THE MYTHOLOGY AND FANTASY IN THE WORK OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN

    “THE LORD OF THE RINGS”

    “Foreign languages” department. Teacher

Abstract: This article explores the mythology and fantasy of a particularly noticeable part

of J.R.R. Tolkien's famous work The Lord of the Rings, namely the many instances of linguistic

styles which are to be found in it. The article is simply that the many instances and various kinds of

rhymed and metrical language are more than ends in them, and much more than generally

ignorable impediments to the narratives. They serve to enrich the work in many ways: they amplify,

emphasize or remind us of central themes in the mythology and fantasy.

Key words: mythology, fantasy, saga, elf, folktales, imaginary world, anthropogenic,

    cosmogonic myths, magic

It is difficult to give an exact figure today, but according to some sources, by the

end of the 20th century, more than 50 million copies of The Lord of the Rings were sold,

and the book became one of the best-selling in the century. Approximately 30 million

copies of The Hobbit and more than two million posthumously published The Silmarillion

should be added here. Tolkien's works have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Moreover, in England, for example, Tolkien’s books are taken in libraries 200,000 times a

year, which exceeds the popularity of such “classical” authors as Shakespeare. According

to Ms. Djellab Samira The Lord of the Rings is often considered as trilogy. Indeed, this saga

is divided into three parts: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the

King. It is worth mentioning, however, that each part consists of two books. Hence, The

Lord of the Rings saga is made up of six books. Despite of being written between 1937 and

1949, it was until the years of 1954 and 1955 that the three volumes of this epic fantasy

saga were published. Since that, the novel is rating the bestselling book ever written.

Between 2001 and 2003, Peter Jackson, a New Zealand film producer, screen writer and

director, realized the most successful adaptation of the novel in three movies under the

same titles of its volumes. Thus, The Lord of the Rings is the most known high fantasy story,

and the most academically awarded for the both saga novels and films. [1]

The word fantasy means “the forming of mental images, especially wondrous or

strange fancies” (“Fantasy”). Therefore, fantasy literature is that genre which depends, at

its core, on fiction and imagination in the formation of the stories and tales. Fantasy is a

form of literary genre in which a plot cannot occur in the real world. Its plot usually

involves witchcraft or magic, taking place on undiscovered planet of an unknown world.

Its overall theme and setting involve a combination of technology, architecture and

language, which sometimes resemble European medieval ages. The most interesting about

fantasies is that their plot involves witches, sorcerers, mythical and animal creatures

talking like humans, and other things that never happen in real life. [1]

The literary genre of fantasy is divided into law and high fantasy. The story of law

fantasy is written in realistic fiction. Even though the characters and the plot are

extraordinary and strange, but the realm of the story takes place in our recognizable

world. Thus, it is somehow related to reality and close to be believable. However, high

fantasy is that kind of narration about another imaginary world, impossible plot and

inhuman characteristics. It is quite important to mention that fantasy fiction is discernible

for its diversity of subgenres. They are classified according to their form and matter. That

is to say, fantasy as a genre can be represented in many forms such as novel, poetry or

drama. However, in terms of matter it is classified regarding the style of the narration and

the theme; thus, fantasy story can be a gothic narrative, a fairy tale, a romantic legend and

    so on.

The roots of fantasy literature are back to the old oral traditions. It is also inspired

by legends, folktales and myths. Those early narratives have got their identity through

fairy tales and fables such as The Beauty and the Beast, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The

Little Glass Slipper or Cinderella. However, it is until the mid of the twentieth century that

fantasy have been considered as a literary genre and achieved a large audience. The

fantasy novel knew a great fame and was well spread in the post modern era, through

marked works such as: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The

Earthsea, A Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter.[1]

Fantasy is well known for the use of mythical creatures and wise characters; while

the hero is usually young and innocent, he has a will to protect his nation or to save

humanity. The conflicts are often resolved by the good deeds of the characters through

defeating the evil. They use magic and supernatural powers to achieve what is extremely

impossible. The story as whole reflects the basic values shared generally by all the cultures

in all over the world. Accordingly, its themes are, above all, about right and wrong, justice

    and injustice.

Tolkien’s myth is built in accordance with the basic mythological principles of

nature conformity (internal consistency and integrity with its own logic of development)

and syncretism (Tolkien’s work is endowed with secondary syncretism) Like the classic

myth, the writer’s myth performs the function of explaining the world. He explains two

worlds on the one hand, the one what is described in the epic, on the other hand, is our

modern world of Tolkien, exposing his vices and showing the ways of salvation.[2]

Tolkien’s myth combines the features of cosmogonic myths (the emergence of the

world of Arda and its elements), etiological (the appearance of various natural and

cultural features and social objects of the world of Arda), anthropogenic (about the origin

of not only humans, but also elves, orcs, etc.), astral (solar - about Anar and lunar - about

Itil Shining), totemic (about the relationship of people, animals and plants), heroic (about

the fallen heroes Fingolfin, Turin Turambar, Beren and many others) and eschatological

(about the change of the epochs of the Primary, Second and Third, and the occurrence of

the fourth - the Age of Man) In this case, a special place in the writer takes Norse

mythology, the object of his professional interest and the love of his life. In addition, one of

the most mystical themes of the classical myth, the problem of death and immortality, is

presented in its own way in Tolkien's work. The author complicates it by populating the

world with people who are mortal and elves that live forever. The writer is interested, first

of all, in the riddle of love for the world in the hearts of those born to lose it, and the

suffering in the hearts of those born to stay in this world until its struggle is over, the

passionate desire to receive from the world the best of some and the all-consuming love-

care of others Fatigue from centuries gone by turns into an unbearable burden for elves,

their weakness in attachment to the past and in fear of change. People are in a hurry to live

and long for change, this is their strength, and therefore at a crucial moment it is mortals

who become the arbiters of the fate of the world.[2]

An example of the mythological plot used by Tolkien can be the story of Numenor,

reminiscent of the famous mythological story about Atlantis. It became the gift that people

who fought during the war on the side of the elves received these people. They possessed

many wonderful qualities, but they succumbed to the deception of Sauron and stood on

side of evil. As a result, the valar sent a huge wave that washed away their island and sank

warships. Only a few managed to reach Middle-earth, where they founded Gondor.

The heroes of mythology are gods, spirits and first ancestors. Tolkien had Eru

Iluwatar in the beginning, the One He created the valar (“higher forces” translated from

  • НамДУ илмий ахборотномаси - Научный вестник НамГУ 2020 йил 1-сон

    246

Quenya) Each of the valars has its own “specialization” Manve represents the element of

air and commands the birds, his wife Varda - the mistress of the stars, who knows all the

corners of Ea, Ulmo - the sea king, Aule owns all the substances of which Arda is created,

he is a blacksmith and expert on all crafts, etc. All this causes direct associations with the

pantheon of ancient gods or gods of Scandinavia.

The lower mythology of the Germanic peoples is represented primarily by elves in

Tolkien. In the mythological tradition, elves are spirits of air, atmosphere, and beautiful

little men in flower hats. These are exactly the way they are depicted on the pages of

Shakespeare’s writings. Tolkien’s elves are completely different. the proud race of the

Firstborn, the Elder People, warriors and sages, the immortal people of stars, bearers of

eternal wisdom and knowledge of the world. To emphasize the difference between their

elves and traditional ones, the professor uses instead of general taken adjectives elfish or

elfin from the noun "elf" the words elvish and elven Elves for Tolkien - a reflection of one

of the aspects of human nature, the embodiment of its moral, aesthetic manifestation,

desire for Knowledge. Another representative of lower mythology - gnomes - lives in

Tolkien's world. In the mythological tradition, gnomes are anthropomorphic creatures that

live underground, in the mountains or in the forest. They are growth from a child or

finger, but endowed with supernatural power. They are skilled craftsmen, can forge magic

rings. , Tolkien’s swords, etc. Dwarfs are quite good-natured, live in the mountains, where

they find underground treasures. Men are all with beards and carry battle axes. The main

feature of Tolkien’s dwarves is the thirst for wealth that has been in them since the

creation of the world. Distinguished from the classic gnomes, they are friendly and non-

aggressive. Tolkien creatively borrows some mythological images So, for example, the

image of Galadriel, which protects the elf cloister Kvetlorien, is closely connected with the

image of mother earth. This image is present in almost all mythologies (Isis, Ishtar, Gaia,

Hera, Ceres, etc.). At the same time, it is Galadriel who is able to show vague visions of the

future. In ancient mythology, women who are closer to nature usually possess the gift of

    prophecy.[5]

Tolkien is particularly active in using mythological symbolism. This is, first of all,

the Peace Tree, a symbol typical of mythopoietic consciousness, embodying the universal

concept of the world. The image of the Peace Tree has been witnessed in almost all

mythologies, either by itself or in variants - the tree of life, the tree of fertility, the tree of

the center, Tolkien’s tree of ascension, etc. This idea is embodied in the White Tree of Life,

which becomes the symbol of Gondor. It perishes in the fire, dries in the year of the

terrible plague, but every time it is reborn, personifying in Good and Life.

Another mythological symbol used by Tolkien is the Crimson Eye of Sauron. In

traditional myths, the eye is a symbol of magical power, thanks to which a deity or

mythoepic character has the ability to see, while remaining invisible themselves. This is

the main function of the Crimson Eye in the epic. However, the Eye evokes other

associations. It is directly related to the central image of Scandinavian myths - the one-

eyed Odin, who gave his eye in exchange for permission to drink from the source of world

    wisdom.

    247

Tolkien’s epic has a number of other mythological symbols (the magic number

“nine”, the Galadriel’s mirror, which acts as an oracle, symbolic comprehension of the

cardinal points, etc.) Tolkien has his own Styx, the Last Harbor of the Elves, from where

the ship carries its passengers to the shores of Valinor. way to the Immortal Territory,

which, according to mythological tradition, is located across the ocean, where the sunset

    indicates

However, in the center of the story, the Ring - a symbol of power. The ring - is

eternity, unity, wholeness, power, authority. In ancient legends, the ring was often

associated with magical powers or hidden treasures. The ring was the key to the power of

the Nibelungs. The rejection of the Siegfried and Brünnhilde Ring symbolizes their

renunciation of power and deliverance of the world from great adversity Tolkien’s Ring

binds and subjugates, deprives a person of his will and self-consciousness. Testing with

the Ring becomes Tolkien’s moral test, to which more or less the writer’s individual

characters To resist the Ring is given to few The ring represents the moral aspect - a

    specific feature of Tolkien’s mythology

In his epic, Tolkien skillfully uses the binary of mythological logic, building

semantic oppositions (fair-skinned - positive heroes elves, for example, dark-skinned -

negative-orcs or aliens from the east), spatio-temporal (bright earthly natural world and

    underground horror) and social oppositions
