The Newcomers Club of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel
NEWSLETTER
January, 2012
Happy New Year Newcomers!
I’m looking forward to a great 2012 with the Newcomers. We had a
fantastic end to 2011 with our Holiday Party at
Pier 77. 75 members enjoyed a wonderful venue,
tasty dinner, and fun with friends and neighbors.
A big thank you to the Social Committee and
especially Marie Ali-Hassan for planning the
event.
Speaking of Social Committee events, mark
February 11th on your calendar. Grab your partner and
join us at River Tree Arts for our first hoedown! Also, we
already have many reservations for the Theater night on
January 28th. Please see the information in this Newsletter and
make your reservations as soon as possible.
The Board will meet on January 25th and will be appointing a Nominating
Committee for the 2012 – 2013 season. It’s that time again! Please email me
at [email protected] if you are interested in either serving on the
committee or are interested in being nominated for a position next year.
The dedicated participation of our members is what makes our club vital and
fun.
“Safe Travels” to those members heading to the warm climates. We’ll see
you in the Spring! For those of us staying, we have many events planned for
the winter. Post the calendar at the end of this Newsletter so you don’t
miss a minute. Donna Murphy

NEXT MEETING
January Meeting – January 5th - 7PM Community House Our speaker for January Newcomers club will be Bob Haskell ,director of Kennebunkport Conservation Trust
Island Steward Program, with the slideshow presentation "Exploring Your Own Back Door". We as Americans are fortunate to find outdoor recreational opportunities close to home. People are enjoying the
outdoors in many different ways exploring by foot, snowshoes, skis, canoe, kayak, and bicycles just to mention a few. Living in Maine provides us with boundless activities to explore the outdoors, and its rich heritage. We do not have to travel hundreds of miles to seek out these adventures, so let's explore a few
opportunities just a skip or a jaunt away from our own back doors.

Theater Group: January -
The theatre group invites everyone to join them in their first theatre outing on Saturday, January
28th at 4:00 (matinee) at The Portland
Stage. The play is entitled, Trouble is
my Business, adapted by James Glossman. The 1930's atmosphere, and trademark narrative style of L.A.'s most famous detective come to life in this world premiere adaption of two of Chandler's Philip Marlowe short stories. From seedy side streets to elegant Hollywood mansions, Marlowe must stay focused on solving the case through run-ins with sinister thugs, high rollers, crooked cops, and femme-fatales in this quintessential jazz-age thriller.
To attend you need to purchase tickets on-line, by phone (774-0465), or in person 25A Forest Ave.. Tickets are $39.00 with a 3.00 discount for 65 or older. There are seats available now in both the left and right sections. Once you've purchased your ticket, please let the Branchinas know ([email protected] or 985-0368). Also let them know if you definitely plan on going to dinner with the group afterwards. There will be more on restaurants later. April - The Theater Group's second outing will be on Sunday, April 1st at 2
pm at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre
in Portsmouth, NH to see Ain't
Misbehavin'. The outrageously prodigious comic and musical soul of the 1930s Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, finger-snapping revue that is

still considered one of Broadway's best. The inimitable Thomas "Fats" Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lenox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and the jumpin' new beat, Swing. Although not quite a biography, Ain't Bisbehavin' evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast strut, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a
career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in U.S., Canada and Europe. All members are invited to purchase their own tickets separately. Ticket Prices $20 to $42 Available after January 1st at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre, 125 Bow Street, Portsmouth, NH. Suggested restaurants in the area will follow after the first of the year.
