THE MYSTERY OF
STORYTELLING
STORIES ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR LIVES
Storytelling is considered an art….but there is much more
to it than meets the eye
Millions line up every year at reputed publishing houses to have their stories read and ,hopefully, published
HOW MANY MAKE THE CUT?
Accepted Rejected
1 Out of every 1000 aspirants
EXACTLY
So let’s
get down
to it…
What
makes a
good
story?
Most writers make the mistake of obsessively indulging their characters
At the cost of their audiences
I used to be
alive…..then I
started reading
this book.
As a result, your audience turns on you
ON THE OTHER HAND THERE ARE A GOOD NUMBER OF WRITERS WHO HAVE WOOED THEIR AUDIENCES AND HAVE A CULT FOLLOWING
AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS…
So how do you go from killing your audience to thrilling them?
SO…YOU
WANNA
KNOW THE
SECRET?
THE SECRET TO BEING SUCCESSFUL IS BEING INFIDEL…………TOWARDS YOUR CHARACTERS.
INSTEAD THE RELATION WITH THE READER NEEDS TO BE FIRMLY
ESTABLISHED
THEY NEED TO BE ENTERTAINED
SO WHAT’S THE FORMULA TO ESTABLISHING A REALTIONSHIP WITH THE READERS?
2500 years ago Aristotle
described the formula for
writing a good story with 3
simple words
PITY
FEAR
CATHARSIS
PITY
THIS IS THE FEELING OF EMPATHY
FOR THE CHARACTER / THE
FEELING OF BEING ABLE TO
RELATE TO HIS SITUATION.IT IS
ACHIEVED BY PUTTING THE
CHARACTER THROUGH SOME
UNDESERVED MISFORTUNE. Aww shucks!
He's got a jerk of an
elder brother as well
FEAR
THIS IS THE FEELING OF FEAR FOR THE
CHARACTER IN THE AUDIENCE WHICH
ORIGINATES DUE TO THE EMOTIONAL
CONNECT ESTABLISHED WITH HIM BY
THE FEELING OF PITY.IT IS USUALLY
ACHIEVED BY PLUNGING HIM INTO
FURTHER MISTORTUNE.
No no you idiot!!..Don’t
open the box.That
horrible brother of yours put a spider in there
CATHARSIS
THIS THE FEELING OF EMOTIONAL
RELEASE EXPERIENCED BY THE
AUDIENCE WHEN THE CHARACTER IS
PURGED OF HIS SITUATION AND
REALEASED FROM JEOPARDY.Haha…jerk’s been grounded for a month!!..Now
that li’l brother of his can finally use the PlayStation as much as he wants
Beethoven used almost the same 3 steps in his compositions to move his audience
Suffering
Struggle
Overcoming
So now we know….there IS
a formula…
So why are
stories so
important
anyway?
STORIES HELP US REHEARSE OUR
EMOTIONS,WHICH ARE AN INTEGRAL
PART OF OUR LIVES
ANOTHER IMPORTANT
PART OF STORYTELLING IS
KNOWING WHAT IS
RELEVANT TO THE STORY
AND KEEPING IT TO JUST
THAT
FAILURE TO DO SO RESULTS IN
THIS
ANOTHER TRICK TO GET
THE AUDIENCE
HOOKED,ESPECIALLY IN
MOVIES,IS THE USE OF
BEAUTIFUL AND STRIKING
IMAGES
WE’RE ALL ABOUT
ACTION.WHO NEEDS
DIALOGUE?
AMERICAN FILMS
HAVE FAR MORE
IMAGERY AND
FAR LESS
DIALOGUES THAN
BRITSH MOVIES.
DAMN!!!IT’S LIKE
I’M IN THE MOVIE!! THIS HELPS
STIMULATE A
FEELING OF
AUDIENCE
PARTICIPATION AND
A GREATER
ENJOYMENT OF THE
MOVIE
IT IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY
AMERICAN MOVIES DO MUCH BETTER
AT THE BOX OFFICE THAN BRITISH
FILMS
SO TO RECAP….
A good story needs :
To emotionally connect with the
audience with PITY,FEAR and
CARTHASIS
To be RELEVANT in all its parts
