Royal Commission announces a community forum in South Australia The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety has announced details of a Community Forum to take place in Adelaide. The Royal Commission wants to hear from the Australian community about their experiences of and ideas about aged care. In addition to submissions and hearings, the Commission is undertaking a series of community forums, roundtable meetings with experts, and service provider visits during the course of its inquiry into aged care delivery in Australia. The Royal Commission Community Forums are an opportunity for members of the local community to hear about the work of the Royal Commission and to offer ideas on the challenges, strengths and opportunities to improve aged care. The Forum will take place from 1.30 to 4pm on Monday 12 August 2019, at the Auditorium, Adelaide Town Hall,128 King William Street, Adelaide SA 5000. Commissioner, The Honourable Richard Tracey AM RFD QC will attend. A community forum is being held today in Townsville. Further details of all forums are available on the website. Members of the public can register for free to attend the forums, where a limited number will be able to make a brief statement. Media are welcome to attend the community forums but only as observers. Opening remarks only can be filmed. There is to be no other audio or video recording, no photography and no questions during the forum. Also, we ask media to not quote directly or identify members of the public who speak at the forum. Media are free to approach speakers outside the forum. We request that media observe these requirements so that members of the public feel they can speak freely during the forum. South Australian Government Media Release – State Government Grants of up to $100,000 The Honourable Michelle Lensink MLC, Minister for Human Services released a statement on the 18 July indicating that the State Government Grants SA program is now open, with $3 million in grants available to organisations across South Australia. Minister Lensink is encouraging eligible non-for-profit organisations to apply for a grant. “I’m pleased to announce applications are now open for the first round of grants between $10,000 and $100,000 and I urge organisations to apply,” said Minister Lensink.

“These grants will go a long way in helping our deserving community organisations right across South Australia, including our regions. “Priority will be given to grant applications that support the prevention of domestic, family and sexual violence, increase disability inclusion, address the cost of living or support innovation in South Australia. “Grant applications can be made for equipment, community activities, one-off programs or services, upgrades to community facilities, activities to recruit or retain volunteers or provide learning and skill development opportunities for volunteers.” On 1 August 2019, grant applications will open for the first round of minor grants valued between $100 - $10,000 to fund smaller projects and activities and these can be submitted until 30 September 2019. A full copy of the media release can be found here South Australian Government Media Release – Landmark agreement to improve patient services The Honourable Stephen Wade MLC, Minister for Health and Wellbeing released a statement on the 23 July indicating that a landmark agreement between SA Health and 13 health providers is set to improve access to patient services and revolutionise the management of hospital demand. Minister Wade said a new Patient Services Panel has been established which will allow public patients to access services they need earlier at private facilities, resulting in reduced waiting times for elective procedures and increased capacity in our public hospitals. “Public and private hospitals have always worked together, however this has traditionally been done on an ad-hoc, non-strategic basis,” Minister Wade said. “This new agreement allows for better planning and a more streamlined coordination of services to minimise delays for surgery. “The 13 private providers include day and overnight hospitals which will primarily assist with providing hospital services such as elective surgery and rehabilitation, but also support during emergencies or major incidents. “SA Health will manage the panel, which ensures the buying power of every taxpayer dollar is maximised. “We are better coordinating and better utilising South Australia’s health services to ease pressure on our hospitals and better support the health and wellbeing of all South Australians.” Chief Executive of SA Health, Dr Chris McGowan, said the agreement will provide a better, more efficient approach to managing waiting times for surgery, peak demand periods, and assistance in the event of a major incident. “With this multi-million dollar agreement in place, we will be able to provide a better service for our patients while reducing red tape for our local health networks and help them better manage demand.

“It will also ensure we have a clear understanding of what services the private system can provide and how many patients they can care for. We anticipate cooperation will result in a reduction in elective surgery wait times and access to more timely care. “This landmark agreement is another step towards improving South Australia’s health services to ease pressure on our emergency departments and deliver care closer to home.” The agreement is for an initial period of four years, with the option of a further four, pending the success of the first phase. Call for people over the age of 55 interested in sharing their views on housing!

A new Housing and Homelessness Strategy is being developed and will provide an opportunity to reform the housing and homelessness system in South Australia over the next 10 years.

The South Australian Housing Authority (SAHA) is undertaking extensive engagement to ensure that the voices of as many South Australians as possible – from a wide range of perspectives – are considered in the development of the new strategy.

As part of the engagement process, the Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) will conduct several ‘Lived Experience’ workshops with different cohorts. The workshops aim to give voice to people with lived experience to assist in the development of housing and homelessness reforms.

We are seeking people over the age of 55 who are currently or were previously experiencing housing challenges (e.g. difficulty paying mortgage repayments or finding/paying for private rental) or lacking security of tenure.

Workshops will be held on Friday 2 August, 10am -1pm and Friday 9 August, 10am -1pm in a convenient city location. Participants must be able to attend both workshops.

Workshops will be informal and relaxed – there are no right or wrong answers. All information shared during the group is confidential and will remain anonymous.

To thank participants for their time, they will receive a $60 Coles Myer voucher at each workshop.

Please email details of relevant and interested people by COB Monday 29 July to Maryke van Diermen.

Please check that the person is interested and able to attend prior to emailing their details. We would appreciate if you could include the person’s full name, contact details and some information about them i.e. age, ethnicity and current housing status – to enable diversity of participation. There are limited spots available in the workshops.

You can find more information on the new strategy at www.yourSAy.sa.gov.au.

We appreciate your help.

If you have questions relating to the event, please email or call Maryke van Diermen at [email protected] or (08) 8413 8160.

27 August – If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen! Date: 27 August 2019 Time: 9.00 am to 1.00 pm Location: Building 3 Level 1, 32-56 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Mile End SA 5031 Price: Members: $195.00, Non Members: $225 This program has been written for a diverse audience from carers through to service managers and everyone in-between! Good client documentation is essential for numerous reasons, the most important being the provision of the best possible care and support. When something goes wrong or when a case conference is scheduled with the client and their loved ones, ensuring you have well written evidence to back up any claims, actions or outcomes is essential. As aged care services continue to transition to customer directed care, documentation and its quality will improve communication across multi-disciplinary teams, demonstrate quality and reduce risk. This interactive workshop will explore legislation, quality standards and professional practice that impact on documentation in community services and provide practical examples of strategies to ensure documentation is defensible. Current issues such as the Aged Care Quality Standards, Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI), Consumer Directed Care, together with real examples from the Royal Commission and Coronial Inquests are used to reinforce the need to document effectively and what can happen when documentation isn’t up to scratch. The workshop will also focus on Complaints and Customer Feedback and appropriately managing Workplace Incidents and Investigation. The program has been written for a diverse audience from carers through to service managers and everyone in-between. Click here to register

29 August – Reablement, Recovery & Independence Date: 29 August 2019 Time: 9.30 am to 12.30 pm Location: Building 3 Level 1, 32-56 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Mile End SA 5031 Price: Free of charge to CHSP providers Older people are too often seen and known only by their deficits – what they can’t do and the assumptions we make about the limitations negatively impact the person. This impairs people’s ability to recover from a set back and reach their desired independence. Interactive and thought-provoking, this 3 hour session is a journey of understanding the motivation for people to build their capacity to recover from the impacts of setbacks and health challenges and reach greater independence in their lives. Participants will engage in a range of activities and explore the concepts of independence and the skills and attributes that promote independence. You will also gain new insights and strategies to support older people by understanding:

• The purpose of independence as an overarching goal or outcome. • The recovery approach, where a person is supported, connected, motivated in building their capacity

to engage in their version of the “good life”. • Reablement as enabling approach, beyond the formal service requirements.
