Special Days in July: Fourth of July
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Ernest Hemingway chose a lifestyle and a career that resulted in his becoming one of the most influential and recognized authors of the 20th Century.
After high school, he worked as a reporter for six months. However, Ernest heeded the call to adventure.
The Army rejected him because of a sight problem so he joined the Red Cross medical service driving an ambulance on the Italian

front until he was wounded by shrapnal. In the hospital he met nurse Agnes von Kurowsky, and it was their affair that became the basis for one of his greatest works, A Farewell to Arms.
After the war he went to work for the Toronto Star Weekly, which sent he and his bride to Paris, France in December 1921 as their European Correspondent. It was there he wrote The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and his only play, The Fifth Column.
After three failed marriages, he married Mary Walsh, a woman he met in Europe and they remained married until his death. He died in his home in Ketchum, Idaho, from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head, just days before his 62nd birthday.
The Old Man and the Sea, a novella, is considered his masterpiece for which he was awarded the Purlitzer Prize in 1954.

Edna Carroll (#1109)
Edna, one of three West Texas sisters, spent her adult life operating the family business - cotton farms & cotton gins. She lived in Longview prior to coming to The Village. Her son-in-law had accepted a teaching position with Baylor so she came too!
Edna likes to play 42/84 as all Texans do. She’s too

So, let’s start having our Saturday Morning Coffee out on the Village patio again. Take in some fresh air and visit with friends at the same time. Sound like fun? Remember, every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. BE THERE!
Joe & Patty Biederman (#2115)

He has enjoyed wood working since the 7th grade and only stopped making replica furniture when his eyesight failed.
Patty was a photograph retoucher, adn loves to paint

Twenty-one years ago, Patty’s first husband died, as did Joe’s wife. Since they had been good friends all those years throughout WWII and afterward, they married and moved to Waco.
They have a blended family: two sons each - Patty’s sons live in Waco, while Joe’s live in Minnesota. They are an interesting couple - get acquaninted with them!

Beginning on July 7th, Megan Williams will be giving a nutritional information class each Thursday for 4 weeks in St. Elizabeth library at 2:30 pm. These classes will cover such things as Heart Healthy eating, Diabetes lifestyle changes information, Diet and weight control, etc.
Nutrition Classes Scheduled for July
On Saturday, July 16th, beginning at 9 am, Mandy Sharp will be in the Village Activity Room to do makeovers for the ladies of The Village and St. Elizabeth Center. Mandy is the Community Liaison for Providence and is a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant as well. There is a sign up sheet at the Village Activity table for anyone who is interested in taking part in the free event. There will be no pressure to buy product, so come down and take advantage of some good skin care instruction and leave looking and feeling beautiful!
Mary Kay Makeovers Come to Providence Park!
These meetings should be very informative and fun! Megan is going to school to become a clinical dietician and working on her community service hours with us. So come on down and listen to what she has to say. You might learn something new about what’s good for you or what is not....
On July 5th and July 19th, computer technicians from Goodwill Industries will be here to help residents with any questions they may have about their computers, cell phones, IPods, etc. They will be in the game room on the second floor of the Village from 1 pm to 3 pm. We will have sign up sheets on the activity table for residents to sign up on for these classes. They wil also be able to help you learn how to operate a computer if you haven’t done so and send and receive emails. So come on down and sign up!
Computer Technology Classes to Begin
BBQ Round up!With this being the 4th of July month, it’s quite fitting that we take a trip to get some good Bar-B-Que to eat. So, we will be going to the Rusty Star on July 8th. The Rusty Star was given a 5 star review and featured on the Travel Channel on the Anthony Bourdain Show! He said it was amazing, especially the ribs! On the 22nd of July, we will be taking a return trip to Marlin, TX to Sisters’ restaurant. They serve good ole’ down home cookin’ with pork chops, meat loaf and chicken fried steaks as their specialties. You’d better bring a big appetite with you if you go, because their portions are huge. They do have doggie boxes though, so hop on the bus and join us for some good food, fellowship, fun and sight seeing along the way.
The Providence Park Choir will be performing twice this month.
One performance will be at the Quarterly Memorial Service at 2:30 pm in the Christus Chapel on Thursday, July 28. They will be singing “Cornerstone,” a very beautiful piece written by Lari Goss. They have been working very hard to make this song very special for you! The memorial service is in honor of those who passed away during the months of April, May and June this year at Providence Park.
The choir has also been asked to re-perform their “Sister Act” for the 4th floor residents on July 19th at 3:30 pm If you did not catch this performance the first time or would like to see it again, please feel free to travel to St. Catherine Cen-ter on the 19th to catch this comical performance by our very own choir. You’ll love it!

Photography Club in the Works! If you have a digital camera, a disposable camera, an old or new camera, let’s pull them out and start using them! We will be getting a new van to travel in hopefully sometime in July for the Village and St. Elizabeth Place. This would be a great opportunity for our residents to get
out and take excursions to photograph different things and happenings around town or out of town. We could have showings of a particular kind of photography each month. We might even end up with one that makes us famous, who knows.... dream big!
WII Game Catching on BigIf you pass by the Village Fitness center on any given Thursday around 1 pm, you might want to be prepared to hear some loud noises coming from the residents playing the Wii game. We have some very competitive players here at Providence
Park, some of which can bowl in the high 200 range! If you haven’t taken ad-vantage of playing this fun game, come on down and try it -- there’s always room for more and the players will be glad to help you learn how to play.
