Page 5: The Mohawks

The Mohawk were a very interesting tribe. The Mohawks were part of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Mohawks had the biggest part of land compared to the other four tribes: the Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, And the Seneca. The word Mohawk means the people building a longhouse. The Mohawk have a lot of interesting things about them.

The Mohawk had many kind of foods. Corn, beans and squash were called the three sister crops. The woman planted the crops. Deer, elk, and fish were

hunted by men. The cornbread, soup, and stew were cooked on a stone hearth. This was traditional food

for the Mohawks. That is some of the food the Mohawks liked.

The Mohawk lived in longhouses. A longhouse

is a wooden building. Longhouses were about 150

feet long, about 36 feet wide, and 20 feet tall. They

have low entrances and some had curved roofs.

Longhouses sheltered 10 to 15 families. A center aisle

ran right through the middle of the longhouses. This

provided a place for 8 to 10 fire pits. Longhouses

usually take around one month to build. Longhouses

are made of wooden poles covered with the bark of

the Elm tree. The fire pits were located in the middle

because everybody gets more heat that way.

There are lots of art and music in the Mohawk tribe. One craft was bead work. Another art craft is the wampum. It is made out of white and purple shell beads. There are so many tips of art crafts and music

One gift from the creator according to the Mohawks, is lacrosse, except it had only a few rules. Their goals were as big as a soccer goals. There was no time limit so it could go on for days and days, and there could be thousands of people on one team. Imagine how hard that would be.

The roles of your tribe are very

important. The boys are responsible for

getting firewood and learning how to shoot

a bow and arrow. He also learned how to

use a snares to catch deer, turkey, and

bears. The woman were responsible for

planting crops, caring for the crops and

they decided where to plant the crops. The

men had to hunt, and make the longhouses.

Men would also defend their village if it

ever got attacked. Men would also clear

fields with war clubs for new longhouses.

Iroquois celebrates traditional dances and songs. In these other ways, Native Americans give thanks for gifts from the creator. The Mohawks respect all living things.

The Mohawk had a very interesting lifestyle. They very deep into their culture of building longhouses. That is why the word Mohawk means “The People Building a Longhouse .”
