A BRIEF HISTORICAL OUTLINE

Zamość is a sixty-five-thousand town situated in the eastern part of Poland. The town is famous for its picturesque Renaissance Old Town, founded by Jan Zamoyski in 1580. It was designed and built according to Renaissance layout of an ideal town by Italian architect, Bernardo Morando. That is why our town is called by some as The Pearl of Renaissance or The Venice of the North.

It’s a state secondary school which was founded in 1921. It’s located at Lukasinskiego Street, in the very heart of Zamość – the Old Town surroundings.

The school consists of one building, where you can find caretaker’s office, the library, the teaching staff’s room, the Management Team’s offices and classrooms and IT and language laboratories on the ground floor and on the first floor. There is a sports court nearby the school as well.

STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF IN THE SCHOOL

The students have got class representatives, which make up the Student Council and there is a parent association called the Parents' Council.There are about 950 students, 75 teachers and 18 non-teaching staff in our school.There are 29 class groups. There are from 20 to 39 students in each class. We have from 15 to 17 school subjects every year. We also learn four foreign languages: English, German, Russian and French. We have from 5 to 8 lessons a day from Monday to Friday.

THE SCHOOL YEAR ORGANISATION

The school year starts on 1st September and finishes at the end of June. There are two terms in each year. We have got holidays at Christmas –about 10 days-, winter break–two weeks in January or February and summer break –2 months in July and August). We can pass to the next academic year when we pass all the subjects or when we fail only one or two subjects. We have another opportunity at the end of August if we have failed in June. Pupils have to repeat the same academic year when they fail more than two subjects.

THE SCHOOL GRADUATES

When we pass fourth year of our school, we get the Secondary Education Certificate - Matura- the common name for the high-school exit exam. It is taken by young adults (usually aged from 18 to 20) at the end of their secondary education, and generally must be passed in order to apply to a university or other institutions of higher education. Matura can be compared to A-Level exams. In Poland it is taken in May (and retakes available in August). The exam is not compulsory, although Polish students must pass it in order to be able to apply for higher education courses in Poland and elsewhere.

There are some important buildings like shopping centres, cinemas, a socio-cultural centre, some secondary schools, some primary schools, nursery schools, hospitals and health centres, a courthouse, a big sports and leisure centre with swimming pools, blocks of flats with patios, houses, green areas, the zoo and there is a big park, too.

TO SUM UP…

Although you may be anxious about further details of the following presentation, there is only one solution to this (We suppose…).

The next Project Mobility is going to take place in Zamość, Poland, and that is why we are so mysteriuos about our region, town and its surroundings.

The only way to feel what Poland is, how modern democracy with its values developed here and how we perceive linguistic diversity is to visit our school in January 2014, the town of Zamość itself and its heritage of European culture.
