The Earth remains in its course everyday, the moon revolving around the Earth, and the sun rising in the East. Snow falls, deli-cately covering the green grass, pure whiteness in all directions. Our hearts tire-lessly beat 80 times a minute, providing life to our entire body.

All of these things, no matter how inde-pendent they may seem, are completely dependent on Allah. Nothing occurs with-out the permission of Allah. The sun rises with His permission; the snow falls with His permission; water quenches our thirst with His permission; every time our heart beats, it takes permission from Allah be-fore doing so!

As such, all good comes from Allah, in-cluding the piety that resides within the righteous. The righteous are those people who fear Allah, love his Rasul ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص strictly

adhere to the shari’a, and who gain near-ness to Allah, becoming a Wali. The term, Awliya, is the Arabic plural for wali, which means friend.

In regards to the Majestic Qur’an Kareem, Allah refers to the Awliya as his “friends”

or those who are beloved to him. Allah re-fers to them as “awliya” in Surah Yunus ayah 62, “Behold! verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” This is an exalted rank that is be-stowed by Allah upon those who love Him.

Why we should Love Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص more than

anything in the world

We, as Muslims, should love and respect Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) more than anything else in the world for many reasons. We should love him since it changes us and gives us more faith. We should also love Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) because he guided us in Islam. Lastly, we should love Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) because Allah tells us to. Muslims, such as ourselves, should love and respect Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) since it gives us more faith. It changes us inside, and makes our hearts more pure. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children, and all of mankind.” If you love Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), then you are very faithful and you have a lot of respect for him. You will also receive many good deeds for the Day of Resurrection. Another reason we should love and respect Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) is because he has guided us. If it weren’t for Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), we would not have the complete meaning of Islam, and we would be like a deserted house. It is mentioned in the Quran, in surah 42, verse 52, Allah says, “And verily, you (O Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path.” In Surah 47, Al-Muhammad, verse 5, Allah says, “He will guide them and improve their state.” We are very lucky that Prophet Muhammad was there to guide us and to help us unto the (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)right path. Finally, we should love Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)

since Allah (SWT) commands us to do so. In Surah 3, Al-Imran, verse 32, Allah says, “Say (O Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)): ‘Obey Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).’ But, if they turn away, Allah does not like the disbelievers.” In Surah 4, An-Nisa, verse 80, Allah states,” He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)), has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)) as a watcher over them.” In conclusion, we should all be very respectful and

love Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) more than anything in the world. He has done so many great things for us. Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) is the last prophet, and he helped complete the religion of peace. In the first Kalimah: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger, Prophet Muhammad’s name is placed (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)next to Allah (SWT)’s

name! That is such a great position. If Allah (SWT) has positioned him with such great respect, then us, as the Prophet’s (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) ummah, should truly love and admire Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) as a great leader and hero. We will be awarded with great deeds, and it is worth it. Kids these days believe that the real heroes are singers or famous people that are cool. But a Muslim’s real hero should be Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص). We should love and respect Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) more than anything in the world. - Written by Sania Irfan

Sahabah of the Month: Abu Dhar Ghifari

The Monthly Noor 2:04

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari ( رضي هللا عنه) was one of the first companions to revert to Islam, the fifth after Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) started to receive revelations. Abu

Dharr al-Ghifari ( رضي هللا عنه) was known for his keen sense of honor, justice, truth, and patience.

Abu Dharr ( رضي هللا عنه) was from the tribe of al-Ghifar. This tribe was well-known since many trading caravans travelled through the Ghifari territory. They were known for stealing and plundering caravans that would pass through; therefore, the Quraish were careful to treat them well. However, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari ( رضي هللا عنه) was different. Although most of his tribe were idol worshipers and thieves, he had a deeper understanding of life and knew there was only one God worthy of worship, unlike the idols his tribe were adhering to.

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari ( رضي هللا عنه) had heard from the people of the Book that there would be a new Prophet coming soon supporting the Oneness of God. After hearing of such a prophet in Mecca, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari went to speak to Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) himself.

After recognizing that Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) enjoined what

is good, forbid what is evil, and had a light of good character emanating from him, he proclaimed the Shahadah and became a Muslim!

Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) smiled at this since people from the

Ghifar tribe had a generally negative reputation, yet Allah opened the heart of this man in such an early period of Islam showing that Islam was a light that touched everyone’s heart.

Abu Dharr asked Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) what he could do to

serve him, and he said to go back to his tribe and keep

his conversion a secret until Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) calls

upon him, as Muslims who announced their faith were persecuted near this time. Abu Dharr al-Ghifari understood his orders, but after talking (رضي هللا عنه )and being with Rasulullah (صلي هللا عليه واله و سلم), Iman flooded his entire body to such an extent that he went out to the Haram and publicly proclaimed his faith in One Allah and Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) being His

Final Messenger. The Quraish reacted violently to this and started beating him; however, Al-’Abbas helped him by jumping in front and reminding the Quraish that he was from the tribe of Al-Ghifar.

Abu Dharr ( رضي هللا عنه) later returned to his home in Ghifar; however, while in his town, he couldn’t keep quiet about the beauty of Islam. So he kept talking about Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), the justice of Islam, and noble

and proper manners. By means of Abu Dharr ( رضي هللا the entire tribe of Ghifar became Muslim! In ,(عنه fact, Abu Dharr ( رضي هللا عنه) even reached out to the neighboring tribe of Bani Aslim to spread the light of Islam.

Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) held high opinions of Abu Dharr. He

later told him to spread truth with patience and words rather than being tempted to use his sword. His life, actions, and words all resonated with truth, and he continued his efforts of opposing wrong and corruption with his speech even during the dangerous times of the Caliphate of Hadrat Uthman.

He would fearlessly go into the capital of corrupt leaders and speak out against them, yet remembering Rasulullah’s (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) advice and never carrying his

sword with him, even in dangerous situations. His words were his sword, and he was successful in demonstrating the power of truth, patience, and peace through his words and speech rather than through fighting and bloodshed.

Personal Development: Rules of being a Gentleman

The Monthly Noor 2:04

What does it mean to be a Gentleman?

A gentleman is one who works to help others yet he does not seek any benefit or gratification in return. He selflessly helps and lives to serve others. Many times, a gentleman will stand up for something greater than himself, even if it puts him at risk.

How does one become a Gentleman?

The process begins with looking deep inside one's inner being. One must understand who they are and what his/her purpose in life is. Without self awareness one can not know Allah. To know Allah, one must find himself. Even a great sinner can reform and find Al-lah. Part of the process of becoming a gentleman requires one to go through a process of transformation.

If we look into the life of Malcolm X, we see he was a criminal and outlaw in his youth. When he was locked in prison, he went through a process of transformation. As a result, he lived and died serving Islam and his community, changing the condition of those around him. Although he was later assassinated, he wasn’t afraid of dying, and it never stopped him from standing up for the truth.

Rules of Being A Gentleman

1. Be Selfless

2. Give Honor & Respect

3. Be Sincere & Honest

4. Don't Hurt or Abuse Anyone

5. Have Courage & Protect Others

6. Be Modest & Have Self-Respect

7. Treat Others with Kindness & Courtesy (Adhab)

8. Live Your Life To Please Allah

Stories of the Righteous we can learn from

Shaykh Abdul Qadr al-Jilani was a direct descendent of Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) (Syed) born from two

righteous parents: Hadrat Syed Musa Abu Salih Jangi Dost and Hadrat Syedah Fatima Ummul Khair. Hadrat Syed Musa Abu Salih was a direct descendent of Imam Hasan, and Syedah Fatima Ummul Khair was a direct descendent of Imam Hussain, the grandchildren of Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص). So

Shaykh Abdul Qadr al-Jilani had the most virtuous of births and the most noble of lineages.

His father received the title, “Jangi Dost,” (literal meaning “friend of war”) due to his control over his inner desires and ego. He was referred to as waging war against himself, and being successful in subduing his inner desires. He was a man of much taqwa and piety who lived his life with honor and truth. It was this strong faith that eventually lead to him marrying Syedah Fatima Ummul Khair, Shaykh Abdul Qadr al-Jilani’s mother.

One day, Hadrat Abu Salih Jangi Dost was doing the dhikr of Allah near a river bank; however, he had become hungry since it had been days since he last ate. He then saw an apple floating down stream, and went to go catch it. But, after eating the apple, a thought occurred to him. “What if the apple came

from someone’s orchard?” If that was the case, then he would have to ask for forgiveness from the owner since he ate that which was not his. Hadrat Abu Salih was so meticulously concerned about this possibility and it affected him deeply. He started to travel upstream to find the owner of the apple to seek pardon.

Hadrat Abu Salih Jangi Dost found out that the apple did indeed come from an orchard, and it belonged to Hadrat Abdullah Sumi, an older man. After talking with him, Hadrat Abdullah Sumi found out that he was extremely honest, trustworthy, and virtuous. Not only that, but he also found out that Hadrat Abu Salih was a descendent of Imam Hasan!

With this in mind, Hadrat Abdullah Sumi told Hadrat Abu Salih that, if he wanted his forgiveness, then he would have to work for him for twelve years. Hadrat Abu Salih readily accepted.

After working hard for twelve years, Hadrat Abdullah Sumi then told him that he needed to do one more thing to receive his pardon and that was to marry his daughter who was blind, deaf, paralyzed, and crippled. Instead of refusing, Hadrat Abu Salih accepted again, showing how noble he was trying to do what he can to obtain the pleasure of Allah!

On the wedding night, Hadrat Abu Salih entered the bride’s chamber, but was shocked with what he saw. He saw that the girl in the room was overwhelmingly beautiful, radiating a light as brilliant as the moon from her face, with no signs of disability what so ever. Hadrat Abu Salih quickly left the room thinking he had entered the wrong chamber. He approached Hadrat Abdullah Sumi and asked him about what he saw as the description of his daughter did not seem to match what he himself

saw of his daughter.

It was at this point the Hadrat Abdullah Sumi explained, “ I had stated my daughter was blind, because she had never seen any person with whom she could lawfully marry. She was told to be deaf because she had never paid any attention to falsehood. She was told to be paralytic because she had never touched any unlawful things. She was told to be crippled as she had never stepped towards an unjust act.” His wife was the noble, virtuous, and serene Syedah Fatima Ummul Khair, a direct descendent of Imam Hussain. And thus, the parents of Shaykh Abdul Qadr al-Jilani were united!

What we can learn:

Be honest and trustworthy in all your affairs

Honesty and good character pays off

Hadrat Ali was the last of the rightly guided Caliphs. He was also known as a symbol of loyalty, knowledge, and generosity, gaining him the title of, the Lion of Allah. In addition to his generosity and being the husband of the daughter of Rasulullah, he was also known as an invincible warrior. Once during a battle, Hadrat Ali had overtaken an enemy and was about to finish him off when the enemy warrior spat on his face. Hadrat Ali then stepped away, sheathed his sword, and said, "Taking your life is unlawful to me, Go away!" The enemy was shocked. Spitting in the face of the Lion of Allah saved his life! Confused, he asked, "O Ali, l was helpless, you were about to kill me. I insulted you, and you released me. Why?" Hadrat Ali replied, "When you spat in my face, it aroused the anger of my ego. Had I killed you then, it would not have been for the sake of Allah, but for the sake of my ego. I would have been a murderer. You are free to go." The warrior, deeply moved by this display of character, converted to Islam at that very moment realizing the good Islam stood for!

During another battle, Hadrat Ali once saw an enemy approaching him. He was a handsome young man with sword in hand, ready to fight Hadrat Ali. Hadrat Ali felt sympathy seeing a young man on the battlefield and warned him, "O young man, do you not know who I am? I am Ali the invincible. No one can escape from my sword. Go and save yourself!" Even after hearing this, the young man still continued towards Hadrat Ali, armed with his sword in hand. "Why do you wish to attack me? Why do you wish to die?" Hadrat Ali asked. The young man answered, "l love a

girl who vowed she would be mine if I killed you." "But what if you die?" Hadrat Ali asked. "What is better than dying for the one I love?" he replied. "At worst, would I not be relieved of the agonies of love?" Hearing the sincerity in his voice, Hadrat Ali took off his helmet, left his sword, and bent down on the ground extending his neck forward. Seeing the wisdom and integrity of Hadrat Ali, the love in the young man's heart was transformed into admiration for him and the One whom Hadrat Ali loved: Allah Azawajal!

Student Essay Submission: Patience (Sabr)

In Islam, one of the most important characteristics is patience or sabr. Sabr stems from the Arabic root meaning to stop, refrain, or detain. Patience based on numerous studies from Islamic scholars can mean refrain from complaining, seeking help from Almight Allah (SWT), following the Qur’an and Sunnah, and keeping close to Allah (SWT). Patience gives us the ability to do good, such as prayer and fasting, while refraining from evil, such as yelling at someone. Patience is a quality that enables a Muslim to respond correctly to every aspect of life, especially when there is a challenge. Patience makes us turn our faces to Allah (SWT) especially in times of need and not giving up hope that Allah (SWT) is with us. Patience allows us to persevere, keep trying, and never give up no matter what the consequences because we know that we are doing the right thing, even though it may be tolling. Life, as we know, is a test. Not everything is handed to us on a silver platter. So it is the quality of patience that makes us attain that golden success when success may not be visible in the immediate future. In surah Al-Asr, Allah (SWT) educates Muslims that, in order to obtain success in this life and the hereafter, we must “And (join together) in the mutual teaching of truth, and of patience and constancy” (Surah Al-Asr). In surah Al-’Imran, ayat 200, Allah (SWT) says, “O those who believe! Persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other, and fear Allah (SWT); that you may prosper.” Again mentioned in the Glorious Quran, patience is

mandatory for even our prayers- “Nay, seek Allah’s (SWT) help with patience, perseverance, and prayer” (Al-Baqarah, 2:45). In fact, the Quran mentions patience at least 90 times. In surah Yunus, Ayat 109, Allah (SWT) says, “And (Oh Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)), follow the inspiration sent

unto you, and be patient till Allah gives judgement.” Thus, one of the foundations of our religion is patience, and this applies to our daily lives and was evident in the lives of every Messenger. For

instance, Prophet Nuh (A) spent decades trying to convince his people to worship Allah (SWT). Another example is Prophet Yusuf when he was patient for those years he spent in jail for a crime that he did not commit. Another instance is Prophet Musa as he was patient in his dealing with the evil

pharaoh. Finally, in the life of Prophet Muhammad ( patience was evident with his life including the ,(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

tragic deaths that occurred in his life. Some of this heart wrenching moments were with the death of this father, his mother, the death of his wife, Khadijah ®, his uncle (Abu Talib), the death of three of his four blessed daughters, his own sons, and even his uncle Hamza (R) . Death takes a heavy toll on any human being, yet, what the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) experienced will always be

more patience than what any other human being could experience. Another example of his patience is when the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) was made fun of and sent

out of his hometown by the kufar. The amount of suffering and persection he experienced took much

patience. Clearly, the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) was patient to

stay with Islam and its teachings despite that hardships that tried stopping him in preaching the Truth. Patience is an important virtue that we Muslims innately learn about because our life is full of waves of trials and tribulations so when we are either happy or sad, we must remember Allah (SWT) and strive for patience. We must never give up on Allah (SWT). How do we attain this patience? In a famous hadith, Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) says, “Whoever tries to be

patient, then Allah will help him be patient.” This means that patience is something we have to work for, it is not a quality we are born with. For instance,

for children, fasting an entire day becomes easier after fasting for 1/2 day then 2/3 then the entire day and then the entire month of Ramadan Shareef. If we are sincere in our actions and do things correctly, Allah (SWT) will bless us with the quality of patience. Consequently, next time we have a stressor in our life, our response will be more positive because of the patience that we have learned from past experiences. Also, we must learn the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah in order to practice patience correctly. For example, patience including asking help from Allah (SWT) during calamity can only be done correctly if we know how to pray correctly– i.e. wudu, Salat, Du’a. We also need to study the lives of the Prophets to learn about how

they were patient so we can learn from their experiences– most importantly, Seerhat-un-Nabi because the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) had to practice such a high

degree of patience in his life that there is every example possible of an extreme case of being patient that is evident in his life. So when we feel like we are being patient, it is nothing in caliber compared to Prophet Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص). Yes, we as

Muslims should achieve the noble characteristic of patience, but we should realize that it is a lifelong learning process that starts from birth, and with this quality, we can handle life only with success, inshALLAH. - Written by Hasan Munshi

Allah (Subhanah wa taala) has made every human

being unique in his or her own way and has exalted

the status of some who have followed the right path

by following the rules that the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص left

behind for every Muslim. As Allah Subhanah wa

taala states in the Holy Quran in Surah Fatiha:

“Keep us to the straight path – the path of those

upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those

who have evoked Your anger or of those who have

gone astray.” In this verse of the holy Quran, Allah

Subhanah wa taala wants us to follow the right path

and to follow those who

have worked hard to

maintain a strong

relation with Allah by

following His

commands such as

reading Quran, praying

Salat, paying Zakat,

observing Fast,

performing Hajj, and

following the necessary

teachings that leads us to the land of paradise.

Now who are the people that Allah is instructing us

to follow in the Holy Quran? They are the righteous

individuals who have come down to Earth after the

Prophet Muhammad (Prayers and Salutations of

Allah be upon Him) to spread, follow, and teach the

true path of Allah. They are known as the Awliya

Allah in which Allah has praised their status

because of the good deeds and acts they have taught

in this world pleasing Allah Subhanah wa taala.

They are also known as the friends of Allah in

which Allah has been pleased with their prayers and

acts of good deeds.

Among the scholars that are recognized as the

Awliya Allah, the sultan or the leader of the Awliya

Allah is Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani(May Allah

be pleased with him). Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir

Jilani was born on 470 A.H. and at the time of his

birth it was said by his mother Syeda Ummul Khair

Fatima that he wouldn’t drink milk during the time

of day due to the month of Ramadan. Right from

birth people came to know about his noble character

and the acts of goodness that he would spread in the

future.

Since then, he wanted to go to Baghdad (In Iraq) to

seek knowledge. So

he acquired

permission from his

mother Syeda Ummul

Khair Fatima who

accepted his request.

Upon leaving Syeda

Ummul Khair Fatima

gave Shaykh Syed

Abdul Qadir Jilani

forty dinars (dollars)

and told him to make

a promise never to commit a sin by lying. Shaykh

Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani gave her the promise

that he will never lie and will always be truthful.

From there Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani journeyed to

Baghdad on a caravan. Along the way, there were

thieves that stopped Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani’s

caravan and asked him if he had any goods. Since,

Shaykh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani promised his

mother for speaking only the truth, he answered

them back by telling them that he had forty dinars in

his pocket that his mother stitched up for him on his

shirt. The thieves thought he was lying so they

brought him to their chief. The chief asked the same

question and Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani gave him

the same answer that he told the thieves. Eventually

have forty dinars. The boss then asked him why you made this true confession (of the forty dinars). Shaykh

Abdul Qadir Jilani replied that he made a promise with his mother that he would only speak the truth. Upon

hearing this, he realized his mistakes that he had done by stealing, he than repented for his sins along with

the other thieves.

After this incident, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani Radiullahu Anhu continued his journey to Baghdad and

became a great scholar of Islam.

Over 70,000 people converted to Islam by his hand. In addition, through his scholarly work, he managed to

restore and save the Hanbali Fiqh which was in danger of disappearing.

So may Allah Subhana wa taala give us guidance and add in our hearts the love for Shaykh Syed Abdul

Qadir Jilani (Radiullahu Anhu) to follow the right path of Allah and to make us true Muslims.
