A New Year's resolution is something that goes

in one year and out the other.

January is named after the Roman God Janus, who is

always shown as having two heads. He looks back to

the last year and forward to the new one. In looking

back, I went a great deal farther than just last year. I looked back

100 years. 1914 played host to many historical events like... the start

of World War One; the first successful blood transfusion is per-

formed; the Panama Canal opens; Babe Ruth plays his first major

baseball game; the first electric traffic light is installed In Cleveland,

Ohio; the average cost of a house was a little over $6,000.00; the

cost of a car was about $550.00 and a ticket to the movies was 5

cents. My how things have changed!

Looking forward... what will 2014 bring? I

can't answer this question, we will just have to

live into it! This will be the YEAR OF THE

HORSE on the Chinese calendar which runs

from January 31, 2014 to February 18, 2015.

Historically, the Horse is the symbol of power,

grace, beauty, nobility, strength and freedom.

Sounds like the Newcomers' Club to me.

This year, while making your New Year's Eve resolutions, I would

ask that you make an extra one on behalf of the Newcomers' Club.

Please resolve to partake of the goods or services of at least one of

our advertisers. Business Partners, as I like to call them, are one of

the "unsung heroes" of this organization. And when you visit them,

please let them know that you appreciate their support of the New-

comers' Club. Our Business Partners play a huge roll in the eco-

nomics of the cCub and without them our dues could not remain as

low as they are.

New Year's Day is every man's birthday. (Charles Lamb)

Al Ford was recently hospitalized for pneumonia. He is now in his home recuperating.

Many people have been asking about my great-granddaughter, Julia. I just talked to her on the phone and

also saw her on my Facebook page . She had a doctor's appointment yesterday and the halo brace was re-

moved. Thanks to everyone for all your prayers and concerns. Say a big prayer for the wonderful doctor she had also.

GENEALOGY

We are going to tour 2 facilities on the George E. Wahlen Veterans Campus, which is

next to the University of Utah Campus. The FISHER HOUSE, which opened in January

2013, is a free place for veteran’s families to stay while their loved ones are treated at the VA Hospital. Why Fisher

house? Because “A family’s love is good medicine.” The Fisher House is a 20 bedroom facility which cost $5.8 mil-

lion to build. It was paid for by the Fisher House Foundation. They welcome volunteers and donations.

VALOR HOUSE: a homeless veteran’s safe haven. This building was designed to accommodate 72 beds, each with a

private room and bathroom. The facility offers counseling, medical treatment , and training to help veterans meet life

challenges and to find employment. We hope you will join us in this interesting and informative tour.

WHEN: Monday, January 13 AT 10:30 AM.

WHERE: Veterans Hospital Campus

TIME/Carpool: Shopko/Red Lobster Parking Lot, 1300 East and I-80 at 10: AM.

LUNCH: Corner Bakery on Foothill Drive

RSVP: Marilyn, 801-266-1222, or Betty, 801-566-7722

Members should bring enough food to allow wine to be consumed and still be able to drive home safely.

To get past the guard at the gate simply say

“Codell” and your name. This works 90% of the

time but Pepperwood is a very exclusive

neighborhood and you could be subjected to a strip

search. You might want to have a little snort before

you come, just in case.

The Marathon Bridge season begins in September and ends in May. We use

party bridge rotation and scoring - it is not duplicate. You need to know how

to play bridge: you will not be happy if you are a complete beginner. Men are encouraged to join! We begin on the second Thursday of each month at

10:00 am. All games are played at the Golden Corral at 7200 S and 700 E. It costs $13.00 per month for

Community Resources

We hope you will join fellow RMSG members for FINISHING TOUCHES, the rehearsal performance of

UTAH SYMPHONY on Friday, February 7 @ 10:00 a.m. at Abravanel Hall in downtown Salt Lake City. We

meet at 9:30 for refreshments, followed by the rehearsal at 10:00 a.m. We are requesting that you purchase

tickets prior to the rehearsal. Tickets can be purchased before February 7 for a discounted price of $12.90.

Please call Sean at 801-869-9042. The tickets sell for $15.50 before the discount. The UTAH SYMPHONY

will be rehearsing MOZART'S piano Concerto. Great cities inspire great masterpieces.

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 is a grand paean to Leningrad and her besieged inhabitants as the Nazi's sur-

rounded and virtually destroyed the city in 1941. Salzburg was Mozart's birthplace and as the city's "favorite

son”, he composed a wealth of music in honor of his home. Among these was the glorious Trinity Mass of

1773.

A heart felt thank you to everyone who donated to our December charities: Utah Food Bank and

Crossroads. Newcomers’ members gave from the heart. A special thanks to Debbie Reeves for delivering

our donations to Crossroads and the Food Bank and to Linda Rogers for sending our monetary donations to

Utah Food Bank.

In the old days, these former scratch golfers used to shoot a lot of birdies. Now they’re best at

just shooting birds. Their strongest hole is the 19th which requires great skill and timing.

You’ve got to make sure you’re in the men’s room when the check comes or you’ll be stuck

with the bar bill. For those Newcomers’ who would like to go out to the course and watch

them play, your safest spot is about 30 yards directly in front. An analysis of the above

swings indicates that the ball will never go there.

Edison Stanford Hearing Center Invites you to test drive remarkable new digital hearing instruments. This offer is free of charge and you are under no obli-gation. These revolutionary digital instruments use the latest technology to comfortably and almost invisibly help you hear more clearly. This new technology solves the “stopped up ears” and “head in a barrel” sensation some people experience.

Special testing will be done to deter-mine the increased benefits of this technology. Benefits of hearing aids vary by type and degree of hearing loss, noise, environment, accuracy of hearing test, and proper fit. This is a wonderful opportunity to determine if hearing help is available for your hearing loss while you evaluate your performance with this technology.

If you wish to participate you will be required to have your hearing tested in our office free of charge to determine candida-cy. Qualified individuals will then be placed on a two week test drive period. At the end of this period, you may pur-chase the instruments, if you desire, at a reduced charge. Otherwise, there is no charge whatsoever for participating in this promotion.

Call now if you wish to be included in

this test drive promotion. Test drive

dates are available until December 30.
