Our staff are taking part in Accelerated Learning in
Mathematics (ALIM) and continue our journey with
Manaiakalani with a focus around Learn, Create, Share
with devices. Our roll out of devices happens next
week, which is very exciting for our year 4-8 students.
The chromebooks have exceptional insurance included
with well-tested devices that Manaiakalani have the
power to buy in bulk. For those that missed this first roll
-out, another opportunity will roll-out in the middle of
the year.
SPECIAL CHARACTER
If you are new to PCS you will see our Special Character
throughout our leadership with our students, our
classroom programmes and our celebration days. We
have a busy Religious Education Programme, particularly
in term 1, so watch the calendar for some events that
you can join in with us.
As a school we run Mass twice a term, and it is great to
have as many students as possible taking part in the
Church. Mass begins at 9am every Sunday, and those
that are involved in Ministries of reading, prayer, altar
service and projector, we ask that you arrive at 8.45am.
Father Carlo always has a wonderful homily and we
know that you will enjoy it.
You will also see that our Sacramental Programme
begins this term, so come in and see Mrs Carey, Mr
Gunn or Father Carlo if you wish your child to take part
in this very special sacrament of First Holy Communion
and Confirmation. From there, the students take part as
altar servers in the church which we are always very
proud of.
COMMUNICATION
Communication will come through our newsletters on a
fortnightly basis, our school Facebook page Pompallier
C a t h o l i c S c h o o l a n d o u r w e b s i t e

changing so please keep on eye on these for any
updates.

A very warm welcome back to school! For those that
are new to our school community, we wish you a very
warm welcome to our special community! What a
fabulous sun filled Christmas and summer break it has
been. Our teachers are back, full of enthusiasm to
tackle a wonderful year ahead!
We welcomed our new staff and students on Thursday
with a whakatau—a great way to begin our term in
partnership with the parish.
2019 THEME
To build our theme each year we use a combination of
parent/whanau voice, student voice and teacher
observations. The need for sustainability and care for
God’s creation continues in our world. As global
citizens our students will investigate and problem solve
around these issues. We continue with our “Care for
God’s Creation with a real focus on the following—
R.I.S.E :
Respect
Inspire
Service
Excellence
Our classroom celebrations will revolve around these
aspects. We continue with our school values of Tika,
Pono, Aroha and Atawhai which permeate through all
parts of our daily curriculum and teaching and learning.
CURRICULUM
We continue to have a focus on STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) within our
school curriculum and we are also bringing in the Arts.
Learning will have links to these main areas with literacy
and religious education being woven throughout.
Special points of interest:
• Family Mass Sunday 24th February
• Shrove Tuesday 5th March
• Ash Wednesday 6th March
• Friday 8th March PCS Swimming Sports
Friday 1st February 2019 Week 1 Term 1
UNIFORM
Summer, term 1 uniform with black sandals (year 7/8’s can also have black plain shoes due to technology) tidy hair cuts (no mohawks or patterns cut into hair, no hair dye). Longer hair tied up for the girls/boys. Year 7/8 students in white polo shirts and year 0-6 in green.
Our uniform policy can be found on our school website. Please ensure that your child comes with the correct uniform and a sun hat for one of the hottest terms we have. Thank you for the support to keep our students looking tidy and proud to be at PCS!
We have a range of sandals available and some green polo shirts available for $10. Come and see the office for assistance.
We also have a some “pre-loved” uniforms available. Please call in to the office.
SWIMMING
Swimming will be a part of our health and pe
programme for term 1. It is so important that
your child comes with a swimming cap, swimwear,
goggles (if you have them) and a towel. It is vital
that our children know how to swim so please
support this part of our curriculum. Each class
gets approximately 30 minutes in the Kaitaia
Swimming Pool for 5 weeks, starting on Monday
4th February. We have the pool Monday, Tuesday
and Thursday each week. Please encourage your
child to look after all of their gear and have it
clearly named. If you would like to help the junior
classes with supervision, come and see the
classroom teacher.
We have our school swimming sports set aside,
and are very grateful for time-keeping help if you
are able to give us a session for part of the day
we would be very grateful.
POMPALLIER DISCIPLES/ SPECIAL CHARACTER TEAM/HOUSE GROUP CAPTAINS
Every year 7 and 8 student has the opportunity to apply for these sought after positions of leadership within our school. The process involves completion of a job application and then senior staff sit down and make the very tough decisions!. For many of these students, this is their first application for a job and a great experience for teaching them about future skills! Watch this space for announcements of leaders soon! Our students are always great leaders and are a huge help in our school. They are great role models of our school values and gain lots of experience in leadership to set them off into their next journey at secondary school.
COMMUNICATION
We always aim to keep you well informed. If you need to find out anything urgent you will be sent a text from Helen in the office (if she has your num-ber). We also update our Facebook page—see Pompallier Catholic School and other information is on our website, or our free app on Skool Loop, down-load this for updates. Our staff will be building up their classroom blogs as another form of communi-cation as the year progresses.

It is always wonderful to see our school
grow with such enthusiastic and confident students! We know they will
love being at PCS!
“...but those who hope in the LORD will re-
new their strength. They will rise up on wings like
eagles;” - Isaiah 40.31
In his now famous inauguration speech, the late
Nelson Mandela quoted from a poem by Marianne
Williamson called, “Our deepest Fear”
I’ve included it here for you:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond
measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most
frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be bril-
liant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who
are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your
playing small does not serve the world. There is
nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you. We are all
meant to shine, as children do. We were born to
make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as
we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our pres-
ence automatically liberates others.”
Our theme for this year is RISE, and while we may
not have to face the injustice and division that Nel-
son Mandela had to, we can take these words to
heart as we seek to live this year as Jesus would
have us.
Jesus tells us in John 17:14 that we are not of this
world but in it and so we must rise above and show
others that kindness and love is our first and best
beginning point in responding to all situations and
people we encounter.
That’s simple but not easy.
Perhaps by living lives that radiate love and light,
we might just manifest God’s presence here on
earth as we were made to.
Amen.
God Bless Phil.

WHAKATAU
We began our first day of school on Thursday welcoming our current and new staff and students. A
special thanks to Father Carlo for his karakia, Connie Hassan as our kai karanga, Bill Pomare, Barry
Murray and Phil Gunn who spoke on our behalf. All of our new students were welcomed with open
arms. Our parishioners are such a special part of our school and we are so proud to be a whanau
together. As always Matua Wiremu Smith had our kapa haka roupu performing with skill and
expertise even after a 6 week break! It is so wonderful to have our playground brimming with chatter
again! We are excited to get into the new learning throughout the school.
This is a copy of our complaints procedure. If you have any queries or concerns, please come in and
chat with your child’s teacher. Things can often be easily clarified and sorted out with open lines of
communication. If you find that you are still concerned, please come and make a time to see the
Principal Kathryn Carey.
