Dear Fellow Parishioners of St. Barnabas':

There is an old African proverb that says “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” A child is not only a blessing from God for the family, but also for their entire village. To praise God for the child's life, everyone in the village takes on the responsibility to see that the child grows to be physically and spiritually healthy. That means not only the parents, siblings, grandparents, and their extended families are tasked for the child's growth, but also friends and neighbors.

We can adapt the proverb for our modern day spiritual life, saying that “It takes the whole congregation to raise a church.” The church has a number of important missions—worship, education, pastoral care, and outreach—and it takes the hard work and talents of its members to undertake these missions. Saint Paul says it best in his letter to the Romans (Chapter 12, verses 6-8): “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, then do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Whatever your talent, there is a ministry at St. Barnabas' that is right for you. This directory contains a list of the over 80 ministries that take place in our church, along with a brief description of what each ministry does and what roles volunteers might play. Among the listings can be found suggestions for ministries based on your talents, as described by St. Paul's quote above. The booklet also contains an insert that lists contact information for each ministry, so that you can either call or e-mail your fellow parishioners to learn more about the ministry's role in our church. Some ministries may be inactive or are in need of an organizer to get it back on its feet. If the Holy Spirit so moves you to jump start such a ministry, please contact Reverend Hawkins, and she will put you in touch with other parishioners who may be able to help.

By the giving of our time and talents, we have kept St. Barnabas' spiritually thriving for 50 years doing God's work. As Paul says in his first letter to the Corinthians (Chapter 12, verses 4-6): "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." May this directory guide you to finding the ministries that interest you so that we may keep St. Barnabas' thriving for another 50 years.

Yours in Christ,

The Stewardship Committee

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Alphabetical Listing of Ministries

A ACCA The Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) is a group of 26 churches in the Annandale and Baileys Crossroads area working together to help those in need in our community. ACCA provides emergency financial assistance and food, distributes donated furniture, gives rides to medical appointments, and provides scholarships to students with special challenges. ACCA also supports other local activities, including Meals on Wheels, the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter, Shelter House family shelter, and Rebuilding Together. In addition to the volunteer opportunities listed below, volunteers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound seniors through Meals-on-Wheels and serve as family emergency or food "captains" to receive referrals for assistance needs. ACCA supporters also provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for families in the Annandale area.

ACCA Child Development Center ACCA operates a child development center for nearly 200 children. Most children are from low and moderate-income families. Volunteers are needed at the Child Development Center to rock the infants, read to preschoolers, and assist with other activities.

ACCA Driving to Medical Appointments ACCA provides rides for elderly residents of our community so that they can get to their medical appointments. St. Barnabas' parishioners help by serving as drivers.

ACCA Food Pantry and Delivery The ACCA food pantry provides food to needy families in the Annandale area. St. Barnabas' has baskets in the narthex for food pantry donations. There is always a need for rice, dried beans, cereal, dried milk, canned meats, diapers, and paper products. Volunteers at the food pantry help stock the food that has been donated to the pantry, as well as put together bags and baskets of food for delivery.

ACCA Furniture Delivery Volunteers collect, warehouse, and deliver donated furniture, to needy families in the area. Volunteers are needed to pick up and deliver furniture, communicate with volunteers by phone (in Spanish, English, and other languages), help with administrative tasks in the warehouse, and key in computer information (which volunteers can do from home using a program like Microsoft Word).

Acolytes Each week acolytes assist at worship services. This service includes lighting and extinguishing candles, leading the processional, receiving the offering, assisting in the preparation of the Eucharist, and ensuring that each service runs smoothly. Being an acolyte is a meaningful and viable way for the younger parishioners of St. Barnabas’ to serve the church. Anyone in the fourth grade or older is welcome.

Adult Choir The Adult Choir is open to interested persons from high school through senior adults and provides music at all primary worship services and other services, such as Choral Evensong, as requested. The choir works on vocal technique, music reading and general musicianship while preparing anthems to offer for worship. The ability to read music is not a prerequisite for participating in the choir. The Adult Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7:30 p.m. (sharp) to 9:00 p.m. and at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays. The Choir sings a wide range of repertoire up to and including 20th century music. The only prerequisites for participating in the Adult Choir are the desire to praise God through song and to be able to make to commitment of weekly rehearsals and services.

Adult Forum The Adult Forum meets most Sundays of the year at 9:15 a.m. to present topics for the Christian education and formation of the people. The Forum series seeks to engage people in the life of the church by presentations on ministry activities, Bible studies, worship, and other topics pertaining to our life together. Our presentations allow for sharing, questions, and sometimes friendly disagreement. Grab a cup of excellent Bishop’s Blend coffee, and join us for Sunday morning fellowship and formation.

Altar Flower Delivery Each week, teams of parishioners deliver the Sunday altar flowers to hospitalized or homebound members of our congregation. Each person to whom flowers are delivered also receives a Sunday bulletin and a printed card including the deliverer's name and the following message: "These flowers have been on the altar at St. Barnabas’ today. They come to you with their silent message of hope and the blessings of God's love, and bring our best wishes." The team also includes a note card with the flowers that parishioners have signed at the Coffee Hour that includes any personal wishes the writer may wish to send to the recipient of the flowers. Delivery team members are encouraged to spend some time with those receiving the altar flowers. Ten teams of couples and singles presently participate in this rewarding ministry, and more are invited.

Altar Guild Before each service, members of the Altar Guild prepare the church chancel with linens, wine, water, and wafers. Afterwards they clear away, wash up, and leave the church in readiness for the next service. Altar Guild members work in teams of three for a week at a time; the schedule rotates so that each person is on duty once every four to six weeks. The Guild welcomes new members at any time of the year and will provide individualized training.

Annandale Food Site The Annandale Food Site operates every Thursday night out of the Immanuel United Methodist Church. It provides food for walk-in clients needing food assistance in the Annandale area. St. Barnabas' collects donations for the food site each Sunday, and parishioners are always needed to help run the program every Thursday night.

Annandale Safe Youth Project (ASYP) This after-school program is housed at St. Barnabas', in partnership with Fairfax County, Braddock Elementary School, and Alternative House. It usually has 18 - 25 kids on any given day. It provides the children with a safe environment after school, offering homework help, snacks, and tender loving care. It gives them a chance to become part of a stable group, grow and develop their personalities, and have caring adult mentors. Alternative House provides a professional program coordinator and assistant, and provides the transportation form Braddock Elementary School. St. Barnabas' provides most of the volunteers and other support. New volunteers are always needed!

Audit Committee The Audit Committee is appointed by the Vestry to perform an annual inspection of the parish financial records, following procedures prescribed by the Diocese of Virginia in their “Audit Program Checklist”. These procedures are intended to verify that the financial position of the parish is fairly stated in the financial statements prepared by the Treasurer. The Audit Committee is also asked to review financial practices and internal controls and to furnish a report of the total financial condition of the parish and any recommendations regarding such to the Vestry and the Diocese.

If your gift is prophesying...

"Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,

especially the gift of prophecy. For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to

God..." - 1 Corinthians 14:1-2 If you can see and feel the Holy Spirit at work around you and wish to help the church and its congregation grow spiritually, then please share your gifts with such ministries as Bible Study, Education for Ministry, Small Groups, and the Stewardship Committee.

Barnabees' Craft Group The Barnabees is a group of women (and men too!) who gather on Thursdays to do craft work and enjoy fellowship time together. The crafts are sold at the fall bazaar and financially support numerous outreach programs and purchase something needed at the church.

Bethany House Bethany House of Northern Virginia provides housing within its four shelters, comprehensive support services including crisis intervention, food, clothing, transportation, and financial assistance for spouses and children who have been victimized by domestic violence and abuse. Its thrift shop, Joseph’s Coat, is a source of clothing and furniture when clients move into new housing. Volunteer support is an integral part of BHNV. Help is needed to answer telephones and assist at Joseph’s Coat. Other assignments are made based on the skills of the volunteer.

Bible Study Held after the Wednesday Eucharist, this is an informal group that enjoys reading and discussing scripture, usually focusing on a particular book or section of the Bible.

Bulk Mail Preparation Every month a small group of volunteers assist the Parish Secretary with bulk mail preparation of The Reporter. This involves collating, folding, and attaching preprinted labels. The labels are in zip code order. The mail is then bundled by zip code and placed in a Post Office tray.

C Catering Group The catering group does small receptions, dinners, luncheons, brunches, or any other occasion that involves food. This is a fundraiser for the church, but you can't beat the prices. We need helpers as well as customers.

Chalicists Parishioners assist the clergy in the administration of the Eucharist each Sunday at both services.

Children’s Chapel During the first half of the 10:15 Sunday Service, young children may attend Children's Chapel. There they hear the Bible story of the day and share their responses. They then respond by working on a craft project. The children return to join their parents in church in order to be with them during Communion. Experiencing Holy Communion is the most important Christian Education activity any of us can do!

Children’s Choir The Children’s Choir(s) is open to children ages 5-14, and is divided as follows:

Page 9: The Ministries of St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church€¦ · By the giving of our time and talents, we have kept St. Barnabas' spiritually thriving for 50 years doing God's work. As

• The Primary Choir (Ages 5-9) - This choir rehearses with the full choir on Sunday mornings immediately following the service. The choir is designed to teach good singing techniques, to musically challenge and engage the children in our worship and to learn about the basic customs and liturgies of the Episcopal Church. This choir is a training choir for the St. Cecelia Choir. The choir is open to any child who wishes to praise God in song and is able to make the commitment of weekly rehearsals and Sunday participation.

• The St. Cecelia Choir (Ages 9-14) – This choir rehearses on Sunday mornings immediately following the service. This choir concentrates on doing more challenging music, singing in two or three vocal parts, and participates with the Adult Choir in offering the Office of Choral Evensong during the year. Its primary purpose is to musically challenge and engage the children in our worship with a more advanced curriculum. The choir is open to any child who wishes to praise God in song and is able to make the commitment of weekly rehearsals and Sunday participation.

Children's Christian Formation A children's Christian formation volunteer can be anyone with a strong Christian faith who enjoys working and learning with children. Training is provided, and support is available throughout the year. Several teachers may work with one grade level, alternating teaching so that each leader becomes well acquainted with the students and still has some free Sundays.

The goal of the Godly Play curriculum is to “teach children the art of using the language of the Christian tradition to encounter God and find direction for their lives.” The program focuses on the children knowing God through taking part in the stories of the Old and New Testaments and the traditions of the church. Storytellers prepare the lessons based on the Godly Play curriculum. They tell the stories, lead the children in discussions and their responses to the story, and direct on-going projects. The greeters help the children prepare themselves for the worship format of the class, prepare the feast, and help with clean-up and dismissal.

Both storytellers and greeters are rewarded as the relationships with the young people of the parish develop and deepen. If you would like to work with the Sunday school but are not able to assume the duties of teaching, there are other ways to serve, including helping with special events, leading music, creating materials for the Godly Play stories, or purchasing supplies.

The Church Periodical Club – Miles of Pennies Program St. Barnabas’ members support this program by contributing pennies to provide free literature, both religious and secular, to people affiliated with the Anglican Communion who need and request them and who have no other source for obtaining them. The Miles of Pennies fund of the Church Periodical club is a national project that also supplies the book needs of children worldwide. Individual grants for audio-visual materials may not exceed one Mile of Pennies - $844.80. Containers for your pennies are usually in the narthex and in the Richardson Room.

Church Women United This is an international ecumenical group of Christian women. The Annandale area is part of the Fairfax, Lincolnia and Springfield region that sponsors three “Celebrations” annually: World Day of Prayer in March, May Fellowship Day, and World Community Day in November. Each Celebration is held the first Friday of that month in various churches.

Coffee Hour Hosts After each Sunday Service volunteers host a hospitality hour. Rotating hosts serve coffee, tea and lemonade (church provides) and breakfast snacks (hosts provide) to be enjoyed during this fellowship time. Separate lists are maintained for the 8:00 am and 10:15 am services.

CROP Walk ACCA organizes the Annandale CROP Hunger Walk, a community-wide event which raises funds for Church World Service's hunger and refugee relief programs and ACCA. Funds from the walk help to sponsor both the Church World Service funded programs and the ACCA Food Pantry. St. Barnabas' parishioners walk and volunteer to man the registration and refreshments at the walk. Parishioners also make donations to Church World Service by sponsoring walkers.

If your gift is serving...

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom

for many.” - Mark 10:45

If you wish to help out the church, but prefer to work behind the scenes instead of taking a leadership role, then please share your service with such ministries as the Altar Guild; Acolytes; Give a Ride, Take a Ride, Parish Administrator Substitutes; and Parish Meals.

D Dialogue on Race Journey Group After a Workshop led by the Diocese of Virginia Committee on Race and Reconciliation, a group formed at St. Barnabas’ called the Dialogue on Race Journey Group. The Journey Group seeks to recognize and incorporate the diverse and enriching gifts of all cultures by examining our attitudes toward race and by encouraging cultural diversity. As part of this mission, the Journey Group will prepare a Service of Repentance and a Service of Reconciliation.

E Education for Ministry (EFM) Education for Ministry is a small group educational opportunity for adults developed at the Episcopal Seminary at the University of the South. It includes a study of Old Testament, New Testament, Church history, and theology. It is based on a model of reflection that brings theological knowledge into dialogue with a Christian's daily life of ministry. The cost to participate is approximately $340 per year. Participants make a yearly commitment for weekly gatherings during the four years of the course.

18+ Group This group consists of the college-aged and twenty-something members of our church. It hosts a variety of events, including service projects and social outings. New members are always welcome.

F Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services (FACETS) The FACETS hot meals program, in cooperation with 20 other Fairfax County churches, gives the parish a chance to engage in direct, hands-on outreach to those challenged by homelessness. On the first Sunday of each month, St. Barnabas’ members gather to prepare and assemble complete hot meals for homeless families identified by Fairfax County. The food prepared has been donated by parish members or supported by financial contributions; St. Barnabas’ members deliver the meals directly to the families in motels designated as temporary housing. Over 30 parish members shop, cook and deliver for this program: “we love our work”.

Facilities Committee The Facilities Committee is charged with maintaining the church facilities so that the church can fulfill its spiritual and outreach work. The group works with the Junior Warden to discuss the repairs and restorations needed throughout the church.

Finance Committee The Finance Committee serves as a resource for the Vestry, assisting in the development of the annual financial budget for St. Barnabas' so that the church may meet its financial as well as

spiritual obligations. The Committee also performs research on financial issues and recommends funding strategies for major expenditures. The Committee meets monthly, but its most intensive work is done in the late fall and early winter as it prepares the draft budget for the following year. Interested volunteers are always welcomed.

Friendship Guild (Food for the Sick) The Guild’s goal is to provide support through food and prayers for those who have experienced a life-changing event such as childbirth, surgery, death in the family, etc. Those who are alone or living with chronic health problems are also served. The Guild is limited by the number of people-hours currently available. Personal calling is another service that is needed. It would allow for keeping in touch with parishioners to determine continuing and emerging needs.

Funeral Receptions The St. Barnabas’ community provides welcome, succor and support for family and friends after funeral services. Volunteers are needed to help prepare food.

G Gardens and Grounds Many helping hands are needed to keep our landscape in order. Ideally some one or a family would maintain one area. Most weekly grass cutting is done by a lawn service. Church members cut the rest of the property with a tractor in the shed.

Give a Ride, Take a Ride From time to time, parishioners who cannot drive because of health problems need transportation to church. Because of this need, the "Give a Ride, Take a Ride" program was created. A coordinator is needed to connect with drivers with those who need the rides.

Greeter for Sunday Services Greeters are friendly people who stand in the narthex or outside 10 minutes before and 15 minutes after services to welcome current members, visitors and new-comers. Greeters take new worshipers to the Nursery or Children’s Chapel if necessary. Each greeter team is made up of a family or two friends and is scheduled about every six weeks.

I International Outreach Ministries The International Outreach Ministries group helps plan activities, trips, and fundraising in support of the church's foreign missions, including missions in Cuba and Honduras.

J Journey to Adulthood (J2A) J2A is a six-year Christian education program for youth that allows them to learn and grow together through three stages:

• Rite 13 is a two-year program that begins with 11- and 12-year-olds such that each child will turn 13 during the program. The focus of the program is on the images of God, how we are made in the image of God, and how we celebrate our gifts of being made man and woman. As each child turns 13 years old, they participate in a Rite 13 Sunday service that acknowledges their transition to adulthood.

• Journey to Adulthood or “J2A” is a two-year program that follows Rite 13 where the same young people continue their spiritual journey with new leaders. The focus is taking on personal and spiritual responsibilities. During these two years, they will plan and go on a spiritual pilgrimage to another part of this country or the world.

• Youth at Church or “YAC” is the final two-year program that sees the youth through their 18th birthdays and graduation from high school. This stage focuses on the commitment and involvement in the congregation. These youth discern and implement a mission within the congregation and become partners in the leadership of the Church.

If your gift is to encourage...

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in

fact you are doing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:11

If you have the ability to be there for others, to lend a friendly ear, and to say the right words to a fellow parishioner in need, then please share your encouragement with such ministries as the Catering Group, Coffee Hour Hosts, CROP Walk, FACETS, and Greeters for Sunday Services.

L Labyrinth Maintenance The Labyrinth Maintenance group maintains the outdoor labyrinth at the far rear of the church property. An ancient pattern based on spirals from nature and found in many cultures of the world, the labyrinth is used as a form of meditation and a tool for spiritual renewal. Anyone is welcome to help out keeping our labyrinth looking its best.

Lawn Mowing Team The Lawn Mowing Team is a group of St. Barnabas' volunteers who ensure that the lawns that make up the church grounds are mowed weekly during the spring, summer, and autumn seasons.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) Early Christian writers tell about what seems to have been a regular practice: The laity took the sacrament home from the Sunday service. During the following week they would… “administer communion to the sick, shut-in and the dying.” Not every member of the St. Barnabas’ family is able to attend worship services on a regular basis, often due to physical infirmity. Parishioners must be trained and licensed to serve as LEMs, who take the consecrated elements to members of the congregation who were unable to be present at the Holy Eucharist on Sunday or other regularly scheduled celebration. Others who are interested in this ministry are welcome.

Lectors Parishioners read the lessons and lead the Prayers of the People during worship services.

Legacy Endowment Board The Legacy Endowment Board manages the funds associated with the St. Barnabas' Legacy Fund and recommends to the Vestry how to distribute its funds.

Legacy Giving Committee The Legacy Giving Committee educates the congregation about the St. Barnabas' Legacy Fund and informs the parishioners of its grants and events.

Library St. Barnabas’ library contains a number of books helpful in the study of the Bible, including The Interpreter’s Bible, Harper’s Bible Dictionary, atlases, concordances, NT commentaries, Gospel Parallels, and various translations of the Old and New Testaments. The collection also contains books on Church History and the early Church, Christian Spirituality, Prayer, and various other categories.

M Maintenance and Repair St. Barnabas’ buildings and grounds are maintained by volunteers, with some contracted services. Volunteers provide upkeep and yard work on designated church work days, and on an as-needed basis for plumbing, electrical and other repairs.

Maundy Thursday Lenten Vigil The Lenten Vigil is held on Maundy Thursday, immediately following the 8:00 p.m. service and ends at noon on Good Friday. Parishioners “keep vigil” with Jesus, as he requested of Peter and John, by signing-up for one-hour blocks of time to meditate at St. Barnabas’. Volunteers for this ministry set up the prayer schedule and provide coffee and mediation readings.

Men’s Group Breakfast Meetings The men of the parish have a very informal monthly breakfast meeting. The group was started in 1990, and its purpose is to promote the men’s spiritual growth and to encourage each other to help others.

N Newcomers’ Committee The Newcomers Committee recruits new members to join St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, welcomes all members and visitors, and integrates new and existing members into the St. Barnabas' community. The Committee's efforts include developing marketing materials, and engaging in outreach efforts through social events, personal welcome greetings to new members, and social media.

If your gift is teaching...

"In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your

teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot

be condemned..." - Titus 2:7-8

If you are comfortable communicating your personal understanding of faith to others eager and willing to learn, then please share your teaching skills with such ministries as Adult Forum, Children's Christian Formation (Sunday School), Journey to Adulthood, Journey Group, and Vacation Bible School.

O Openers The Openers provide an important service to St. Barnabas' by opening up the church every Sunday morning an hour before the 8:00 AM service. Openers basically unlock the doors, turn on the lights, open up the kitchen, turn on the church sound system, and check that the chancel is prepared for service. New volunteers are always welcome.

Outreach Commission The Outreach Committee recommends to the Vestry disbursement of allocated outreach fund for various good works and activities. The committee solicits proposals, reviews existing commitments and studies new requests with the objective of assuring maximum impact for our funds. A minimum of 50% of funds remains within the community; approximately 25% supports regional ministries; and the remaining 25% supports international ministries. Members of the committee serve three-year rotating terms.

P Parish Administrator Substitutes Volunteers are needed for the parish office when the administrator is sick or on vacation (Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). Duties include assisting visitors, answering the phone, and the basics to cover the office. If you would like to help, please contact the parish office, 703-941-2922 or [email protected].

Parish Meals Cooks, dishwashers, and set-up crews are needed for the various meals or receptions at the parish – work day picnics, St. Barnabas’ day lunches, bishop’s visits, congregational meetings, Lenten suppers, etc. The WOSB usually take the lead in serving meals, and the contact person for the various meals is usually announced several weeks prior to an event.

Parish Musicians This is a group of parishioners who, at the request of the Minister of Music, participate in the Music Ministries by offering their gifts of instrumental music during services.

Prayer Chain The Prayer chain is a group of dedicated people who can be called into service for emergency daily prayers.

Professional Assistance From time to time the parish needs the service of professionals in various fields: legal, accounting, insurance, design, building, computers, engineering, etc. Parishioners in those fields willing to advise or serve as a liaison would be helpful to the office or the Vestry.

R Rebuilding Together Teams of volunteers repair houses for elderly homeowners or others who need help with maintenance on the last Saturday in April. People are needed with all skill levels to repair, paint, and garden. ACCA sponsors houses under Fairfax-Falls Church Rebuilding in April.

Recital Series The Music Ministries sponsors at least two special music events during the year which feature talented Christian musicians who offer their music to the glory of God.

Rite 13 See Journey to Adulthood

S Salvation Army Christmas Stockings Each year stockings are distributed to parishioners to fill for needy children within the Fairfax County area. Members are encouraged to share the shopping experience with their children, grandchildren, or friends as a means of teaching children the needs of less fortunate children within our local community. This project is sponsored by Church Women United, an ecumenical group, actively supported by St. Barnabas'.

If your gift is giving...

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,

not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a

cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:7

If you are able to dedicate your time, talents, and resources to help grow and strengthen the church and its congregation, then please share your gifts with such ministries as the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA), Facilities Committee, International Outreach Missions, Legacy Giving Committee, and Newcomers Committee.

Shrine Mont Parish Weekend Committee Every September about fifty parishioners of all ages head to Shrine Mont, the Diocesan Camp/Conference center in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west (about 2 1/2 hours from the Beltway) for a weekend of worship, fellowship, discussion, singing, reflection and fun. It is a great outing! Parishioners are needed for planning the theme, leading worship, reading lessons, playing musical instruments, providing entertainment, etc.

Ski Trip Traditionally on Presidents’ Day weekend, the parish youth, families and friends leave on Friday afternoon for Canaan Valley Resorts in West Virginia for day and evening skiing (for all levels) until Monday afternoon. Other activities include snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ice skating, indoor swimming and use of the hot tub and sauna. An additional highlight is the Compline Service on Saturday night.

Sleepy Hollow Services and Music St. Barnabas’ joins St. Alban's to provide worship services to the residents of Sleepy Hollow Nursing Home. Services are conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday in the Crystal Room. Lay volunteers lead Morning Prayer, or play the piano or small organ for musical accompaniment. A priest from St. Alban's celebrates the Eucharist one Sunday a month, and the lay volunteer assists. Services are also conducted in conjunction with feast days.

Small Groups The vestry identified forming small groups at St. Barnabas' as a way we wanted to explore in order to bring new depth to the spirituality and community of our church. Some people who are interested have agreed to form a group called "Beginnings." This group will have regular meetings and expand as more people wish to participate.

St. Barnabas’ Players The St. Barnabas' Players welcomes all church members who are interested in acting and staging dramatic performances at the church. We have performed dramatic readings and comic and dramatic skits during Sunday services for the past four years. If you have an interest in stagecraft and theatre, please come join us!

St. Barnabas’ Reporter The St. Barnabas’ Reporter, published monthly, provides spiritual guidance and contains information about upcoming or recently completed events and activities at the church. Members of the congregation are encouraged to e-mail articles or to drop them off at the church office. In addition to articles, volunteers are needed on a monthly basis to assist with photocopying and assembly of the Reporter.

Stewardship Committee The purpose of the Stewardship Committee is to provide education for the people of St. Barnabas’ about stewardship as a spiritual discipline. The decision to trust in God’s abundance and to give joyfully often results in the transformation of lives. The Committee runs the annual giving campaigns and educates and informs the congregation of the many ministries of the church. Stewardship, though, is not just about the time, talent and money that we offer to God, but is “using all that God has entrusted to us to do the work God is calling us to do.”

Stop Hunger Now Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. The organization is driven by a vision of a world without hunger and a mission to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world's most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources. Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world. St. Barnabas' held its first Stop Hunger Now event in 2012 and looks forward to holding future events.

Sunday Offering Counters The counters, in teams of at least two, count the money (checks and cash) that is received each Sunday in the offering, or is received by the church during the week. It involves recording the gifts on a form, ensuring each gift is properly accounted for in terms of who it is from, and what purpose it is designated for. Entering that information on the forms into the automated accounting system is done by the church staff, not by the counters.

Supper Clubs This is an adult social activity designed to foster fellowship in smaller group settings. Interested parishioners sign-up each fall and are then divided into dinner groups. Members take turns hosting the dinners in their homes at a time that is convenient with the group.

T TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) All adult members of the St. Barnabas’ family are invited to attend monthly TGIF parties. These are purely social occasions, usually involving a meal, which enable us to better know one another. Events may take place at homes or in the parish hall. Sign up on the bulletin board to attend. Hosts for TGIF functions are also solicited. Watch for announcements either to join in or help out.

Thirtweens In the transition between the Godly Play and Journey to Adulthood (J2A) programs, some Sunday School children find themselves having graduated from Godly Play but not yet old enough for Rite 13. For these children, a special one-year class is convened that transitions them to the style of lessons taught in J2A. Teachers for this class will have an available curriculum for them to teach, but are encourage to develop their own lessons as well.

Tweeners Group The Tweeners group provides an opportunity to all single adults and young families to serve the St. Barnabas' family together in ways we can't accomplish alone. The cornerstones for this group are prayer, play and work within the context of our shared commitment in faith. Activities are usually on Sunday afternoon/evenings and include meals, discussions, musical performances and visits to other churches.

U Ushers Ushers welcome parishioners and visitors to the church, help them find seats, accept the offering and guide people during the Eucharist.

United Thank Offering (UTO) Through prayers and thankful offerings, Episcopalians have been meeting the needs of people around the world through United Thank Offering since 1889. UTO is entrusted to promote thank offerings and receive/distribute monies to support mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church in the world. As a result, there are schools in Africa, churches in Central America, clinics in Papua, New Guinea and after-school programs in the United States. The list goes on and on because Episcopalians are thankful givers! This ministry is generously supported by the Women of St. Barnabas who recognize their many daily blessings and translate those blessings into tangible giving. When we all give thanks to God and feed our "blue boxes"...wonderful things happen.

If your gift is to lead...

"Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God..." - Acts 20:28

If you can step forward, organize, take charge, and motivate others to promote our Christian mission both inside and outside the church, then please share your leadership skills with such ministries as the Finance Committee, Legacy Endowment Board, Maintenance and Repair, Vestry, and Women of St. Barnabas'.

V Vacation Bible School Coordinator Vacation Bible School Coordinator first reviews the different Bible School packages available, chooses one and obtains the start-up material. A date is chosen and registration begins - hopefully before everyone fills their summers. Most important - VOLUNTEERS are recruited and “blessed” with the rare opportunity to spend a few hours a night for a week with our wonderful kids! A planning meeting, a day of decorating the church, and some time spent ordering supplies complete the duties of Vacation Bible School Coordinator.

Vestry St. Barnabas’ parish elects members for its 12-person vestry at the congregational meeting held each November. Either four or five people are elected each year for a three-year term. The vestry members are responsible for supervising the finances of the parish, maintaining the physical plant, and providing lay leadership to the congregation. Prior to the annual meeting a Vestry committee will seek nominations.

W Women of St. Barnabas’ (WOSB) All women who attend St. Barnabas’ are considered members of this group. Regular administrative meetings are on the first Tuesday mornings of the month, but nighttime and weekend meetings and events are also scheduled to encourage participation by and fellowship with women who cannot attend weekday meetings and events. The WOSB sponsors many functions at church, including organizing women’s retreats, educational talks on issues such as mission, world events and contemporary life; and workshops on spiritual growth. The WOSB host several annual events: a Christmas Bazaar; a fall pumpkin sale, a welcome tea or brunch, bake sales, craft sales and a flea market. The WOSB organize receptions and meals for special occasions and funerals, the Christmas chili supper, the Lenten suppers and an Easter breakfast for choir and staff. Over 90% of the money earned by WOSB fund-raising activities is distributed to numerous outreach programs and also supports local community needs as well as the activities of St. Barnabas’.

Youth Committee This committee coordinates the multiple facets of the Sunday school and youth programs. The committee secures adequate staff, orders curriculum materials, assists teachers on Sunday mornings, schedules and leads teacher meetings, and maintains communication within the staff and with the Vestry and the general congregation. Members also coordinate activities for the older youth, including the Journey to Adulthood (J2A) Program and various youth ministries, such as the World Vision 30 Hour Famine and Towel Ministry.

If your gift is to show mercy...
