For the Congregation

From the Desk of our President, Steve Schuldenfrei

I've got a lot of people to thank...

To everyone who attended the Annual Meeting on May 9th or who sent in your ballot... thank you for participating and adding your voice to the Or Chadash governance. Many points were expressed and well taken. Your synagogue could not exist without your input and contribution. Everyone's suggestions will be carefully considered. Thank you.

Being on a Board, any Board, not just ours, is sometimes thought of as a "thankless job". Many Board members are not recognized or celebrated for their efforts or contributions. I'm here to contradict that myth, and I hope you will too. A very special and heartfelt thank you goes to Amy Kublin, Sandi Levkowitz, Elaine Nathanson, and David Weintraub, who are ending their service to you on the Board of Directors effective June 30. I appreciate your many contributions to our congregation.

Joining the Board... thanks to your vote... are Gerry Tumarkin, Andrea Davis, Sheldon Clare, Marcia Klotz, Terri Freed, Elaine Jones, and Sarah Chen. Continuing their terms on the Board are Amelia Cramer (as First Vice President), Ben Vogel (as Vice President), Scott Krasner (as Immediate Past President), Paul Bartlett and Aaron Fisher (as Board Directors). Welcome to all of you.

And I cannot forget how important and hard working your staff is. The Board and the congregation thank you as well. We appreciate all the hard work and long hours you put in that keeps Or Chadash looking like an effortless, well-oiled machine. I send our appreciation to Eileen Cook, Sarah Bollt, Jeff Kaufman, and Jim Liebeskind! And, of course, we couldn't forget to thank Rabbi Louchheim, Cantor Cohen, and Rina Liebeskind for leading us forward.

Of course we need to thank the committee chairs and all the volunteers who have put in so much time and effort of this past year. We can't list them all here, but you know who they are.

Thank you all!

I also want to take a moment to thank you for agreeing with the over 200 changes to the Bylaws. As you saw at the Annual Meeting, our governing document had become badly corrupted over the years. It took the Executive Committee with Emily Joseph many, many meetings and debates to get the document into its slimmed down, easier to read practical document. Only one of the proposed changes (the indemnifica-tion paragraph) needed to go back for clarification and revision. Everything else passed either unanimously or by a wide margin. Thank you for approving all the changes and corrections.

Living Judaism and especially Congregation Or Chadash is a vibrant community, a participatory activity, and a way of life. There is always something you can do, so please join in. Partake in activities. Join a com-mittee. Get involved. Reward yourself by doing so. And have a great summer. Steve Schuldenfrei, President

Religious School

Help Our Children Receive a Good Jewish Education

A few years ago, the congregation Board of Directors established the ABT Scholarship Fund to ensure that Jewish education is available for all children K through 8th grade in our Religious School. This Fund truly helps in supplementing Religious School tuition for many families. There is a growing demand for financial aid, and the ABT Fund is not expanding at the same rate as the need for it. We pride ourselves for not turning anyone away for financial reasons, but that means that there is a strain on our budget.

This year, as you fill out your Membership Dues Form, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the ABT Fund to help kids receive a Jewish education at our newly accredited Religious School. No amount is too small, and doing it is a Mitzvah (a good deed) that will make a difference in a child’s life.

Summer Brain Drain?

Summer time is fun and exciting, but it can also cause a "brain drain" if we do not practice and use certain skills. This is especially true when applied to a second language (which, even dur-ing the school year, is only being practiced about 2 hours per week at best).

For that reason, we recommend that students practice at home with the prayer CD that they received from teachers. A few minutes each week will ensure your students are keeping up with their Hebrew Skills. Please contact Rina Liebeskind at 900-7030 if you need additional copies.

Religious School Registration and Tuition Fees

Thank you to those of you who took advantage of our Early Bird Registration in the early spring. Mem-bership and tuition billings will be mailed shortly. Please be sure to take care of dues and Religious School fees prior to the beginning of the school year. If for some reason you did not receive your packet, please contact us as soon as possible.

For those seeking financial assistance through our ABT Scholarship Fund, applications can be obtained from the Religious School Office and must be turned in prior to June 30.
