Since 1956, South Sudan has been in turmoil. War and famine has become part of life.

The longest civil war in the history of Sudan before South Sudan got its independence lasted 22 years—from June 5, 1983 to June 9, 2005. This war has affected every South Sudanese alive today, with particular impact on women and children. Those escaping the war are now at risk of dying from lack of clean water, malnutrition, and disease. The United Nations reports that 2.4 million Sudanese are internally displaced, and another 2 million are now refugees in neighboring countries.

How St. Andrew is helping:

St. Andrew has contributed $1,000 in mission funds toward the shipment in June of relief supplies to refugee camps, in cooperation with the Lutheran Church of South Sudan (LCSS). The shipment will include medical supplies, clothing, and materials for daily living. In partnership with the LCSS, St. Andrew is asking for donations to help LCSS with this project.

Please donate through the designated collection bin in the church Atrium:

Gently worn clothes for children and adults Shoes for children and adults (your gift may be a child’s first pair) Children’s books

These supplies will be delivered by LCSS to the children and women of South Sudanese now living in one of the three refugee camps in Ethiopia.

Please Join Us and Get to Know Others

We are starting another cycle of Friendship Dinners that will be scheduled during the spring and summer months. These are dinners that are held in members’ homes and can be casual or sit-down affairs. The hosts determine the number of guests that can be accommodated and the type of meal or menu. Generally, the host provides an entrée and beverages while guests provide the side dishes. Scheduled dinners will be announced in the Messenger and during announcements on Sunday mornings. Sign-up sheets for scheduled dinners will be located on the side counter in the atrium. We hope that you will join us for one or more of these dinners and get better acquainted with others that attend St. Andrew. If you would enjoy hosting one of these events, contact Connie Steele at [email protected]. Please watch for the first dinner to be announced in the April Messenger.

Vacation Bible School

Join us for super-size learning and fun at Vacation Bible School, June 11-15, from 8:30 am to noon. VBS is for 4-year-olds through current 5th graders. Older students and adults can join us as volunteer leaders. Registration forms for kids and leaders are in the Atrium. This year, we are offering early morning care, from 7:30 to 8:30 am, for children who need to arrive before VBS starts. Also, nursery care is available for infants and toddlers of VBS volunteers. Save the date and plan to attend!

VBS Focus Group All students in 4th and 5th grade are invited to participate in a lunch meeting to talk about plans for VBS. The meeting is 12:30 to 2:00 pm Saturday, March 31, at the church. We’ll have some pizza and share thoughts about a long list of possible activities for VBS. Student feedback from this meeting will help determine our VBS agenda. The lunch is free, but let Heather know if you will attend. Email [email protected] or call the church office, 319/338.7523.
