The Nazi Roots Of The Middle East’s Anti-Semitism

The cartoons on the following pages show the direct parallels between Nazi propaganda and modern Middle Eastern images of Jews and Israelis.

These parallels did not occur by chance. The Nazis directly influenced Middle Eastern attitudes.

In the 1930s, the Nazis injected demonizing, genocidal themes into the Middle East’s long tradition of anti-Jewish stereotypes. They funded Egypt’s emerging fundamental-ist mass movement, the Muslim Brotherhood. Palestinian leader Haj Amin al-Husseini joined the Nazis and ran the regular Nazi radio broadcasts of anti-Semitic propaganda to the Arabic-speaking world.1 After World War II, Haj Amin al-Husseini escaped trial for Nazi war crimes and was greeted as a hero throughout the Middle East. Thou-sands of former Nazis fled prosecution and took leading positions in Arab govern-ments’ propaganda and “information” offices.2

This legacy grew as Israel flourished. Today, the Nazi mixture of medieval and mod-ern anti-Semitic images–and the depiction of Jews as a diabolic world force intent on global domination–pervade the Middle East.

History has shown that this anti-Semitic obsession is self-destructive for the society that generates it and for its target. It is a precursor to genocide.

While the anti-Semitic images and themes may seem too preposterous to be taken seriously, they have deadly power.

“At first the claims of the propaganda were so impudent that people thought it insane; later it got on people’s nerves; and in the end, it was believed.” -Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf 3
