. There is no right or wrong to this craft, so have fun experimenting!

5. Once the drips are where they want them to be, lay the box lid flat and let them sprinkle a generous amount of glitter onto the glue. It looks best if the glue is covered with glitter. We used silver and iridescent.

Once the glue dries, the glittery icicles will be left behind.

Volunteer for 4-H In Monroe County

Volunteers help make 4-H possible.

In order to volunteer, previous 4-H Youth Development

experience is not necessary. The most important

qualification is a desire to work with young people,

helping them gain life skills and providing them positive

experiences. Please consider sharing your time and

talents!

All adult volunteers 18 and older are required to

complete the Volunteers in Preparation (VIP) program,

which includes:

• a national level background check for arrest and

conviction records. This is handled by UW Madison

Staff using a third party vendor.

• participation in the Volunteers in Preparation Training.

These two-hour trainings are offered in Monroe

County through February. See schedule below.

• annually signing the Extension Volunteer Behavior

Expectations. This is part of the 4-H Online

enrollment process each year.

• completing the Mandated Reporter Training. This is

also part of the 4-H Online system as a training.

If you would like to volunteer and have questions talk to

the Extension Office. The number is 608-269-8722 or

email [email protected] or talk to club leaders.

Volunteers in Preparation (VIP) Training

Dog Project Kick Off Let’s kickoff of the 2020 4-H dog project! We are holding a Dog Project Kick Off on March 15 at Rolling Hills. The meeting

will run 6:30 to 8 pm. Be ready to discuss the spring training

schedule. Locations will also be discussed. Plans for Agility practice will start too.

Last year there was interest in doing dog bowl so that discussion will be held that evening as well. No dogs at this meeting,

but spring will be here soon and it will be time to train the pups.

Hope to see many dog lovers in the

2020 season.

Mark your Calendars: Camp Counselor Training in 2020!

March 28-29, 2020 & April 25-26, 2020 & May 2-3, 2020 Camp Counselor training is an excellent opportunity for counselors, adult volunteers, and 4-H staff alike to come together to prepare youth to excel in their summer camp counselor role. This weekend is offered to both beginning and experienced counselors, adult volunteers, and 4-H staff. Counselors will participate in training that builds confidence and provides youth development strategies to be successful with campers. Note: All Open Enrollment Camp Counselors are required to attend a camp counselor training session. Potential counselors should select which weekend works better for them. Cost per counselor will be covered by Monroe County 4-H, which includes lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. There are options to arrive at Upham Woods on Friday night; we will provide a continental breakfast on Saturday morning. Check in begins at 9:15am on the Saturdays for participants and adult chaperones. Participants and adult chaperones will stay in cabins on Saturday night Training activities will take place all day Saturday, into the evening, through Sunday afternoon, with a closing ceremony at 1:30 pm. Are you an adult leader or experienced counselor interested in presenting at Counselor Training! Please let us know!
