This week we have Journey to Bethlehem at our church when children from years3 and 4 from our 3 primary schools AND Ratby Primary school will be coming for an amazing experience of the first Christmas. Please pray that they will all be touched in a very special way by what they see and hear.

991155 DDEECC

Both Carols Round the Tree and Fair Cuppa Carols take place this week on Tuesday and Thursday. Pray for both events, that there will be good attendance and weather and that the true meaning of Christmas will ring out clearly.

11662222 DDEECC

Please pray for the churches as they proclaim the Christian message of Christmas loud and clear. Pray for people to find hope and purpose as they listen to the Good News for Mankind.

22332299 DDEECC

Some people dread Christmas for many different reasons. Please pray for “Angels” to be around them, to comfort them in their desperate need, and lead them to Jesus the Joy to the World.

Welcome to the Christmas and New Year edition of Contact

As usual there will be lots going on over the next few weeks, with Journey to Bethlehem happening for the local primary schools, and with Open the Book pointing the children and staff to Jesus.

Carols around the Tree will be happening at the Stamford Arms (one of my absolute favourite evenings of the year) whilst at services leading up to Christmas we shall be also singing carols and reading or listening to those wonderful old familiar passages of scripture!

We will see cribs and manger scenes all over the place, with the sweet baby Jesus surrounded by smiling animals and angels and wise men, no doubt with a smattering of haloes etc. etc.

BUT, let’s just stop for a minute and look beneath the tinsel.

This may look sweet and familiar and give us a warm glow inside, but there is more….much, much more!

This is Jesus, our Immanuel, God with us!

This little baby created the universe! This is the Christ, the promised one, the redeemer. This is the Word of God, the living, walking, talking one who is at once wholly a man, but also wholly God. He is the Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

He is the hope of all mankind. Born to live and then to die so that people might be saved from the inevitable result of their sin.

PPrraaiissee tthhee LLoorrdd!!

After Christmas, as we start the new year, we shall have our annual Day of Prayer followed by several Sundays where our sermon

theme will be prayer itself.

I am looking forward to this, I’m hoping to learn more about how to make the most of this crucial and central activity in our lives as Christians.

So, brothers, sisters and friends, I hope that you all have a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a new year filled with the blessings of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

Blessings

Firstly, thank you so much from all of us, to those of you who took the time to think, discuss and then fill in the questionnaire!

We are deeply grateful.

The team is very aware that time is passing, but please be reassured that we are still analyzing the huge amount of data we received from the questionnaires.

You may remember that we were hoping for two things, firstly, to get a feel for the spiritual temperature of the church and secondly to include as many of you as possible in the spiritual development of our church.

The final number of returns was thirtyfive, which is pretty good for a small church like ours.

So far we have been concentrating on the first three questions which asked about spiritual fulfillment, equipping and belonging. Involvement in services, and about preaching.

A theme that appears a lot in your replies is the need for more practical, applicable teaching in sermons and we shall be looking at how this can be delivered.

However, our first visible output is that we shall be asking duty elders to “say goodbye” to folk as they leave on Sunday morning, hopefully to encourage folk as they leave, and to ensure there is a point of contact for all of the congregation.

This means we will have a welcome and farewell.

Our second visible output is to ask (initially) our home bred preachers and worship leaders to introduce a time of reflection into the service at some point after the sermon to act as spiritual, personal or collective consolidation and to encourage practical

application.

We shall continue to dripfeed outputs from the questionnaire. Sometimes these will be as a result of the number of responses about a specific thing, and at other times it may be what we feel the Lord is saying to us through your replies.

Please pray for us (Kevan, Ruth, Helen, Tim and Wendy) as we continue. Blessings

This outreach into the community, takes place every Saturday from 10 until 12.30 at the U.R.C. It is now in it's 4th year and is run as a joint venture between the Churches in Groby. During this time, it has been supported by a faithful group of members from both Churches. Originally, customers numbered around 50. More recently, numbers are up to 90+ (including children). Some weeks we are feeling stretched and would welcome more offers of help.

Hot food, cakes and drinks are on offer and family groups enjoy crafts, art, games and a bouncy castle. If serving refreshments or helping with children is not your 'cup of tea', how about just popping in for an hour, to talk to, listen to and encourage the villagers who have turned up.

This can be a very rewarding way of furthering the work of the Lord in Groby. If interested, please contact me on 01162873955 or 07850481764 or [email protected]. Thanks.

Early in November 18 people came along to paint pictures for an Advent mural. The idea being the finished paintings would be transformed into a stained glass window for the church entrance porch

SAGE stands for Senior Adults Growing and Exploring, and we lived up to our name by exploring acrylic paint in no uncertain terms. There was much discussion over the choice of colours for the Magi’s robes and whether cacti grow around Bethlehem. Mary appears to have acquired an extensive wardrobe of colourful gowns and some of the angels look anything but angelic! But a jolly good time was had by all.

Check out our finished works of art during Advent and see if you can spot a budding Banksy.

Here’s one we did earlier!

‘Lord, teach us to Pray’

Jesus’s disciples asked this of Jesus when they saw Him praying to the Father (Luke 11:1). Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer; this can be seen throughout all four gospels.

Church elders have agreed a church focus on prayer and begin 2019 with a Day of Prayer, followed by preaching / teaching on prayer during the Sunday morning services. We hope this will encourage and broaden an experience of prayer for all of us and help us develop a confident growth in our personal and Church prayer life.

It is based on the prayer our Lord taught His disciples, the Lord’s prayer. My prayer is that our preachers and teachers will allow God’s spirit to inspire and pervade all they say.

We would like to include practical examples of answered prayer each Sunday. If anyone has an experience they feel they could share with the congregation, please talk to one of the elders.

AANNDD TTEEAARRFFUUNNDD SSUUPPPPOORRTTTearfund reached 3.8 million people last year through

their Community Development projects. One of the projects Tearfund’s partners in Cajamarca, Peru has been involved with is by working with and supporting local schools.

Yanelli, (pictured here – second from right with her classmates) is eight years old and is smart, eager to learn and, has big dreams. She says, ‘I want to study a lot; when I grow up, I want to be a nurse... I will heal all the children in my community.’

Yanelli attends Aylambo Primary School and is in the second grade. In poorer communities, huge importance is placed on a good education as many parents feel that it helps ensure a better life for their children. However, though bright, Yanelli and all her class were unlikely to pass their year at school.

Warmis have helped the school find a solution, by supporting and resourcing them to run exciting new lesson plans which have kept the children motivated, and by offering additional study support. Yanelli is back on track with her studies. She has gone from having very poor results to some of the best in the class. Wonderfully, neither Yanelli nor any of her classmates failed the year. Warmis is working closely with the school and various educational committees to make sure this success continues. School reinforcement workshops were held for 45 children during January and February of this year, helping the students’ performance improve and progress to the next level. Through the workshops, children have become more confident in faith and hope in God.

Warmis have been supporting local community leaders to

lobby authorities for local health support. The result has been this new Health Centre (pictured), with a budget to enable the nurse (also pictured on the right) to stock and run this much needed health service. She is keen to help families with health issues such as malnutrition and respiratory diseases which are common in these poorer rural areas around Cajamarca.

The bedrock of community life are families. Pastor Andres had been deeply concerned about the amount of domestic violence and abuse towards children in Aylambo, near Cajamarca. Parents seemed unaware of the harm they were inflicting, perpetuating a chain of violent behaviour that the children would take into adulthood. Pastor Andres began to run regular parenting workshops to help them understand and look at alternative ways of dealing with things. As a result, domestic violence has greatly reduced, children and women are better informed as to who they can turn to if they see or experience domestic abuse, and children are looking more relaxed.

One of Warmis’s most important impacts in the rural areas around Cajamarca, has been in agriculture, teaching new ways of farming with different seeds that enable farmers to withstand the effects of a changing climate. They have built a biodigester in Sulluscocha, which has taken care of their fertilizing needs (see our noticeboard in the hall!).

The work of Warmis continues, with God’s grace and love, steeped in the prayers of Warmis workers, the many Christian volunteers, and increasingly the communities they are serving. Individuals are affected by God’s love which is evident through Warmis and they become infected themselves. Life is still challenging for many in those isolated rural communities, but Warmis can now look to a future where they can be selfsustaining. Tearfund, via Warmis have given many a hope, a new dignity and a faith.

OOPPEENN TTHHEE BBOOOOKK

We have just finished our November presentations ‘Deborah the Judge’ with a strong Deborah played by Lynda ordering about Colin who played Barak the leader of the Israelites, both keen Am Dram players.

For December we present ‘The Wise Men’s Visit’ with three starwatchers following the star to Bethlehem. This will include a guest appearance by Humphrey, or is it Desmond – he will have the hump if I get his name wrong.

Anyway, it’s the story about the special King that God promised to send us – Baby Jesus!!

The big challenge for people at Christmas is what they see? Do they see a nice story about a baby being born or do they see how God sent their Saviour into our world?

In January Baby Jesus is grownup and our presentation is ‘I Can See’ with Jesus healing the man that had been blind from birth.

At the end of the presentation Jesus asks the man – ‘Do you believe that God sent me?’ The man responded – ‘I do – I really do!’

This Christmas ask yourself whether you really believe that the Baby Jesus was, and is, your Saviour sent by God. I trust you can answer ‘I do – I really do!’

Please continue to pray for this valuable work through 2019 and specifically how we can build on the platform of a generation of Groby children experiencing these presentations.

Thirteen fellas watched the film and tucked into Sausage and Mash, with sausages freshly made from Leicester Market, including Black Pudding sausage and a very hot Hot Spanish sausage.

The evenings start at 7.00pm and finish when the film ends. A £2 donation is generally enough to cover the cost of food and a can of soft drink.

There is no need to book – just turn up.

This is a Churches Together evening and fellas from both churches are encouraged to come along with a nonchurch friend.

They are joined by others from the team and Extend for what we hope will have great impact on the children, and staff, who come along.

Please pray for this work – for safety for the children as they walk to church and that they will take away something to change their thinking, not just for this Christmas, but for life.

Thanks to Lynda and Chris for their work on this.

19 ½ folk (don’t ask) went along to the delightful Shuttlewood Manor, Ulvescroft to enjoy an outing and a lovely cooked lunch. As it was one of those dreary October days, we encamped in the cosy rear lounge which had been set out in groups of three great for catching up and conversation.

After enjoying homemade chicken pie with homegrown vegetables and sponge pudding, we celebrated a 76 birthday by blowing out the candles and forcing ourselves to partake of birthday cake!

We deliberated over two quizzes, one of which was tricky; ‘How Well Do You Know the Christmas Story’ with 25 multiple choice questions. Nobody managed to answer all the questions correctly and this provoked some good discussions.

It was lovely to sit and chat, listen and even sing along to well known songs on the organ.

Please pray for our Elders (their photos are at the back of the church). Pray for health and strength and protection because they carry many responsibilities in leading our fellowship.

11331199 JJAANN

Pray for Kathy du Boulay as she works to provide our preachers week by week. This task becomes more difficult when we lose valuable preachers such as Derek Taylor. Pray for wisdom and strength for Kathy as she undertakes this task that many of us take for granted.

Please pray for the faithful people who regularly are part of the Saturday Tasters team. Ask God to bless and reward them in their love to serve God in this way.

Please continue to pray for a new Minister for our church. Ask God to prepare the right person to apply for this new role and also pray for wisdom for our Elders as they look at applications and make decisions.
