This law worked very satisfactorily in most Perishes. In S t Mary a division of opinion arose as to the location of the model road in the 6th ward, and due to the demand of some of the citizens of that ward, the 1Ô16 Legislature, pasted a new road law which gave the right to local proper- ty holders to form themselves into road districts and substituted as ffceir governing authority local po- Jlet jurors, local members of the reboot board and one citizen ap- pointed by the Police Jury, making this Board independent after its or- ganisation of the Police Jury. This law has not worked suffi- ciently satisfactory anywhere, to overcome serious financial objection which has arisen throughout the State. It wae repealed as a general necessity and not for any political or sectional reason. The bonds of these boards, acting independently of the governing au- thority of the Police Jury, would not bring par in the bond markets of the U. 8. While bondfc of road districts bright. St. Mary men are real men. The draft examination at Franklin Sat- urday found 107 men out of 134 who are physically fit for service. Of course, it may develop that they will be exempted for causes that have nothing to do with their physi- cal fitness bat the preliminary ex- amination has shown that the ability to fight is there and that if it is backed up by a willingness to fight St. Mary will have the honor of sending forth her full quota of fine fighting men and the first call will still be far from exhausted. The sugar cane growers shook hands with themselves over the crops and prices of 1916. Now, it appears that 1917 is going to be better still in both crops and prices. One thing which local history bears out—if the sugar growers prosper, every one prospers. There may be a few ex- ceptions, but for the most part the planters of St. Mary are progressive and put their money into circulation as fast as they acquire it. This may be said for a certainty of the plant- ers in the west end of the parish. Nervous ladies and children are assured that there will be no cause for hysteria if the streets of Morgan City soon become, the play- ground for apes and other jungle denizens. If certain bibulous gents may also see sights which incline them to sign the pledge, well and good.
